My heart goes to you 100% and i know that feeling, trust me. I lost my mom to cancer last year November. My dad is still alive thank God but very empty. You are indeed very gracious! You say there is no emphasis on family meal time in Norway but I came to find that there is no emphasis on family "anything" in Nordic countries. It's said that they are modern societies but I found them to be overly reserved and awkward. They raise children that grow up to be detached from their families and very much introverted.

Besides a feeling of pride, as the bunad normally shows where in Norway you’re from, as each place has it’s own variant, and it is an unsaid rule that you should only wear a bunad from the place you’re from/grew up, or your ancestors are from. But nowdays, it’s not as strict. It’s also a status symbol as it’s really expensive to have it made. Many kids gets a bunad as a Christening gift if «kristelig konfirmasjon». When I grew up back in the 90’s and 2000’s bunad was out, and most kids wanted everyday clothes, but high end street brands, to wear during the 17th of May lol. Now more and more people want a bunad, which is great. Tho the bunad is self is taken from the many traditional garments that the commoners used to wear, especially out on the country side as farmers. So the bunad is quite new, as it was this woman who traveled around in Norway sourcing the different styles locally before turning them into a distinctive style for each state/county.
