As an 11-year old black kid in the good ole state of Mississippi in 1974, the remnants of the Civil Rights era still reverberated at the time. However, I found solace and comfort in the only ubiquitous element known to man, and that was music. My musical palette was very unique because I listened to every genre that there was at that time. A lot of people didn't understand that I didn't see race as a big deal when it came to music. When I first heard this classic from Joni Mitchell, fellll in love with it immediately. Music is universal to me and I find it to be very therapeutic, regardless of one's race. This is one the best songs that I have ever heard.

This album and the next "Blue" are the best that Joni Mitchell has recorded, a peak of certainly the best period of her life and also the happiest.

This is lauded by most but really fails to get anywhere or cohere. The whole Hejira album was interesting in concept but having to make room for the bass to show off (and not support) while trying a narrative in imitation of Lambert, Hendrix and Ross prevented Joni Mitchell from being her usual, highly creative, self. Luckily that phase did not last too long and Turbulent Indigo confirmed the genuine musical importance of the great Canadian musician.

My Mum died in late December. Once the Christmas lights go up, this song starts playing in my head. Most of my age group don't have experience with acute grief, and it's impossible to explain without killing the mood. I haven't seen her face in 4 years. I wish I had a river...

Sublime, deeply moving and timeless. I first heard this searingly beautiful song when I was 18 (nearly half a century ago) in the company of a beautiful but deeply wounded, suffering and saddened girl who was pouring her heart out to me about what a vile man had done to her. Whenever I hear this song, I'm immediately transported back to that moment as if no time had passed. Part of me froze there, in a winter of pain and torn innocence. There was no river on which she could flee. For the first -- but not the last -- time, I was ashamed to be a man.

How utterly ironic that Joni Mitchell, perhaps the greatest songwriter that ever lived -- as evidenced by this song alone -- didn't even consider herself primarily to be a musician, but, rather, a painter. I love how this video captures both sides now. (Pun intended.)

I knew a woman who sounded exactly like Joni Mitchell. She was visiting from California, and sang as we sat around a campfire at Lake Clearwater in New Zealand - I was mesmerized. I later had an all too brief relationship with her, but let her go one fateful night in December 1991. It's a decision I regret to this day, and my heart breaks a little every time I hear a Loni Mitchell song.
