HELIOS is only installed in DDG-88, while the less powerful ODIN (which is only a dazzler) is in six destroyers (DDG 100, DDG 104, DDG 105, DDG 106, DDG 111, DDG 113)

Correct! The only reason I did not mention ODIN was because it is a dazzler and not meant for any offensive combat operations in terms of taking down incoming ordinance.

TODAY . . . the Chinese outnumber our total surface combatant count world wide. The Chinese are building the equivalent of the entire French Navy every four years. The U.S. Navy is under 300 surface combatants and have been shrinking. The U.S. Navy cannot even replace attrition at present. Our Logistics Support Fleet mostly run by the Military Sealift Command is old, shrinking, and must grow to support current operations . . . forget about trying to support a growing Navy. The Frigate was supposed to be coming out very soon, but as it is . . . we MAY see one in five or six years…so expensive Destroyers is the only game in town with their high Operations and Maintenance budget that goes with them. We have NO CAPABLE SMALL SURFACE COMBATANTS!!!! The fastest way to turn around the deficit in Surface Combatant numbers is to build for the ESCORT requirement that the Navy let go over a decade ago, and told the Military Sealift Command - Merchant Marine Fleet to steam alone and afraid. With friends like that who needs enemies. That solution would look like a more heavily armed USCG Offshore Patrol Cutter painted grey and having a multi-warfare capability. The U.S. Navy needs a new Aegis Destroyer Escort that can be built quickly, built in more than one shipyard, can be based at smaller ports like USCG Cities as we stand-up a new Reserve Destroyer Escort Program. Eastern Shipbuilding has delivered the first OPC to the USCG with a complete Technical Data Package (TDP), which is something that the LCS never accomplished, and the FFG-62 program is still struggling with . . . and the frigates are already under construction(?). Eastern should be provided the opportunity to build the balance of the USCG OPCs (10-units) and develop the TDP for an Aegis Destroyer Escort. An abbreviated SQQ-89(V)X Anti-Submarine Warfare Control System (ASWCS) should be installed on all USCG OPCs to increase Anti-Submarine Warfare capability. Now we do not have enough of MSC ships to support our fleet with NO SPARES in the wings. GREAT PLANNING? The new John Lewis T-AO must be upgraded to AOE capability and another shipyard brought on line to build them. The Marines want a new next-generation medium amphibious ship. Study and development is taking way too long and they are still years out from anything. We should buy 'off the shelf' and bolt on upgrades. Multiple capable candidates exist with designs that are already mature. Select one and move out.

Contracting officers are allowed to request official and unofficial cost and price data from the seller on large DOD contracts, as outlined in Section 15 of the FAR. While sellers can technically price gouge if the sellers price is considered too high the buyer has the right to cancel payments and even entire contracts while still holding onto the product. Make no mistake, the DOD will always get what it wants at a price it is atleast semi-comfortable with.
@wms-h2v
@wms-h2v 8 күн бұрын
While I agree with what you say, the issue is the fact that the DOD is in a tight spot when it comes to equipment right now, especially with the Ukraine War and the current state of the US Military which seems to be on the backfoot in terms of munitions based on data coming out of Yemen. Additionally, the military and the government both have issues overspending currently which makes the situation worse. The price they may be comfortable with is not necessarily the price that is fair based on the circumstances of our political and conflict climate.

Fact check. America hasn't caught up with its rivals in hypersonic missile technology; there is no operationally deployed hypersonic cruise missile being used by US forces. Though the US has greatly increased its artillery production, it will take literally years to get to the production level that Russia alone has today. Then, how do you know the US stealth fighters are "a hundred times stealthier than the Russian and Chinese counterparts"? Because Lockheed Martin told you so?
@wms-h2v
@wms-h2v 8 күн бұрын
While you are correct that we have not deployed the weapon system itself, the Mako missile system from Lockheed Martin has preformed well in tests and displayed abilities equal to that of its Chinese and Russian counterparts. I never stated the technology was active, just that we have caught up after being behind in the technology level. I never said that we were equal to Russia in production, we are not in war and as such it would not make sense that our production would rival Russia. We have data of the aircraft from radar systems on bases and around the world as China and Russia gather the same data we have. Yes Lockheed says this, however, in this case we have substantial evidence to back this up both from the designs of the aircraft in question and their performance in the field.

Just a friendly reminder: When talking about individual consoles you refer to them as "units". "Copies" is used when referring to an individual software sale. There are many more problems plaguing the gaming industry right now though. Making games more profitable certainly is one of the bigger ones but it goes hand in hand with the publishers pleasing the shareholders more than the customers by releasing the same old stuff with improved graphics over and over again instead of bringing something fresh and new. That's basically why indie games are so successful right now: They do bring innovation. That however is always threatened by the fact that the gaming industry always was pretty nuts about patenting the most basic concepts. Those are rarely enforced until now but if they are it can easily ruin a smaller studio let alone single indie dev. We will see how this plays out with Palworld where Nintendo just filed a lawsuit against because of some obscure patent. One of the very few cases but this could become much more common with more and more indie games becoming successful. Then there is the trend to always improve graphics. The gaming industry currently faces the problem that games just get way too expensive because the graphical fidelity is costly to implement, and more often than not the other aspects of a game like a good story suffer from it. This dramatic increase in production cost also comes down to in-game purchases being used to offset those costs. An increasing number of games are just not profitable anymore. And those are just a few of the problems. Studios are being lost, skilled talents leaving the industry because of various reasons, most notably the abusive working conditions, etc. I expect at least one major publisher to file for bankruptcy rather sooner than later atm. Possibly Ubisoft. It's a really exciting time right now if you like to observe and a horrible time if you just want to play AAA games. There are plenty good ones still but that might change in the coming years.
@wms-h2v
@wms-h2v 13 күн бұрын
Yea I realized after I uploaded that I kept saying copies instead of units, poor phrasing on my part! I was going to discuss remakes and the stagnation of original content, but the video was already long enough and I wasn't sure how well this would do so I decided to keep it out and just explain at the base level the indie vs AAA industry. Same thing with the Nintendo Lawsuit, studio closures, game development costs, and the overall loss of talent, interesting and relevant topics but too much to add in. I could make this an hour long video and still not cover everything sadly. The industry needs a reset on several issues and sadly I think much of the AAA market we have all grown used to may be taken down with it because they will not be able to adapt. I appreciate the feedback and if I do a follow up video to this I will make sure to touch on these issues!

I apologize that you did not enjoy the video, however, I am confused by the point you are presenting. The US is involved here because of the broader stability aspects and credible threats to Europe, thus we do have a dog in this race as you say. It is also true that the inactivity of the Obama and Biden administrations prior to the conflict likely had an impact on Putin's expectations for the war and the West's response being minimal. The plan presented in the video is the plan that Trump has publicly announced, he has explicitly said he wants a ceasefire and to end the war specifically to stop the death. So what exactly was there an issue with? I am to ensure any content I make represents the current state of affairs properly so if I am missing information I would be happy to be corrected.

Since railguns are a new technology, it hasn't been perfected enough to act as a space launch system. As for a spin launch and humans, I've always been fascinated by an idea presented in a sci-fi story, where space ships were launched from airless colonies effectively by giant rail guns, so the ship's rocket propellant usage was minimized. The passengers were protected from the hundreds of g's of acceleration by being immersed in a tank of water with a breathing device during the launch. (Later, that water would be purified and used as the recyclable water supply, then used for passengers again at a catch decelerator -- essentially a rail gun in reverse.) I'm not sure how much compressive pressure there would be, but it seems like this could work up to a point.

I've never head of this submergence idea before, but (and correct me if I am wrong) wouldn't the water pressure just increase and still transfer the force onto the body? I had some friends who were in Northern Vermont during early testing. They reported the booms, and later found out the source. The original effort was US/Canadian. And to allow access to the cross border activities there was an "approved" border crossing for this purpose, only. At the VT/Canadian border. The mention of "sabot" is not complete. A "sabot" is part of the projectile the surrounds the "bullet" or "rocket." It contains the business part of that which is to be shot, and it falls away or disintegrates upon leaving the barrel. It seals the propellant gases until it clears the muzzle. It protects the barrel and projectile during the firing. Some modern tanks shoot very hard penetrator bullets within a sabot shell. Without it the bullet would damage the barrel which is much softer metal. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Research_Corporation gives some background. The project for space launching faded away. But many of the lessons learned were incorporated in late artillery guns, giving them more range. Somewhere there was a report of a gun the Germans were working on that was a monster. The Nazis wanted to shoot at England and France, beyond any artillery range. The story was... A very long barrel. And along the inside of the barrel were explosive charges that would detonate as the projectile past them. Each pushing the "bullet" faster. Essentially like a rail gun where each magnet gives a little more push along the rail. Only this push was chemical not magnetic. I think "too cumbersome to be practical," described it's demise. (If true.)

Thank you for the addendum on the sabot round, I sometimes leave info out, but in this case I thought that it referred to the round itself so thank you for the info! While it was never completed, the construction got far enough to warrant a strike by American forces.

Actually there was talk of putting more of the Bradly style auto-cannons to take out drones and small boats since the gun is compact enough to work for the role and the US Military has a few of them to test the concept out. Bigger gun and nuclear reactors is still a bit off though due to shipbuilding restraints.
@charlesmaurer6214
@charlesmaurer6214 2 ай бұрын
I picture a multirole battleship like design. Base it on the Iowa footprint and replace the main guns with about double to triple a missile cruiser load out as a start. Aft ad a two bay four craft hanger for helicopters/VSTOL and a well deck (Smaller but like the Landing Assault Carriers) The well deck would be used either for special ops or the augment the Landing Assault Carriers. To replace the bombardment feature of the classic battleships above the hanger and forward taking much less space than the old main guns mount two pair of rail guns with w 5 to 15lbs hypersonic slug. Also perhaps add a powerful laser or maser weapon that with the railguns would be electrical powered reducing explosion risk of the old main mags. With a nuclear powerplant, CWIS and 5 inch secondaries you could have a 40-45 knot Swiss army knife of a warship able to operate either on it's own or augment nearly any fleet action. In the 80s a missile battleship was proposed but the fail point was too many missiles on one platform and lack of production in volume if ever needed. By only doing 2-3X the missile cruisers and using the remaining space for other weapons and roles it would gain back much the classic roles such ships once had in a prior era. Plus that hanger add a smaller short hanger deck above for misc. drones (while useful should the ship take a pounding the upper hanger is not vital and would place the armor deck below and an center armored riser between bays for the guns. The flight decks on carriers is not armored but the deck below is to allow non critical and repairable damage to the upper deck but preserve vitals below. I also could see a set of floating bases with airfields and docks to service subs and fleet ships (modeled in part after the floating airport in Hong Kong except able to move at a slow speed) perhaps even work in so oil rig and processing hardware. Would act like a forward base avoiding the need to island hop like we did in WWII.
@wms-h2v
@wms-h2v 2 ай бұрын
So the concept of a vessel like that was examined, however, it was decided that having a swiss army knife ship would put too many eggs in one basket. If the ship was hit or taken out of action it would significantly reduce the ability of the fleet it was tasked to. That combined with the high operational cost of all the systems in one ship, its hard to keep running. Plus, overall its more efficient for vessels to specialize in their roles in modern combat. Its why you have carriers and amphibious assault ships separated into two different ships and not a single platform. Would it be crazy cool? Heck yes! But sadly due to the nature of war a ship of that nature will never be built unless some nation has a ton of extra cash to burn.

@@wms-h2v Part of the concept is to avoid having a bunch of eggs without even a basket to protect them. The NAVY is killing the specialist ships now because every current class has revealed to be a bunch of fragile eggs without the ability to slug it out. They shoot their load and are useless after. To save money after the cost wasted on ships that required to only face the expected battlefield they are converting merchant ships for many roles and likewise buying back Fighters in masses that they planned to retire but the replacements are 2/3s unable to fly a mission (half of that unable to fly due to filings in the tanks.) The carrier remains the heart of the Navy but all the secondary roles haven't had a worthy upgrade since Vietnam The only US Navy ship left in service that has killed any enemy ship has wood sides and wind power. The last retired ship with such a kill got it in Vietnam, The last time the Navy sank anyone in battle was Iran under Reagan and that goes to A6 pilots from the now being broken Enterprise. The Navy is already spread too thin to do the peace time jobs. While the modern Battleship I propose would have limits, the flexibility with 4 to 6 it would be a force multiplier that could stay at sea for 2 to 4 year tours with a crew with modern equipment reduced to that of a WWII destroyer. The guns could all be ran by one to three guys locally vs. the old 30+ for a single main turret on old battleships. The ship would be far less of an egg shell with reserve buoyancy and reduced explosive mags (Just missiles and 5" or smaller rounds) and in the case of the missile boxes they blow out not through the ship if they go. The smaller stuff we use today also have major range limits that mirror issues we faced in WWII with the Japs. Also a reason the new cruisers/frigates failed is they cannot serve forward well even on peace time patrol because even with reduced crews they lacked the fuel and supply capacity (in essence only useful in a coastal roll at home)

I respectfully disagree that the Navy is abandoning the specialization idea. The fleet just ordered new frigates and is expected to order more A-Bs as well. If they were abandoning the idea they would not expand upon it. If you are referring to the LCS ships, they were discarded due to poor construction and quality, the frigates ordered are to replace them. Additionally, I disagree on the claim that ships have not been upgraded other then carriers. Our destroyers far outshine their older counterparts and systems like the Tomahawk and CWIS have been updated into modern iterations to support the ships. Is the navy spread thin, yes, but being spread thin and being combat incapable are two different things. We have ships off of China and Yemen proving that now. Once again, the issue with the Battleship is not the manpower or firepower, its the cost, upkeep, and concentration of resources. A vessel of this sort would sap resources from the Navy for other projects and likely result in the cancellation of a carrier type ship which in the modern era is unacceptable as a carrier would be more flexible then a battleship due to range issues. So, while I like the design and details for the ship, its use in modern combat is not practical based on the amount of tech and resources packed into it.
