I love this video. It’s the first time I’ve seen your work and what I really like is that you don’t waffle on! Everything you say is relevant, concise and to the point. Also, when it gets repetitive (eg painting the bricks) I like the way you fast forward. The finished painting is beautiful and I feel as though I’ve learnt a great deal about painting with pen and watercolour together. Thank you, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing more of your tutorials.

Hi, Thanks so much for your very positive comments. I try not to waffle but I have been told before to "get on with it"! Perhaps you are very patient! I always cover what I consider to be the most important points so that viewers can truly understand what I'm up to. I am going to try to do more tutorials in the near future so make sure you subscribe so that you receive notification as they are published. Best wishes, Steve

Really lovely and interesting tutorial. May i ask at what degree your board is, please? I usually have the board at 20% 😊
@stephencoates81652 ай бұрын
Many thanks for your comments. My board is set at around 15 degrees which is just right for me. Generally watercolour artists paint on a gentle slope which can vary anywhere between 10 and 45 degrees. It's just a case of how much water artists use. There are some watercolour paintings which don't require any downward movement of the paint at all, in which case the artist will paint flat. These tend to be subjects like wildlife or flowers. I hope that helps! I use a pair of desk stands to hold my board which are available on my website www.coatesart.co.uk. Take a look if this is of interest. Best wishes, Steve

@ thank you so much for the information. I shall be looking at your website for some more material. I follow Lois Davidson’s tutorials as well as Christian Koivumaa and Karen Rice. I really like Ron Ranson and whenever i have time I work to try and achieve his style (more or less). Very glad to have found you!!!

Lovely painting sorry what type of pen should I use for line painting pls
@stephencoates81655 ай бұрын
Hi Colin, The pens are Unipin fine liners. 100% guaranteed not run when the paint is added. Be careful because other brands of pens state that they are waterproof or water resistant. I always advise that you test the pens first. With Unipin you won't have to. Best wishes Steve

don't you think the shadow under the boat is a bit too strong, mate?
@stephencoates81656 ай бұрын
Hi there, Thanks for your question. Firstly I assume you mean reflections not shadows. The two are quite different. I've studied reflections and written a book on the subject and you can actually represent reflections in many different ways. They can be softer than the subject or a similar tone dependant on the conditions. So in answer to your question, in my view they are not too strong. Best wishes, Steve
@kyawgyi639486 ай бұрын
hello sir what dark color did you used?
@stephencoates81656 ай бұрын
Hello, the dark colour is a strong mix of ultramarine and light red. Hope that helps Steve

I like this video. I started watercolor a few months ago, and have a set of cheap hake brushes. I find them unique and fascinating to use. I am very much in the early stage of using them.
@Seawa56 ай бұрын
what color paint did you use for the plum? Did you mix it, or is it straight out of the tube?
@stephencoates81656 ай бұрын
Hi there, The plum colour is a mix of ultramarine and light red. Striaght from the tube with a little water added to allow mixing. The light red is strong so be careful not to add too much. The resulting mix should be quite thick like oil. If it is too wet it will disperse too quickly on the previouisly wet paper. Keep working with the hake brushes, they are amazing! Best wishes, Steve

Every time I use my Hake brushes, I have to pick the fibres off of my work. They shed!
@stephencoates81658 ай бұрын
Hi There, traditional hakes do not last forever. The clamped and stiched brush head will deteriorate and shed hairs. Occasionally you get a "rouge" brush and it's just a case of replacing it. They do differ of course from one brand to another so obviously I am going to recommend the Proarte range. Either the Ron Ranson or my own signanure version which is exactly the same. One more thing, It is always worth pulling any stray hairs out of the brush head before using it. Hope that helps! Steve
