What a depressing video. The division of Christians is a huge scandal, and is quite contrary to the teachings of Jesus. I am ever more committed to following Jesus and the Way, and ever more unhappy with institutional Christianity. The divisions are a major deterrent to non-believers joining. I suppose that we should be glad that we are no longer burning one another.

@@adrianthomas1473 when were “we” burning each other? I’m not aware of Orthodox Church ever burning anyone. That doesn’t really show up until the Protestant reformation and principally only for a few centuries between Protestant sects and sometimes with Catholics as well. The video should be encouraging if you truly follow Jesus. Jesus said He would build His church upon the rock and hell would not prevail against it. If that church which the Aposltes carried on through appointing Bishops and passing in through the physical laying on of hands fell, as Protestants claim, then Jesus was a false prophet. So if you truly follow Jesus as you claim, then it should be good news to near His church still stands as a light in the darkness. The honor is yours to unite yourself to his church.

Fr Josiah Trenham just published a video on roughly the same topic, about the attemp to begin unifying the jurisdictions in 1994. Its a good way to fill out some of the context. Yet I would argue its not a problem with The Church, its rules or its structure. The failures are on a personal and political level. The tools are all there. The tools are not being used.

I really like how the OCA does it. Services in English, tailored to Americans; missions and dioceses for diaspora with services in their language. But I agree with Fr Stephen on this one, the US is not ready for a single jurisdiction, most of us haven’t been Orthodox for more than 10 years and still have Protestant or other sort of baggage. The Western Rite is a prime example of what could happen. Inconsistent catechism, rapidly changing praxis, too much flirting with heresy. It took the Russians and Bulgarians centuries of being Christians to become autocephalous. The schism between the EP and MP makes it even harder. The only thing that makes sense rn is uniting under an AOC that is under either the MP or the EP, but that ain’t happening any time soon.

The Russian Church conducts an active mission in Asia and Africa. And in Russia itself, there is now an active mission in Tuva. This is a pagan region on the border with Mongolia. By the way, there were also several missionary trips to Mongolia. And the Russian bishops appointed an ethnic Tuvan as a bishop in Tuva and are translating the service into the local language. The chants are done in Greek at my parish & it has Greek flags, Greek dances, Greek food etc. etc. I'm beginning to think it makes very little sense God's universal Church is limited to these little ethnic enclaves and the True Church is largely unknown outside of Eastern Europe. The Orthodox don't really evagelize or do community outreach either. Then there's the issue of every bishop & priest having different rules for their flock. I inquired at a local Russian mission and the catechumen process was quite formal. At the Greek parish there's no formal program whatsoever other than keep showing up and "here's a super basic book to read at home if you want". It just seems chaotic and convoluted.

I get where you’re coming from. I would encourage you, however, to look at it like this: When the gospel came to the Greeks, they were being introduced to what was largely a “Jewish faith”, with principles foreign to their culture. In short time though, the faith was incorporated culturally, and the Greek traditions as they exist today came about. Same with the Russian, and Balkan patriarchates. They were evangelized by the Greek missionaries, who helped them to make their own churches culturally unique. Due to Western Europes proximity to the new world, and not being landlocked, the post schism western church was able to evangelize the new world. The western liturgy was certainly foreign to the natives, and virtually no effort was made to integrate their cultures so they may connect deeper with the faith. Because of this, the missions to the new world were not very successful. On top of this, virtually all natives were killed from disease, and the Latinos that exist today are the result of white Europeans marrying natives. The new world is not an evangelistic success story, and most of Latin america is irreligious and in shambles. All this to say, yea it lowkey sucks that on one hand, we as mostly Anglo-Saxon Americans have to attend churches that are largely of different culture. I attend a western rite church, and I believe it’s very important for the western rite to grow in the US, but only by solving these admin issues is that going to be possible.

Same situation for my conversion 5 years ago. Not being Greek I think helped me with my humility. We SHOULD have the mindset of a foreigner assimilating when entering orthodoxy. I don’t mean the Greek stuff is actually important, but it can help foster the right mindset. I would suggest taking a pilgrimage to an Orthodox Monastery and making a connection there. The Fathers there will give you the correct advice for reception into the Church. My spiritual Father is at St Anthony’s in AZ, and it is a great place to visit for a few days.

I'm a new convert (almost 3 years ago) at a Greek church and I hear and agree with most of what you're saying. I am Hispanic and was welcomed in like family. Our church is actually mostly Greek but there's a good mix of whites, blacks and a few Russians. I took the mindset that this was their church and should not change for me and I've embraced Greek culture along the way. The service is about 50/50 in Greek and English and I've picked up some Greek in the process. They are mindful to make the service accessible to all and the church has seen a surge of converts. On the other hand, there are a few cliques there among the younger crowd where I don't get the time of day even if I say hi or whatever. In spite of the challenges, keep going, it's the practice of the faith and the worship of the Holy Trinity that unites us.

Your major problem is that historically different Orthodox Churches have had different ways of dealing with Roman Catholic converts. That means that I can point to any Catholic saint, Saint Anselm for example, and say the Orthodox do not agree among themselves on whether or not he was validly baptised, so their judgement on his sainthood can be taken with a pinch of salt. Even if you eventually get your act together, you still have the historical legacy. As a Roman Catholic we have similar issues. The eastern rite Catholics have their own bishop which overlaps with the Latin rite bishop. @forehead949Ай бұрын
The laity can’t do much about it. Probably best that everyone just goes to the closest parish to their home as long as it is in a common communion with their prospective faiths whether Catholic or Orthodox.

@@forehead949 The RC Church essentially has one Bishop with all other Bishops being subordinate to him and his authority. So, in this way it’s less of an issue to have overlapping Bishops for your church. Does that work the same for TLM parishes under Bishops that are more NO Bishops?
@forehead949Ай бұрын
@ ok I didn’t know they are subordinate to the Latin rite bishop. Id bet that there are rarely issues with the two “jurisdictions” because they seem to stay in their prospective lanes so it’s probably more of an honorific. I know the non Latin rites in my communion select their own bishops and is then basically “pencil whipped” approved by the pope as more of a formality (vs in Latin rite where the pope selects the bishops). I go to an FSSP TLM parish in the diocese of Sacramento, ca and our priests answer to the RC bishop of Sacramento just like any Latin rite parish. The FSSP and other Latin rite organizations answer to local bishop just like any other non diocesan religious orders in RCC, but a unique thing about FSSP and ICKSP and other orders with a primary TLM purpose are that they are also overseen directly by Bishop of Rome because it was initially the Pope who gave these religious orders faculties to celebrate TLM after the Novus Ordo became the new rite. These orders are under what we call the Ecclesia Dei Commission which Pope JP2 established to facilitate these traditionalist groups to keep celebrating the traditional liturgy. The SSPX is unique because while they are a TLM order, their founder who was a bishop consecrated 4 bishops without romes permission and have since had a patchy relationship with Rome and some people even question their communion with Rome or their canonical status. The SSPX often times have permission from their local bishop depending on the diocese. Some bishops would see them as schismatic however. They pray for pope and local bishop in their liturgies though just fyi.
@joachimjustinmorgan4851Ай бұрын
@ no, I just mean they’re subordinate to the Pope. Like in Orthodoxy one Bishop might have greater authority than another, but the Bishop of Athens is not under (subordinate to) another Bishop like Constantinople or Moscow. Where as in the Catholic Church the Pope has immediate jurisdiction in every church according to Vatican 1. There is nothing like that in the Orthodox Church. So if there are multiple overlapping bishops in Catholicism, it’s not an ecclesiastical issue because they’re both still just subordinates of the Pope. In Orthodoxy, a Bishop is equal to all other Bishops. One might have a larger see. And in areas of dispute they can appeal to a Bishop or Patriarchate with more authority like a metropolis, but they still aren’t subordinate to that Metropolitan Bishop, it’s just a chain for them to appeal up to in areas of dispute. Rome functioned as the top of this chain in the first millennia. Where we came into disagreement was that, we would argue, Rome came to see their bishop, not just as the top of a chain of authority to appeal to a dispute rather, as a head bishop which all other bishop should be subordinate to. This concept is foreign orthodoxy and the Church of the first millennia.
@forehead949Ай бұрын
@ I gotcha. While the eastern rite Catholics are under the pope, the pope isnt heavy handed or micromanaging of the other rites. Unfortunately for the pope is more heavy handed when it comes to the Roman rite which does make trad cats like me a bit uncomfortable when it comes to a liberal pope. The eastern rite Catholics really aren’t worried about the pope messing with them(at least recently) in the same way that Latin rite Catholics worry. As far as eastern rite Catholic and Latin rite Catholic bishops having a dispute they would have the pope to be able to definitively settle them. Similar to how a patriarch in the Orthodox Church would help settle disputes between bishops. I’m not saying that we are the same or trying to make a false equivalency but rather that there are some similarities in both how jurisdictions overlap and how disputes are settled in both catholic and orthodox churches. I really appreciate the video and dialogue. I’ve learned some things.

New Covenant Whole Gospel: How many modern Christians cannot honestly answer the questions below? Who is the King of Israel in John 1:49? Is the King of Israel now the Head of the Church, and are we His Body? Who is the “son” that is the “heir” to the land in Matthew 21:37-43? Why did God allow the Romans to destroy the Old Covenant temple and the Old Covenant city, about 40 years after His Son fulfilled the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34 in blood at Calvary? What the modern Church needs is a New Covenant Revival (Heb. 9:10) in which members of various denominations are willing to re-examine everything they believe and see if it agrees with the Bible, instead of the traditions of men. We need to be like the Bereans. It will be a battle between our flesh and the Holy Spirit. It will not be easy. If you get mad and upset when someone challenges your man-made Bible doctrines, that is your flesh resisting the truth found in God's Word. Nobody can completely understand the Bible unless they understand the relationship between the Old Covenant given to Moses at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary. God is not now a “racist”. He has extended His love to all races of people through the New Covenant fulfilled by His Son’s blood at Calvary. The Apostle Paul warned against using “genealogies” in our faith in 1 Tim. 1:4, and Titus 3:9. If the New Covenant is "everlasting" in Hebrews 13:20 and the Old Covenant is "obsolete" in Hebrews 8:13, why would any Christian believe God is going back to the Old Covenant system during a future time period? The following verses prove the Holy Spirit is the master teacher for those now in the New Covenant. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
