Very informative video. Thanks 👍🏼😎 Which important maintenance service would you recommend based on the millage for this S55 engine? and when these are done which" OTHER" services/parts would you do or replaced while doing this? Thanks again!!

I only had the drainback valve come out when i accidentally dropped the housing cap. It exploded when it hit the ground and still haven't recovered the pieces to this day. So glad I didn't run the car without it after hearing this.

I bought my 17 f80 comp dct in the 20k mile range. I'm at almost 95k miles now. My charge cooler failed at 49k. I've changed plugs, fluids, charge cooler, chargepipes (preventative), and brakes. I have a front end thud (def suspension related. Undiagnosed specifically) when I hit bumps even at low speeds which doesn't seem to affect drive ability of the car. I also have hi speed brake wobble which new rotors will surely fix. Plan on keeping the car and driving a lot and hard for the foreseeable future

Sharing time. As an owner of an 88 Targa (I really want a white coupe like this one!!!). I can say that one will be spending a ton of time and money (insane money if a shop does the work) on almost any used G series 911 if you want a it sorted. I got mine for a really good deal a few years ago from a business associates wife that had it sitting in a garage for 5 years ($30k and l'm lucky that there was zero corrosion as it was stored property). Fast forward 3 years and $24k later to get it fully sorted and I'm only 90% complete (most of what is left is minor interior and the AC system). Sadly, if you are in the market for one, I would figure an engine rebuild if it has not been done. My engine was at 92,000 miles was running great with lots of little leaks (all of these cars leak), but I got a fuel line leak which required removing the all the intake off to repair. When I started the work I noticed all the electrical connections, hoses, etc. were all cracked and nasty. So I bit the bullet and pulled the engine and sent it off for a proper rebuild to replace all those old bits, as I felt I would be chasing little gremlins if I didn't do it right. Amazing car, but not for the faint of heart. But the prices for these are still pretty high, considering that the vast majority will need significant work to be properly sorted.

I've drowned more cars than I care to remember..... many. Funniest was attempting an approach to a glacier, in winter, after heavy rain...... the approach is 27km..... 16 miles of rock hopping up a constantly changing braided river, the flow at full flood is over a mile wide, when it's dryish it's 6-7 streams, glacier fed, cold motherfuckers, winter or summer, it's meltwater. It was midwinter in the South Island of New Zealand, cold as a witches tit.... there had been rain, an attempt at this was somewhat foolish. We had made 7-8 crossings uneventfully, wading deep. Three up in the rig, miles from help, end of the day..... all of our shit was in the rig. The last crossing I hit a hole, water up to the wipers, truck at a serious angle. Everything went quiet, I thought the fire was out, looked down and the tachometer was resting 750rpm. Hit reverse, it just popped out onto a shingle bank, sat there idling, water pouring out of the chassis rails..... 1996 Gen3 Toyota Hilux Surf or 4Runner as they call them in the states....you never need another car..... cheers from NZ..... oh, go US Army!

It was on its way to crush competition on the track, in typical VW fashion. At least the development was not lost, as some of it made into the CUPRA.

A couple of general questions and some specific ones, please. Does this procedure work OK for the '09 Dodge Sprinter Van, with the Mercedes diesel engine (VIN label says "Made in Germany by Mercedes" and the VIN Mfr Code is Germany)? This procedure is similar to the one for my '03 VW TDi which has 570,000 miles on it. Always on Mobil 5W-40 "Turbo Diesel Truck" oil. It's interesting to me that the Mercedes-approved Mobil-1 ESP 5W-30 only carries an API rating for "Spark engine" (SP) but the note on the Mobil-1 website says "Recommended for Diesel engines with exhaust particulate filter" which the 09 Sprinter has. I'd like to use the 5W-40 oil (oh, my the inside of my VW engine is clean and there's no measurable wear inside) because it's good and I have a case in my garage but I'll go with the 5W-30 gasoline-engine oil in my Mercedes diesel engine. The VW oil is changed using what the VW guys call the "Mercedes oil change system". I have a 12V oil extraction pump, a metal pipe goes down through the dipstick tube and will withdraw the VW sump oil in approx. 40 seconds. Then I use it on the cartridge oil filter housing to get another 1/2 litre out. No need to crawl under, get oil all over the floor, etc. Will this work on the Mercedes engine (it leaves much less oil in the VW engine than draining it so I'd like to use this system if it works)? The O-rings on the oil filter canister cap are very similar on both engines. VW filters have a no-drain-back tube in each filter with a marking "Oben/Top" on one end. Does the Mercedes filter have a requirement for a particular end upwards? I've always poured at least a litre of the new oil in the VW oil filter canister before reinstalling the new oil filter and canister cap (also 25 N/meters on the VW, too) so that is 1 out of five and I plan to pre-oil the filter canister on my Mercedes. Is there any reason to not do this? Thanks for the info on this video, it's very helpful. BH North Carolina, USA '03 VW TDi, 570,000 miles '09 Dodge/Mercedes diesel, 290,000 miles

BMW hasn't learnt anything from the N54 if they're still using cheap plastic components and also poor gasket's that need replacing every few years. Shameful consumer driven mentality rather than the "BMW Reliability" that we used to love in older cars.

About the crank hub and it seeming to affect DCT cars more: I've seen surveys that do seem to indicate that DCT cars are affected by that part slipping about twice as often as manual cars. BUT! BMW sold 4 times as many DCT cars as manual. With that in mind it would seem to indicate that the DCT cars are actually half as likely to have this issue. While the DCT is capable of super fast shifts, it's also not going to have a clumsy/aggressive driver dumping the clutch on upshifts or ever having a non rev-matched downshift like you can with a manual. Just food for thought...
@ohtwo238 сағат бұрын
It affects dct cars more because many more dct gearboxes were made. If you break down the #'s it's 4x more likely to have ch failure in a 6mt than dct
