Love the shows! An impact gun works really well to remove the alternator nut. You can easily hold the fan with a shop rag or towel.

Nice vid. Part number and alternator specs would be nice.

It is amazing that you can use the new bearing in the old front end and the new alternator actually bolts up to the old front half. I guess very little advancement in design!

Hey Kiddo, You must have an old soul. Because you like these weird cars (I can say that because I have a 64 Monza). I didn't know it got so cold in Texas I am in New Mexico. You sure are getting into your Corvair. My father was a Mechanic and no one wanted Corvairs when I grew up so we had a bunch of them around. Actually they are really great cars-just different. I am curious as to why and how you got into Corvairs? Thanks from NM!
@benbencorvair90713 жыл бұрын
I've been told that before. it's going to be in the single digits this week, sure is out of the normal for Texas. My Dad bought the Corvair a couple years back, it didn't interest me much at that time, I also didn't know much about cars then. As I got into cars more I kinda fell in love with it, it's such a unique and looked over car. Really happy I get to work on it and share it with all of you guys!

Love the video but ... Just a suggestion, after taking the belt off, leave the alternator on the engine when you are removing the nut, you should have enough room for the Allen key and a wrench, it makes it a lot easier.
@benbencorvair90713 жыл бұрын
That sure does sound like an easier way! Thanks for the tip.

Check for bad grounds on the rear taillights. Corvairs were great cars. I had 3 coups and a van.

Gen light always comes on when alternator NOT charging and engine throws a belt as well. I saw this all too often on both my 63 and 69 Corvairs. Be careful NOT to tighten fan belt too tight as it will cause wear and burnout of fan bearing and the fan bearing is a "pressed" engine bearing, and is difficult and expensive to replace.

I noticed you don’t have the side brace that goes on left side of alternator to engine block. Seems you don’t need it but GM thought it was important. Is yours a single wire or are you still using the voltage regulator?
@benbencorvair90713 жыл бұрын
I also noticed that after seeing pictures of other Corvairs setup. The altornator is internationally regulated, I had to splice some wires in the harness for it to work.

@@benbencorvair9071 I'm installing a new alternator in this sandrail that's powered with a corvair powertrain as we speak. this thang was parked for over 20 years and it's my job to get her going again. I need to start making videos, I tinker with some pretty cool things with and without motors But I have no idea if this new alternator has a voltage regulator internally?? hope so because I removed the external V.R. all the wires which wasnt much were toast. Any idea how to find out? 65 or 66' corvair w/ 2 barrel Holley carb.

I belive the one I bought was from summit racing. It is an internally regulated AC Delco one. Gen light does not come on.

Ben Ben Ben Ben, hey Man I'm installing an internally regulated alternator. I thought I saw a video of yours were you eliminated the regulator and mounted a junction box on the back (er front?) Wall. Was that you? Was it this video? 🤔

Yeah I did install a junction block. I mounted it on driver side close to the fire wall. Next to the battery, I should be on this video.
