I have the old version of the 22-44 oscillating drum sander for 12-plus years. It works great, but I like the upgrades they made on the new model! The oscillating drum makes a huge difference!

I just sold my Super Max 19/38 sander which I had for a few years. Wasn’t overly happy with it or their service. I’m thinking about the 16” version of this Jet. I’m glad it’s from Taiwan and not China. I’ve discovered their quality is much better. The super max was also difficult to clip end of paper in. Particularly if you have old warn out hands 👎. I agree with you said except the in and out feed tables. I think they are absolutely necessary and can even prevent damage to longer pieces of wood. If you’re on the fence about buying the tables don’t think twice about it because within a day of operating it you’ll wish you already had them.

Thank you for a great video! It was informative, well edited, and a joy to watch while I've been researching drum sanders. I think I'm convinced this oscillating model with the sandsmart control is a better unit than the popular SuperMax 19-38 and worth the extra $1000.

Great video. I have the Powermatic Drum Sander PM2244. I think Jet & Powermatic are the same companies. I things the oscillating feature is a great upgrade.

Wow, you sold me! I just ordered one of these machines yesterday after I had just about decided not to upgrade from my older 16/32. I didn't realize this oscillating model was such an improvement. Funny thing about the extension tables though. I bought them for my 16/32 but I've never bothered to install them because I've never felt the need. Perhaps i will now though. I am REALLY hoping that the oscillating action will reduce the clogging and burning. Thanks SO MUCH for such a great, thoughtful, and thorough review!!

@@CustomWoodWorkDecor Sadly the Amazon seller was a crook and I got my money back after 6 weeks when it was supposedly in stock. Then I ordered it from my local Woodcraft (I would have ordered it there originally but Amazon claimed it was actually in stock) with a 3-4 month lead time. Then after a month, my Woodcraft store announced they were going out of business and the sander would not arrive until long after they were gone, so I was refunded a second time. I decided it wasn't meant to be. I'll try to find an alternative to JET someday. Probably a used small widebelt sander. I wish Grizzly offered an oscillating model. Their service, support and parts availability are a lot better.

If you hunt around online and on Jet's website you can find a number and eventually get through to the right person who can tell you when their next shipment is supposed to come in and how many of that shipment are already spoken for. You can also sign up on home depot's website to be notified when it's in stock. But it will definitely not be on sale. Good luck and please let me know what you decide and what you think of it if you get one!

Purchased this about 2 weeks ago. I am still in the fence about it. I’ve used it only on construction grade lumber (about 300 pieces, 3/4”) so they’re already smooth. Dislikes - It says you can put 22” wood but not that’s not true. It’s about 18”. I snapped 2 sandpaper wraps by trying to use the sides of the roller as well. Leaves a lot of swiggly lines. Putting more than one board at a time really extends the sanding time. Better off doing one at a time. Takes about 3 passes on each side and many times it’s still not stain ready. I end up having to use my orbital anyway. Maybe it’s user error, not sure. But I don’t see it improving my sanding time. I may be returning it. Likes - I get about 8 seconds to play with my phone while the wood is going through the machine -_-

Hi! Thanks for your video. I just purchased an older version of this drum sander second hand. I'm working on getting it set up in my shop. I have the version with the enclosed stand similar to yours. The only issue I'm having is that the wheels won't lock. I move the foot lever into the locking position, but that doesn't do anything. Do you have any insight on what i might be able to adjust based on yours?

I’m trying to figure out if I really need a drum sander so this helps although I will be looking for a smaller unit. I want to try making an end grain cutting board but I do not have a lot of free space in my shop for a specialty tool.

this was my first look at a drum sander and it was a great introduction. First obvious question is can you have multiple drums that you drop in so you're not constantly wrapping them with different grits?

The short answer is no. It would take some significant deconstruction to get the drum out. It's not that bad to wrap paper on the drum after you do it a few times. But I get your point.

I have the Jet 16-32 machine, and have had exactly the same struggles with the clip on the motor side.... makes me really not want to change grits and thus limits use of the machine. I was sorry to hear you mention that that problem is still not resolved. I've been looking for alternative machines, but have only found the Woodmaster as a possible choice...Given the $3,000 price of the Jet oscillating machine, I wonder if you also considered the Woodmaster 26 inch drum sander... which does not use the cantilever design, and does not have the pesky clip issue. Can this machine be fitted with a nylon abrasive brush for denibbing/scuff sanding between coats? I have a wide belt sander for raw wood sanding but I'm looking to add a drum sander with brush to speed up the sealer/primer sanding process. I know the Laguna 19-38 can be outfitted with a brush, but I'd consider getting this Jet machine if a similar brush is available.

Nice review, I have the original version of this machine and found that getting the drum parallel to the bed is very touchy. Did they upgrade the way you can adjust parallelism or is it the same clunky method?

Thanks for the video. I just ordered my machine after doing a 3D cutting board class at Woodcraft. The instructor told us the oscillating feature works best if used on the machine's last passes. I considered getting a wider capacity but went for the one with the oscillating feature. Any tips on using the machine would be appreciated. what setting or speed you get good results.

Thanks for the video. Does the manual state the 1/8" spacing requirement when you wrap the drum? Also, would you ever consider wrapping the drum for velcro backed paper? I know others who have and swear by it. They've all stated the small amount of give/padding of the velcro backer makes all the difference.

Great questions. The manual states "flush or with a slight gap (about 1/8") between...windings" It came with 1/8" gap on the factory installed paper. I have not heard about using velcro. I'd be interested in learning more if you have any resources. On the surface it sounds like an interesting idea. Couple of thoughts-is there a source for strips with velcro or do I have to add it?? Perhaps a bit of a convenience pain. Precut is so no brainer. And how would the velcro work on thin material?? Would it give you less uniform cuts. Hi Peter. I'm not sure I understand the question. There are belt adjusters to tighten and track the belt. There is also means (via drum carriage bolts) to adjust the parallelism of the drum to the conveyor bed, which is a bit more complicated. Thanks for this video. I have a Jet 16/32 non-oscillating drum sander, and the one thing that drives me crazy is that no matter how much I fuss with the hand clip. I cannot get the paper to be nice and taught. This causes the paper to be loose enough that it will often get overlapped on itself during sanding, which creates gouges in my workpieces and burning and all manner of chaos. And then I have to remove it and throw it away. I can only imagine that on an oscillating drum this problem would be 10 times worse. I've tried to find videos on this to no avail -- so what is the secret to getting that clip to hold the paper tightly???? Please help!! Thanks and all the best

Hey Carl. You are experiencing exactly what I pointed out in the video. I know how frustrating it can be. Jet (performax) has changed the clip design several times over the years. I'm not sure exactly which system you have, which might make the problem easier/harder. I can offer a few tips. First sometimes the paper taper is wider than the clip so it bottoms out before it's tight. Try trimming the paper (scissors) end so it's a bit thinner. Get your hands on one of the jet tools that I mention in the video (or build your own). It helps get a bit more leverage over the clip spring. Try rolling the paper on from right (near motor)to left. It puts the final connection on the outside where you can see it better and make adjustments. I hope one of these helps cure your problem. Very informative video. I was trying to figure out which 25-50 to buy, now I need to throw 22-44 oscillating drum sander into the mix. I am surprised Jet offers an oscillating sander, but Powermatic does not. But my question is: do you have any issue feeding several 3/5" face frame stiles and rails through prior to assembly with the oscillating motion? I assume as long as you stack several together and take very small "cuts", it should be fine. Just curious if you've tried this. Thanks, HB

I'm not sure I totally understand the question. Your concern is feeding pre-assembled rails/stile face frames with one of the two being perpendicular to the spinning drum. Correct? A definite concern with a drum sander, and actually the oscillation helps a lot with sander marks going across the grain line. Depending on the wood species you'll still likely have to hit it with an orbital before staining. That said the oscillating drum help get them perfectly flush with minimal impact. hi mark, i have the jet 16/32 and on the whole im pretty happy with it, i had an issue where the jet paper tore and bunched up during sanding , by the time i got to the off switch it had forced a pinch point on the drum and damaged a bearing, , other than that its been reliable, not sure id buy one again though, im thinking of getting the jet 12 inch planer thicknesser with a spiral head, are you still happy with yours? regards

I still love it. Like I mentioned it is an occasionally used tool. I ordered it from woodcraft and it shipped directly from Jet (which I believe is typical). I'm not sure it was in a warehouse or from Taiwan. But it took months for it to show up after I ordered it.

Might be more practical to drive down to Washington and buy one at Home Depot and customs clear it myself. Think it would fit in the back of a Cherokee with the seats down?

I had the Performax 22-44 in my shop for over 15 years and finally gave it away. Drum sanders take up so much space and in reality, aren't all that useful. Save $3K and build your projects better rather than look for a sander to eliminate imperfections.
