The Heygate and Aylesbury were an absolute dump, Who in their right mind would think of buying property there?

All these people now dead would turn in their grave at the crap that now live in their area. Who are not from the locality let's just say that.

The 60's Elephant and Castle was hideous especially the bright pink shopping centre which has now long gone.

The working class folks have always been astute. They could see the folly of this shopping centre. What they couldn’t predict was them being pushed out and replaced by people who would use it.

Depends what is classed as “affordable” . I spent a lot of time on the Aylesbury which had a similar reputation but I never had any problems.

I always thought the mass movement to The (mainly) S E London/Kent Suburbs took place from The 1970s onwards but here they are talking about everyone moving out in 1962 ! My 3rd Flat in Manchester House was @ 2.41 overlooking the market. Then you could walk in and out. NOW? Grills on some windows and TWO Security systems to get in and no British in that 24 Flat block that was 100% White/British indigenous until 1983 apart from one Irish/Jamaican family.

The area was 100% White British when I was born and lived there other than The Irish Community and the odd restauranteur or Ice Cream Man and my 24 Flat Block was all British. NOW? NO White/British in the Block so from 100% to 0%. I would say that is a pretty significant change:) I moved 40 years ago in 1983 just 11 miles to The Suburbs that were mentioned.

@@andydixon2980 The 2021 London Census shows Whites are already a minority in 10/32 London Boroughs with Tower Hamlets having 70% Asian as the highest and our proportion gets lower every year as we average 2 kids per family while Asian, Muslim, and Black families average 4 kids per family so , after 7 generations we have 2x2x2x2x2x2x2=128 children on average while the other aforementioned groups have 4x4x4x4x4x4x4=16,384 so around 125 times more offspring.....

In London, the value of a property can differ vastly even if identical buildings are on the same street. My cousin's terrace is in Lambeth, and his pal's identical terrace is across the road in Wandsworth and worth a staggering £120,000 more in value. The same can also be for identical properties in the same London Borough, with both properties having different post codes. Such is a problem with properties in North London - especially in areas such as Kilburn and its adjacent West Hamstead. The modern new builds replacing the Aylesbury estate are crappy timber framed dwellings - nothing in comparison to the Hardy steel and concrete structure of the old estate. We are plagued with such timber frame buildings here in Pimlico. Within five years of construction, these buildings are surrounded by scaffolding. Opposite the Blue Cross is a privately built block that is looking drab and is forming cracks on its exterior where the walls between each apartment are so thin that one can hear their neighbours arguing. This building was only completed in 1997! I would give an arm and a leg to be able to live in the Aylesbury. The size of each apartment are massive in comparison to other apartments in and near central London. Inner London Boroughs severely under value their their estates. They are worth a fortune. Middle class families - especially from Hong Kong, Malaysia, and even Kuwait would have no problems purchasing such properties even in their dilapidated state. Part of the Aylesbury could be easily sold off and the proceeds could be used to refurbish the other remaining council owned properties. A Middle - Eastern property consortium would purchase the Aylesbury at the drop of a hat!

I lived on this estate for nearly 6 years... It wasn't actually too bad and I had some good friends and neighbors! Was glad when I was moved though as I was on the 9th floor... Me and my daughter went back a few times to see it, once they started to shut it down for redevelopment

I am sure you're tight but I lived in that 24 Flay block until 1983 right on top of Walworth Road overlooking The Market and never had any problems at all though over those 29 years in my birthplace,I heard of 2 murders including "The Bell" Pub. Then,I knew nothing of The Richardsons from Camberwell.

My town had these same design deck access flats, they became known as alcatraz no one wanted to live there, they only lasted about 20 years shoddy construction led to widespread damp, rain ingress and eventually concrete cancer, built in the late 60s empty by late 80s and demolished in 1990

None of them, in fact most of the properties are empty, they went on sale in Singapore and nobody in Britain was able to buy them, only 79 of the homes were "Affordable" and I'm sure they are no longer affordable. As a result, the country has lost around 1,000 social housing properties on this estate alone. They aren't building enough to replace what they lost. There thousands of people on the waiting list and now they'll have to wait even longer because of rehousing these people

These estates were set up to house the industry workers. Since the Tories busted the unions and moved all those jobs to cheap labour overseas, these estates all over the country have just fallen into depravity. It’s a crime against humanity and a stain on our country’s history.
