You're listening to the 2021 remaster for Joni Mitchell - "Both Sides Now" originally from the album 'Clouds.' THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971) will be available on June 25 in 4-CD and 4-LP 180-gram vinyl versions, as well as digitally. Pre-order the CD or LP from JoniMitchell.com to receive an exclusive, limited edition 7” x 7” print of a self-portrait by Joni Mitchell: JM.lnk.to/TRA6871ID.
Joni Mitchell released Blue, concluding her prolific four album run for Reprise Records with an album considered by many to be one of the greatest of all time. Its stirring, confessional songs have been celebrated by music lovers and critics alike for decades while inspiring a wide variety of artists as diverse as Prince and Taylor Swift. Even today, its stature as a masterpiece continues to grow. Just last year, the album was named #3 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”
To celebrate the album’s 50th anniversary, Rhino is releasing THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971), the next installment of the Joni Mitchell Archives series, featuring newly remastered versions of Blue (1971) and the three albums that came before it: Song To A Seagull (1968), Clouds (1969), and Ladies Of The Canyon (1970). In the case of Song To A Seagull, the original mix has been recently updated by Mitchell and mixer Matt Lee.
The cover art for THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971) features a previously unseen self-portrait Mitchell sketched during the time period. The collection also includes an essay by Grammy winning singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, another artist who’s been influenced greatly by Mitchell.

First verse on 'clouds' was just a warmup... things get deep in a hurry. "But now old friends are acting strange. They shake their heads, they say I've changed. Well something's lost but something's gained in living every day..." Imagine already being this wise in her early 20's when she wrote this masterpiece.

When I saw my grandparents years ago when I first heard this song over 50 years ago, I saw only one side of life but now that I am older, I see and know both sides and realize I really don’t know life at all. I just want to learn more and maybe we’ll all see what this life is about fully when we move on to the next life…Thank you Joni for a remarkable stories life you’ve lived and shared with us. Rows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere Looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun They rain and they snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down and still somehow It's cloud's illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels The dizzy dancing way that you feel As every fairy tale comes real I've looked at love that way But now it's just another show And you leave 'em laughing when you go And if you care, don't let them know Don't give yourself away I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take and still somehow It's love's illusions that I recall I really don't know love Really don't know love at all Tears and fears and feeling proud To say, "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way Oh, but now old friends they're acting strange And they shake their heads, they tell me that I've changed Well something's lost, but something's gained In living every day I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all It's life's illusions that I recall I really don't know life I really don't know life at all

Stunning song. Joni is a true legend. One of the purist forces of singer songwriting in this last 6 decades. She was performing about the same year I was born in 1971. Her music reflects a much simpler time, where everything seemed possible. When I listen to it, I may as well be stepping into a time machine. Thanks for the time machine Joni.

I used to listen to this album when I was young and it was before my time. I was born in 78 and even when I was 12 listening, I felt like I had already lived and experienced life while not knowing anything at the time. I still have that same feeling at 53 listening to it

I first got to know this song when I was only 19 with the movie love actually. I knew of Joni, but wasn't as familiar with her catalogue. That famous scene in the movie made me a dedicated fan. Let me tell you that I literally woke up my husband from sitting on the edge of the bed sobbing, enraptured by this performance and seeing Brandi Carlisle play with her idol. It was truly a beautiful moment
