As a fan of Dylan I have been looking forward to this biopic and to your review. Do have a question, do you think someone that is not familiar with Bob Dylan would enjoy this picture ? Was wanting to take my husband but did not know if the sound of Bob Dylan music might be too much for a newbie. Really enjoyed your thoughts on this picture, looking forward to seeing it. Take care and have a happy new year!
@MeanMrMayoКүн бұрын
Hi. Yes, I definitely feel that anyone will like this picture - it's a good story, and well acted. A person does not need to know anything about Dylan in advance. Also, the music chosen here is well done and very moving, and not at all "too much" for a newbie.

Hi Joe. Maybe I know too much about Dylan, but I’m quite wary of this film and biopics overall, after suffering through too many, and after the Elton John “Rocket Man” one, which for me was the absolute bottom of the barrel, I swore off seeing them anymore. A lot of it is the historical inaccuracies, and based on your synopsis and others, it seems like it’s utterly loaded with them. It probably is an entertaining film , but I think I’ll pass. Nice review. - Thomas Calden
@MeanMrMayoКүн бұрын
Thanks, Thomas.. but I wouldn't even see ROCKET MAN as I heard it was so inaccurate. I don't think that was much the case here, but as most are saying this is a pretty fine picture. If you change your mind, let me know!

On the spur of the moment I decided to go to “A Complete Unknown” and I ended up having a good time. As a biopic it was as misleading and inaccurate as the Elton John “Rocket Man” pic, taking constant liberties with the facts, particularly with its timelines and with Dylan’s relationships with the main characters. And it continued the persistent myth of Dylan impressing Woody Guthrie as his heir apparent. According to everyone who was there, including Pete Seeger - Bob was just another visitor, nobody was sure if Woody recognized anybody, even long time friends and family. (By all accounts the meeting with Guthrie was very profound for Bob though). So that aspect of the movie was disappointing to me.. That being said, “A Complete Unknown” is a much better film imo than “Rocket Man” or the Johnny Cash bio “Walk The Line”. The reason to me, is that “Unknown” is really a story about the ending of that generation of folk music’s popularity, which started in the early 1940’s and basically was put to an end in terms of its popularity and influence - by Dylan. I thought that the sets and cinematography and period feel were very well done, as well as the acting - you were right, Edward Norton was superb as Pete Seeger, an Oscar-worthy performance, and I thought that Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, and Elle Fanning as Suze Rotolo, (or Sylvie Russo in the film) were also very good. So for me, I rate “A Complete Unknown” 3 out of 4 stars. Thanks again for your review.
@MeanMrMayoКүн бұрын
@TomCwimpRock So glad you saw and liked the movie, and your rating is very respectable. I appreciate the feedback on the details and liberties taken, though I can't stand when biopics like this go too far astray. Thanks, Thomas!

What baffles me is they didn't bother to get the proper harmonica holder. The older one Dylan used was completely different. Looks like they picked a new one up from the store. I play music and harmonica, so it's hard not to notice. Other wise a decent movie
@larryzink8978Күн бұрын
It's not an accident or oversight, my friend. Somebody wanted to put their own stamp onto Dylan, to show Bobby that they are the boss. Its a power trip exerting control over him and his image. Real Soviet revisionism. I refuse to see this movie to witness the displacement of the reality . Something is happening, Mr. Jones. Scarcity from scant information stokes creative mental activity while info overload induces lethargy. AI version of the Sistine ceiling is now the only available image of it. I'm not there made sense, imagination was stimulated. This is just more virtual carp extinguishing reality and memory.

I like your commentary, and I definitely want to go see this film. I've read a book and a half about Dylan, but I don't know if there was a love triangle with him, Suze Rotolo and Joan Baez. He was with Baez almost immediately after breaking up with Rotolo, but I don't know how much of an overlap there was. His "Ballad in Plain D" on Another Side of Bob Dylan was about his breakup with Suze, but I don't know how much of its sad lyrics were accurate to what really happened. In the song, he blames the breakup on Suze's unnamed sister, but I don't know if she was a fictionalization to personify their situation or if he really had conflicts with the sister. I'll have to read more about his life in 1964 to find out.

It took me a while to get Dylan. My brother had some of his albums and I couldn't really take the sound of his voice. He's since not only grown on me, but he's a phenomenal musician, singer/songwriter. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the film. I was having a great time because whenever an historic artifact like the Highway 61 whistle would appear, "Hey, yeah! That's the whistle in Highway 61, and on and on. The bit about Judas that has me rankled is a woman shouts out "Judas!" at Newport. The Albert Hall CD has it happening, well...there, and it's clearly a man on the CD, so why would they set it somewhere else, and why would the heckler be turned into a woman? The film is also loads of fun to talk about, fun to see....Two of us were the only ones laughing and reacting to various scenes...and nobody else. What a dead crowd.

Chirping 10 years later...Anything printed past '67 is "eh" to me especially the tributes and people mags, death mags etc. I got hundreds of them and I don't think i could sell 'em. MOJO and Q are great post mania mags because they are huge UK printed on nice stock with TONS of photos but again as far as collectible -eh, no, not in the $$ sense but certainly in the Beatle sense. The best are the 16 Magazines from '64 to '67 and to a lesser degree Teen Screen and Tiger Beat maybe Datebook but really if you have the 16 magazines that came out every month @ 25¢ per and mailed in for the Special Editions (I still have the Help one) you got hundreds of photos and posters and not just Beatles - the whole invasion. Gloria Stavers was a mystery, enigma but she MADE the Beatlemania years for we kids. The one-offs that came out right when they hit are cool - you have a couple here - one may be foreign but still those are legit. By late '66 -'67 Hullabaloo mag which became Circus ushered in Pepper Hendrix and Doors and Psychedelic era and then Creem, Crawdaddy and then the mac daddy popped up Rolling Stone as a big fishwrap, innocence and any 'mania' now a distant memory. That's why I have a special place for the media and promo like Beatle cards etc of late '63 through '67. My 2¢ as dude that lived it in real time and later worked @ Capitol as an OG fanboy, lol. ☮
