From watching numerous vids of the Build show I believe in many instances there are two drainage systems. External (yours) and internal, which is essentially mimicking the exterior system and then sumps to catch and then discharge any water. I would hazard a guess that this might be need in very high water table areas but I do not know that for sure.

You got it. Risk vs effort. If we suspect high water table or difficult to manage site water an interior partner drain is added often.

I wish someone would have educated me early on to seriously appraise the client as much as you would the project and the bid. If for any reason you have concerns about the client, politely walk away. Good business is best when all parties are on the same page My two cents. Good video and thanks to all of you for sharing... 😁👍

I really appreciate this conversation. A home is often the most valued item a person owns. Because of this, it can bring forth strong emotions. Those emotions and expectations must be managed well. If they are not it can eat you up and make the home building process bad for all parties involved.

Envirostrap and In So Fast make EPS wall foams with studs inside. The AMVIC ENVIROSHEET has either plastic or wood studs and either flush or proud, so it could be on exterior for rainscreen or interior for wall cladding. Glues to the concrete wall ( no framing)

Jake, you need to pay more attention to the depth of the backer rod for that interior air seal to perform long term. Optimal width of joint is 2x depth (2:1). Buy a backer rod insertion tool to maintain consistent depth.

My experience with tilt turn windows in Italy is that they almost always paired with functional shutters, and to a lesser extent, retractable awnings. Shutters might slow the breeze that causes a window to swing. That said, all of the windows I interacted with also had a bar or stopper of some sort to hold them in place when opened. I’m curious about how the screens work with shutters … the screen will have to retract or pivot somehow.

Wouldn’t it be easier to use ICF to maintain continuity with the insulation?
@jake.bruton.aarow.building
@jake.bruton.aarow.building 5 күн бұрын
Potentially. The issue is then you have to protect the ICF on the exterior side of the wall.

Jake learned the hard way, it seems. Flex drain pipe should never be used around a foundation - it crushes too easily. Jake is using the best product - rigid SDR perforated drain pipe. Only thing I'd add is a few cleanouts - if there's ever a problem, you can scope the drain and run a snake down it. Top notch install, as usual. For any potential clients reading this - hire this man - he's a helluva good builder - pay him well and it will be the best money you'll ever spend. I'd hire him over Matt Risenger any day.

If I also add a plastic layer under the ridgid foam, will it work for radon mitigation? Is it better to add plastic under or on top of foam?
@jake.bruton.aarow.building

I like the poly layer on top of the foam so that when I start to place concrete the concrete doesnt get between the foam and start to float my foam. Ask me why I like this method?

Subterra-Plus is rated for a radon barrier if the seams are taped. That may eliminate another layer to detail.

The radiant barrier on that is almost useless with all that labeling printed on it, jeeze your never going to see it after it's covered up, seems like they care more about advertising than insulation.

I have a garage under my split level ranch here in VT and it’s been challenging to get my air and vapor barrier continuity around that to separate the living space from the garage space. I’m hopeful in future videos as the project progresses you’ll show us those details.

I think this and their bat material make a lot of sense for DIY installations, as a homeowner I don’t want to deal with the downsides of fiberglass or cellulose or frankly even rockwool and the PPE it requires. The moisture management potential is also really interesting for humid climate situations.

From what I can tell - when drywall is the air barrier on a ceiling (vented attic) you still require a continuous polyethelen vapour retarder between truss/drywall (Canada but similar to climate zone 6) - would you think thats necessary or no? Thanks!!
@jake.bruton.aarow.building
@jake.bruton.aarow.building 12 күн бұрын
I would encourage the use of a smart vapor retarder over simple poly, but yes, that could work. If you check out some of our newer content on thebuildshow.com you will see methods that include just the smart vapor retarders from Sigs as the air barrier. This video is actually from 2019 and republished here later.

The reason the granite counter top "feels" colder than the wooden cutting board is that human sense "heat flow" and not temperature. Our brains attach a "preceived" temperature to that heat flow rate that our skin detects. You also fail to discuss the thermal mass of the insulated concrete and how high mass materials stabilize temperature. Insulating the concrete make a lot of sense but some of your understanding is not correct.

Some of the opening angle limiters have adjustable resistance so the wing doesn't flap around with every light breeze. Please do not attribute ANY safety to a tilted window. It's as "safe" as an open window. If you are familiar with the mechanics of turn and tilt windows, you can easily open them from the outside when tilted, without leaving any damage. The switch pin is easily reachable. You hold it down with your finger or just stick something in there. Then you reach into the inside from the upper, wider part of the opening and push down the lever - that is now unlocked - into it's horizontal position and that's the end of the story. If you can get leverage on the bolts, you don't even have to reach inside. The lever moves the bolts. The bolts move the lever. You can just use the mechanics in reverse with enough force. Tilted windows are the No1 targets for burglars in many european countries.

Been living in my current home for 20 years. I noticed that the plans specified 5/8” drywall. My house has 1/2” drywall. I discovered other plan to actual inconsistencies. I bought this house as a spec home already under construction-fixed price model. I bet the builder made off with a killing. I learned my lesson. In the health insurance industry and managed prescription drug benefits. I always contracted with 100% transparency. I want to know the price of everything that I’m buying and then a separate line item for labor and an admin fee. so I prefer the cost plus model as long as there’s honesty and integrity and not gamesmanship. The right to audit in my opinion is important component to maintaining that integrity. It is a trust, but verify model.

I hadn't used that dimple mat before and for some reason I put the dimples out. I did install self adhesive membrane behind it. And I added silt fabric in front of it. And drain is below top of footer. So far very dry basement after very hard rains. Like you say one chance to do it while it's easy to get to.
