Last season (2022) I sowed my sweet peas outside in makeshift water bottle terrariums. I cut individual bottles in half, which we already had put aside to recycle. I poked a few holes in the bottom, filled the bottom half with potting soil, placed two seeds in each bottle, watered them well, put the top half back on with wide tape I got from the dollar store and left the cap off. I kept them right where they would be planted come spring. I watered into the bottles a bit whenever they looked excessively dry. I had a 100% success rate with over 140 plants. I just cut bottles open and planted the plugs in April. It worked great. I'm going to do it again this season. My water bottle terrariums were sloppy and poorly sealed, but it still protected the seeds well enough for them to grow long roots. I tossed the bottles in with my other plastic trash once I planted out my seedlings. I lost my .5 cent refunds, but having the extra space inside for other seeds to grow was invaluable. I tried to use the same method with yarrow, but it didn't work. Whereas I had 100% success with the sweet peas, I had 100% failure with my yarrow. Thank you for your video! I'm also in zone 6b (hudson valley NY.) I'm very much a novice with lots to learn. I'm grateful you shared your experience.

Haven’t tried direct sowing that one. I’ll add it to my list.

I made all those same mistakes. Regarding powdery mildew, that’s just not preventable. You just gotta succession plant and pull out the zinnias when they get powdery mildew.

I have a love/hate relationship with zinnias!

What % do you typically find successful? I’m in 6a and wanting to make a fence line with them. I don’t want to go sprinkle 100 seeds and end up with 100 plants. lol. I mean…. I **dooo** want 100 but idt my neighbors would appreciate it. 😂😂 Also, I assume that it’s too late to sprinkle them into the yard now (late August)?? I was hoping to do that and then let nature do its thing. I can’t help but think they’d grow, even though winters are insane here, because if the birds/squirrels start eating them…. They sporadically grow in that area unexpectedly. Hmmm, I see an experiment coming on. Lol

Just learning about lisianthus --love watching this and the detail about the roots growing down! Wow--4-5 weeks from last frost? So planting is VERY early! At the end you mention its 30 degrees. So these babies survive that! Crazy! You said they "don't like to get wet" and you covered them. But are they more rain tolerant as older plants? They obviously have to have SOME water. We are in NW Oregon and it is dry all summer but spring we have LOTS of rain.

HOw did your lisies end up producing last yr - were these seedlings pre-treated with Root Shield, or do you not find fusarium an issue in your area with these flowers?

Hello… I’m new to flower growing and just starting out. I’ve purchase both the 3/4” & 2”… My first seedling are snapdragons, sweet peas and Lisianthus.. And I found that 2” blocks work well. I’m a little heavy handed and moving them or transplanting they don’t fall apart on me. I get great ROOT development ✅ I was going to use the 3/4” and then when the seed root develop transfer to the larger box but it fell apart on me, So I just stayed with the 2”…

This year definitely hasn't been ideal. I'm making more money off of my pressed flower items than I am from fresh flowers. Pressing the flowers is more work but I can make frames and bookmarks over the winter to have a decent inventory for next year. I can also try selling them online. Thus isn't what I expected my flower farm experience to be but you have to go with the flow I guess. Good luck with the rest of your season!

Thank you so much for sharing that information, I had never known that about that type of cancer. Hopefully your garden will bring you some peace. My dad passed away in 2018, I was 63. I remember thinking how lucky I was to have him in my life that long. My husband's father passed when he was 31. He knew my father longer than he'd known his own. No matter when the loss comes, healing happens at its own pace. Thank you for sharing. For me, my dad is another angel in heaven I know by name. So sorry for your loss. A side note: I watch a youtuber who talks about some kind of hornworm that you can rarely see during the day but if you take a black light out at night they glow in the dark. She says they can decimate a plant in no time at all. Don't know if that's your problem, but the black specs (posssible feces) on the leaves I think is another tell tale sign. And they do attack tomato plants.
