A symbol of Mitchell's endearing and enduring musical restlessness - never content to deliver the hit as is, to 'give 'em what they want' but rather 'show them what I think they need'. 'Woodstock' isn't one of my favourite Mitchell songs (that might simply be a personal prejudice based on the cliché that concert has become), but here she gives it a suave swank, reading the song its own riot act - "You're mine, baby...since I wrote you I can bend you, shape you any way I want to." For my money, the best cover of this song out there (other than those by Ms. Mitchell herself) is that by her countrymen Smyle from late 1970/early '71.
