Personally I think vim got it right in the order they chose. Mostly because of what you mentioned. We think/say delete word. That's what comes naturally I use vim without thinking really it just comes naturally. I think that's why people love it as much as they do. It just makes sense. There are a lot of other reasons I think vim, and particularly neovim are the better options. Like more extensibility, more options out of the box on how to edit, and the keybindings being found more commonly outside of vim. Obviously this is all just what I think. Everyone is free to use, and find useful what they like. I personally like having the commands in the order vim has them, having a separate visual mode. I think the only time wasted in the way vim does things, is unironically a skill issue. Which just gets better with time, understanding what the key binds do. Like dw, I use that all the time, because I like deleting from where I am to the end of the word. And I know what it will do from use. Or in the same place I can do diw and delete the whole word. Really there is more I could say but this is already too long.

Good Luck mate. I am on mid 30's also 5 years on linux and now changing career too. I was an electrician engineer now switching to web dev. As for distros i disagree. They are different for a reason. Void is ranked #1 on distrowatch for a reason. Security, speed, simplicity are reasons to avoid the one over the other distribution. SystemD is a crucial reason too. I also happen to use openbsd and trying tribblix too. Give them a shot although they are not linux based.

I completely agree with don't use Windows as s fall back. It wasn't until i ditched windows for about 3 weeks that I didn't want to use it again. I don't completely sgree with you on distros. It's not things that you want to add but things you don't want. For example, systemd. If you don't want that, you are really limited to which distros you choose.
@JakeLinux

@@JeffreyJibsonI hear ya but most new users who are just trying to familiarize themselves with Linux aren't usually worried about init systems, bloat, or all that, most of them.are just trying to get a feel.for how to use Linux. Once they are comfortable with using Linux and start moving on to all the tweaking,.at that point the init system and other things come into play. Thanks for your thoughts and input, I appreciate it.

So many good points. I found your channel when I started my journey. I tried a ton of distros, even ran Void for a while and it was close but didn't jive with me. This is where i disagree a little, I landed on Alpine and it just makes sense to me. Alpine does not translate to other linux distros as well, no GNU make a huge difference in the tools you use. My wife is a dev and uses Mint, she asks me for help now and then and I have to dig through documentation for stuff I can just do in Alpine without thinking. Not all distros are the same but you can get them to do what you want.

I like this channel. I found a lot of useful things. One thing which I still didn't get is with clear understanding is: After installed Void Linux with hyperland from previous video on Thinkpad T14s Gen4 (amd). Firefox download files as *.part extenstion and with Intellij I can't use drug and drop. Looks like i missed something. Chat GPT and googling didn't help. Maybe someone faced with the same issues. That behaviour repeats for all downloads from any of files just for firefox. To avoid that problem each time I copy link on file and download with wget. Problem repeats with firefox only. I asume that problem somehow related with env variable(s) in hyperland.conf file.

Drug and Drop is awesome ;-) I had issues with hyprland because of missing portals, wayland needs those to properly function. Maybe also something else, hard to tell as there are so many things that are unclear from your description... The Firefox issue sounds weird, maybe find someone locally to help you? How did you install Firefox, as Flatpak or as native packet? It could be some permission problem or another issue because of the missing portal

For the first time distro it literally doesn’t matter. The only thing I’d recommend is that it has an easy, well documented install process. Then give it a go and then try a heap on VMs

I'm new to Linux, but Id just like to say the answer is Mint, You don't have to love computers to understand the basic functions its basically windows, If you want to grow, it has a terminal just like any other distro. The real thing a new user need understand all distro's are not identical and it's important to search for information concerning your family of distro's; Keywords for mint are Ubuntu, Debian, or just mint. On the hardware end go buy yourself a cheap mini PC, a 720p monitor, cheap Keyboard and mouse this will cost approx. $300. the mini PC's companies seem to have Linux in mind when the configure their systems. My geekom sensed the WiFi right away which is a very common first problem. finally documentation, I'm not sure because I am still piecing things together on you tube and forums which are mostly (read the documentation statements.) but based on my encounters with most Linux wizards it was probably written by someone on the spectrum and using English has a second language. Good luck with your journey and Remember the world is a better place with you in it. (You might want to repeat that statement often while trying to figure this s*&t out.)

You're 100% right that there is no perfect distro. I think the closest to a perfect distro is the one you install that has close to everything you need with the least amount of effort to do so and is stable. By stable I mean doesn't tend to break with every update. This could be a LTS version or a rolling or semi rolling release. It really depends on your use case. Personally I'll advocate for dual boot or at least have a backup OS. I also think that by installing only Linux on a machine (any machine) and trying to work your way through the problems as you come across them you'll leant more than just reverting back to Windows or Mac. But you also have the advantage that if there's something you can't fix straight away, you can still get your work done on another machine using your old OS. I still use both because there's certain apps that are Windows only and the Linux equivalent app sucks. It doesn't have to be one or the other. But my Windows use has declined steeply.

Thanks for sharing, I agree, like I said in the video I know there are instances where dual boot is handy or necessary but if possible I think total immersion is a good way to learn and retain.

it's this line of thinking why most people who try linux give up and go back to windows after a day or less than a week. if you make it hard out the gate for them they are less likely to stick with it. I tried your suggestion and others to try arch. I crashed every arch distro in a few hours to almost a month. debian was stable but didn't have as much as linux mint had when it came to switching from windows. It's my daily driver I tried all flavors of linux mint before settling on xfce it's easiest to configure and most like windows 7. ubuntu I wasn't a fan of the gnome desktop environment or the limited customization of the system tray panel with the clock. arch has the least amount of support when it comes to learning arch. the arch community is extremely rude. dual boot only works if you have 2 seperate hard drives.
@JakeLinux
@JakeLinux 21 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing, but outside of don't dual boot everything recommended makes the experience easier. 1: know your hardware so you can find a distro that has good support for your hardware 2: pick something that is aesthetically pleasing or comfortable, similar to windows or Mac if it helps you be comfortable 3: read up on the distro and see what packages it has how many, will it have what you need, etc. All suggestions that ease the transition. Unless if you meant that doing research is making it hard, I think these are all good suggestions for an easier switch. But maybe I am not understanding what you are saying, please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts.

I'm not most people, apparently. I tried the various "beginner-friendly" distros, usually dual-booting, in short spurts for years before inevitably getting frustrated and just switching back to Windows. What made me fall in love with Linux was ripping the bandage off, wiping my drive, and installing Arch (with archinstall because I failed installing it manually lol). It was a great way to break those bad Windows habits and learn the basic functioning of a Linux system, and I still use Arch years later. Half-contemplating switching to Gentoo.
