BenBen When taking springs off or putting them on use a 8-10 inch loop of string. I use builders string. slip over end and pull and remove string or install spring. give it a try been doing it for 40+ years

@@stan525 I've got the shrouds back on it now. I think when I had them off was around winter time? I never took a temp gun to it, the only "check" I did was feel the top shrouds after it was driven lots. I read that they shouldn't burn to the touch (shroud above the fan with the numbers stamped in) But factory knows best so I've got them installed with the thermostat doors held open because the thermostats broke on mine.

@@DanaColvin They were meant as a temporary fix. If your carb fittings are leaking, check the flared fitting ends for deep grooves or unevenness. I ended up resurfacing my carb flare fitting pieces, but that took long so I recommend buying new ones.

Im a little confused. Did you say three speed or four? Also the gasket leak under the oil filler tube, ( i dont know what its called) but that thing is warped? I had a leak there and put one of the blue ones from cal corvair, cheap, and it works good. Also that doner WAS a 63. Keep us updated

@@davidp187 I thought it might have been a fourspeed, was going to take it either way. Yes that thing (also don't know the official name) 😅. The larger lower part that the balancer is part of is a bit uneven and I tapped the bold holes when I was younger and less experienced, may have had 1 or 2 not straight causing a leak? Yes the donor was also a 63 but the mechanical was 64. Had the leaf spring and carbs were 64. I'll make an update video soon!

Cool to hear from you. Ben Ben Ben. Ok, run the Napa pump also. They last a long time. You need to get the by pass block for the fuel pump. You can get it from Cal Corvairs. Then all is good. I'm concerned about the bottom. Wheel bearings suck when they go out. Make sure you know what's going on there. The knocking can't be good. I have a diff sitting that was good but I got a rebuilt one from the Corvair Ranch. I just wanted a higher ratio. the water thing sucks. Water is comming in on the drivers side floor and I can't figure it out. Hope you figure stuff out. Your plans sound awesome. Can't wait.

It's either a '62 with '63 front trim on it for some reason, or a '63 with '62 belt line trim. Definitely not a '60 or '61, judging by the master cylinder. Strangely, it also has '64 rear suspension.

@@benbencorvair9071 you do have to have a differential to match 4 speeds, I can probably get you one of those too but its probably going to be a 3.55 ratio. The thing that kills the 3 speeds for most people is that the gears aren’t synchronous so you can’t use decompression from downshifting to stop in an emergency.

I have the rtobone style pipes sitting in my basement for the last 5 years. everyone I've talked to says they are way too loud and really drone. Was thinking about cutting the trombone tips welding harley mufflers which I have sitting i my father's garage . Reading the comments, I suspect the lower shrouds can be reinstalled after adding these?

4:50 shows you not only took spark plugs out but the pushrod tubes too. I bet you were fighting the pushrod tubes the most as they are pressed in. I am in the middle of doing this to diagnose my low compression on 2 cylinders on the drivers side.

Try "aviation form a gasket" let it sit on gasket surfaces for a couple of hours, gently tighten down, good as done. Works great on warped/uneven surfaces,turns paper-cork gaskets into a silicone-like surface. Aviation Form A Gasket never sets up fully, which makes it great for collant and oil mating surfaces; one important criteria have a good layer gasket surface while setting up, and do not overtighten area you want to be leak free

@@dmcnamara9859 Thank you! I'll definitely give it a try. I have since taken off the alternator/filter assembly and tried decking at again on a flat granite table. I got very flat but it only slowed the leak down. It may also have something to do with having to over size the bolt holes, maybe the holes are not exactly straight and there is binding causing slight warping once installed..

@@benbencorvair9071brush 1/16 inch ish layer of Aviation Form A Gasket on mating and gasket surfaces allow it to setup a couple hours prior to recommended torque spec. It won't leak any more if you follow that be patient procedure.

@@benbencorvair9071 Yes you should have since it's almost impossible to clean all the gunk out of the old converters. It might be wise to do a few transmission fluid exchanges going forward, just in case the new fluid gets contaminated. I enjoy your videos. Brings back a lot of good memories! Not all Chevy mechanics from that time period liked working on Corvairs. I personally did and owned several of them.

I am happy with the look of mine, but I do wish they were a bit louder.. also the paint on them has just about all peeled off..

I had a 3 speed trans in my 62 corvair. That was the only thing I didn't like. After I sold it the new owner came to me with a 4 speed trans/axle assy to have installed. I did it and that made that car perfect. With the 3 speed there was way too much rpm drop. Shifting to 2nd made it rev too high, like when passing another car. Just my real world opinion.
