Thanks for sharing Andy. Do you find the water soluble oils OK to work with? How long do they take to dry? Thanks
@AndyWalkerArt14 күн бұрын
I really love the water mixable oils and find them a joy to work with. They don't smell so working at home is ok, they don't need nasty chemicals or solvents, and they clean up with just water and a bit of soap. I use Cobra paints that I find have a much better consistency straight from the tube ( I've tried Artesan paints from w&n before but they are too sticky and need a medium to thin them down). I'm writing an online course on using water mixable oils in landscape painting. Follow me on my blog at andywalkerart.com for more news about this.

@@AndyWalkerArt thanks Andy. Do you exclusively use water based oils now? Never traditional oils?

@@stevenice8320 yes, only water mixable oils and only the Cobra make.

That gave me ideas if I want to take my oil paints on a car trip. You can also store the upright stack of canvases into a plastic box. I would not take oil paints in an airplane, as in European Airlines oil paints are banned. The regulations don't make any difference between housepaint and artists paints. I would take acrylics instead.
@AndyWalkerArt16 күн бұрын
@@Elvraie I've never encountered a problem taking water-mixable oils on planes in Europe before (I guess there is always a first time!). I take them in carry-on luggage in a clear plastic bag and put them along with my toiletries in the x-ray tray. The tubes I take are only 40ml each, so maybe that is OK.

I see all the artists here on youtube, working in a flow with wet colours. Mine just blend together to a blob!
@AndyWalkerArt22 күн бұрын
Hi. That may be because the paint is too watery and so moves around too much, or because you are mixing it too much with the brush (just allow the colours to touch and blend where they meet). Try putting down less paint so that there are not large puddles on the paper. Hope that helps 😊

They serve as a sort of "clamp" for putting the palette on your leg. How well that works will come down to the thickness of your leg, I suppose. I don't think this was designed with the intention of being used while standing, though it obviously can be.

It looks like a nice setup. My only question is- how does it work if you want to paint both pages during a session? Does the small board provide enough stability for both pages?
@AndyWalkerArt2 ай бұрын
Yes It does. The board crosses the fold between the pages equally on both sides, so they are held equally firmly, and if you use the elastic strap that often comes with a sketchbook on one side and put an elastic band on the other, or a clip, then the pages will stay open and fixed. Have fun!

A great video, Andy. Thanks for posting - Both my wife and have have a 'Portable Painter Palette', it's a great urban sketcher's tool. I'd love to see a larger version with 18 colour sections or / and, the 12 with three double sections added, as it is, I half fill the four small wells and the middle double well along side the brush holder with paint also, mainly to allow me to mixed more greys and greens, on longer trips. Warning: and I have raised this point with the manufacturer, the grooves for sliding in the two black water tubs are weak points. Twice my box has fallen about 18-24 inches, once off my knee and once off a small seat and both water tubs snapped off at the groove. I've re-enforce those points with aluminium squares cut from a coke can, superglued and hot-glued all round. You do need to keep any added support thin so the two water tubs still slide on when not using. Happy painting.

Thanks for your comments. You can get additional smaller paint containers from the manufacturers that will increase the number of colours you can put in. See my blogpost andywalkerart.com/2023/11/10/how-to-get-more-colours-in-your-palette/

Why not overlap the palette a bit and clip it on as well, so there is no chance of the watercolors and water coming off?
@AndyWalkerArt5 ай бұрын
That's a good idea if you are concerned about the palette sliding off, but I've never had a problem with it as it is. The fit is quite tight enough so friction does the job.
