"There is so much raw authenticity in the mess" is so true. Sometimes my favourite parts of a doc is when there's that audio "fourth wall break" where you hear the noise hissing from the gain boost because somebody off camera said something unsuspected.

You have such a talent for capturing raw moments as they unfold Austin! It’s SO helpful to get be able to peak into your process and to see what it takes to build an emotionally captivating scene. I think, for me, this video solidified the importance of leaning into your instincts when it comes to documentary film.

Austin I'd love to hear more about how you prepare for verite style doc. You mentioned in the last video having a series of scenes each with its own in and out. How do you plan it as a whole? What discussions with the key characters? When do you decide on using a narrator? (PS I mainly make corporate videos and would like to incorporate more showing rather than explaining via interviews, but it can be a hard sell)

when working in 4K and delivering in 4K what specs do you need on your computer and hard drives?
@austinmeyerfilmsКүн бұрын
I am not sure of the exact specs. But I edit footage off the Crucial X9 Pro SSD (amzn.to/4aeqdnf). On my MacBook Pro with the Apple M2 Max chip, I can cut through 4K footage pretty seamlessly. But when I edit on my 2020 iMac I make proxy files of all the videos and edit using those!

@austinmeyerfilmsКүн бұрын
You just need to make sure that you get the Cos11 that says it is specifically for Sony transmitters. They make different mics for different transmitters. Really enjoyed your story. My story is much like your story. Finished my first film in 1985, went to National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington D.C. and auditioned my first film, "Wild and wonderful Alaska". Got a contract to present my film on their series a Constitution Hall in Washington D. C. Went so well i did 5 more films for their series at Constitution Hall. Worked 8 more years in producing those 5 films. Made enough money to build my first home, paying for it completely on that film. National Geographic was good to me and i owe them a lot for my 25 years in the business.

@ Quick question: As one who films in a similar style, there are often times I miss critical moments or behavior due to covering reactions and aesthetics. Given the unpredictable nature of these situations. Is it challenging for you, as a single shooter to remain still and capture raw behavior in the wide?

Well done, Austin. Thank you for posting. There are.some doc series I've watched on TV where the music was way louder than the voice. These are some fairly large budget productions (for a doc). I'm not sure what's happening. I'm wondering if the music was mixed too loud in post, or if it was mixed well in post and the broadcast was simply playing the music track too loud. As a director, I would not be happy to see (hear) that. :)

Scene approach and planning your in and outs are a great reminder. Do you ever get room tone to help blend your cuts? Really great how you get more coverage by quickly getting your details panning and zooming as it happens - allows them to cut together nicely. Whenever I'm in the editing stage, I'm always like ahhh, why didn't I hold on that longer!? You get fomo thinking there's action happening elsewhere. So, how do you remind yourself of those "next time, I'm going to...." moments?
@austinmeyerfilms7 күн бұрын
For a lot of times the projects I am working on, we’re in and out of rooms pretty quick, so I am not getting room tone. But if you have time for it and you’re thinking more ahead than me haha, then it is definitely worth grabbing! And I hear you on the fomo of action. I learn time and time and time again that reaction shots are the things that I never have enough of. So that’s one of those things I have to keep reminding myself of. And when it comes to keeping those reminders, I have no system haha. Just try my best to remember and do better than I did the previous time
