Relaxers can be harmful, but so is stress 😩. It's so easy to throw out opinions, but YOU'RE the one going through it. Maybe other options could include a keratin treatment also. Just do what you feel is best for you. You can always grow it back out if you hate it.

I have to say, I hate this 2000s revival so bad. Relaxers, skinny girls... everything being sold as better even if it's not. You can do whatever you want, it's your hair, but I can't help but being upset to see all the black, kinky haired girlies going back to this era. I loved your natural hair content 😢

I do not miss relaxer scalp. It was crusty and gross. All I do is twist or braid my hair every 2-4 weeks. But you do you ❤

I have waist length relaxed hair and I can tell you it is not easy. I had to learn the chemistry behind every product ingredient, find a cosmetologist that would allow me to bring my own products as most of the products in the salons are designed to work for most, and stay consistent with the care. So I have products selected for me by a tricologist and a dermatologist and that is what I use almost religiously. I relax twice a year and wash every 2 weeks. Each wash day is specific to that day, moisture day, protein day, hydrating blend of both. The gist is long hair is possible with relaxers, good diet, exercise and a more than basic understanding of what your hair needs to keep it strong versus whatever is trendy or celebrity driven. Each shampoo /conditioner ingredient has a purpose, find what your hair needs and buy those. You do not have to wrap it at night, I pile it on top and sleep in a bonnet when curly and only wrap when I want it straight. A Caucasian girlfriend had fibroids a few years back and so did a cousin who has never relaxed. I read those reports and "inconclusive" was used in every other statement but if concerned then definitely stay away. I have had smokers tell me that relaxers are poison with a perfectly straight face:) I say do what you want just make an informed decision because you are the only one whose opinion matters. But do not think relaxers are easy, at least not until you learn how to take care of the hair.

DONT DO IT 1. RELAXERS EXPOSE HEALTH RISKS Fibroids, uterine and cervical cancers. Fibroids are more common among black women than any other ethnic group because of cream relaxers and chemicals in synthetic hair. 2. YOU'LL LIKELY REGRET IT I had 4 sister who big chopped a gazillion times after re-relaxing. Everyone always regrets the creamy crack. You might then have to do another big chop and start all over again 3. NATURAL HAIR LOOKS BEST WITH YOUR FEATURES Its literally what naturally grows out your scalp ofcourse it looks best on you! Its magical hair that defies gravity!! 4. THE NATURAL HAIR MOVEMENT STARTED FOR UNCONDITIONAL SELF LOVE...SHRINKAGE AND ALL The OG movement were for black women to cast aside european beauty standards and to love themselves fully and whole heartedly. Love and accept their features as is 5. IS YOUR REASONING FOR RELAXERS PERHAPS EUROCENTRIC? Ask yourself "why do you want to do this"? Is your natural hair not "easy" in your eyes because it objectively is? Or are you comparing it to another kind of hair? Straighter hair. Shine, shrinkage etc are you looking at it objectively are you fullly accepting and loving your hair as it is, as it operates?? 6. THERE ARE BETTER ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS You want ease of scalp access? Mini twists, mini braids esp on blow dried hair is amazing! How about Locs??!! 7. RELAXERS ARE NOT LOW MAINTENANCE ! Having to relax your hair for every bit of new growth. Wash out the cream before it burns your scalp off. Flat iron like crazy to hide new growth. It aint easy AT ALL 7. RELAXERS CAUSE IRREPAREABLE DAMAGE One word. Chemical burns. Chemical burns fry your follicles and the hair wont grow back in the spot. Plus heat and chemical dammage. Thinning etc. It often times looks weak and flat 8. NO VOLUME Think about it. You'll no longer have Big hair 9. WITH RELAXERS, YOUR HAIR BECOMES LESS REMARKABLE History tells us black women were conditioned to hate their hair in slavery. On the motherland they wore amazing unique hairstyles and loved their hair. Then they were stolen, their heads shaven for cultural erasure and they were tortured and forced into unpaid labour. As their hair grew they took care of it with what they had and they looked lovely! They colonizers were threatened by this, their beauty, their elegance, its remarkability! They wanted strip the term beauty from black women and drill into their minds that such a word could only belong to european women. So they passed a law mandating them to cover their hair with scarves. So many covered their hair. But they got creative with the scarves and still looked beautiful and elegant. The hair hatred that plagues black women across the diaspora originated because colonizers were threatened by our ancestor's beauty. The thing is our hair is like none other. Ever see videos of black girls travelling with fros? Everyone is in awe, gasping, gobsmacked. Its so unique, mysterious, alluring. Its literally magic and it makes someone so interesting. Its a conversation starter, its a compliment magnet. The rest of population mostly has straight hair. Even other black women wear straight wigs or still get it straightened or relaxed making natural hair...all the more elusive. You'll blend more into the crowd with straight hair because you would no longer have your regal crown

Speaking to people treating you differently. I had a coworker, who really wanted to be friends, at most Instagram posts, but I stopped slowly and then moved away and even thought about her less. She came in one time and said, "Aww, I thought you were gonna get your hair done," ...I just said ahah nope. I don't have money right now lol. But I was put off and thought about it for a while. I don't need friends thay badly. I only will accept people who want to be around me genuinely and whole heartedly. My hair shouldn't be a thing to anyone but me.

Bro i absolutely love you to piece's, but I did notice that you go too hard on your own self anytime but not in this phase but I'd say like earlier in your hair Journey you were so hard on yourself but it was relatable because we're all really hard on ourselves with all take our hair super seriously but it's like you never gave yourself credit like at some point and even to the point of how fast you wanted to wash out your mask and stuff in your hair like you never just put it in hair oil and left your hair braided, but I know as like hair gurus and influencers and especially with Cosmetology in America all races are together so we almost do the same thing but it's like to put a mask on your hair for like 2 hours and wash it out our hair is a different texture you know the Caucasian people like Caucasian people rinse stuff out their hair all the time because it's too thick to be in their hair but with our hair it's easy like with Chevy or henna like you can put a little bit of that in oil and always happen your hair and wash it out like a week later

Lip Glosses words stuck with me. I started to do that when I take my twisties out after three months too! I try not to blow it out because my hair cries when I do and so I only do it the one time when I'm get my twists redone. I also like colors, so I'm aqua-green right now! I was pink before, black with pink "bangs" fourth quarter 2023. I LOVE colors and I had locs from 5-22years old, i bleached and dyed my locs in failed attemps to reach pretty colors, but the only color, my least favorite color, red, was the only color that was super strong. I reached purple pretty nicely once but it was damaging. I'm on a new journey now and I love my fro! I too am growing it out to its fullest potential! I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting a super fro! Not everyone wants one, I don't like the shape of my head, I can not be bald. I did have to develope some confidence when I wore my fro out post cut. I'd put it in little puffs at the front and left the back out. But now I don't even bother. Just moisture, tease and go. I try to manipulate it as little as possible because it's fragile. Edit to add- I also, when not dead tired, bantu knot my hair, in big ones, not tiny ones unless you're trying to do like a heatless blow out, (which I recommend over the heat) just to keep it from matting and tangling into its self at night. When I don't, I know have to dedicate a few more minutes to do some detangling in the morning because, please be gentle to your hair, I know its frustrating and I'm not at all perfect, but I do regret every rip and pull I put my scalp and hair through, due to my own ignorance and lack of love. I love myself now, and I try to love every aspect even when its hurting me. I am not a stylist by the way. Just a 4-c girl on the interstate 😊

Start a membership. Its easier for me to give $2-4 a month. My pay is rationed so bigger spends, I do have to plan for. I don't plan on extending my viewing platforms, at this moment, because I don't have the energy. Start up a membership, I and I'm sure a few others will join! I also LOVE the pink afro/hearts merch, so I really want to get one at some point. But, I have to be responsible with how much fake money(credit debt) I expend.

I had a relaxer my whole childhood until I was about 13. Don't do it. Instead, to keep your hair healthy, long, and voluminous, loc your hair. It's a different routine, but you don't have to do as much, and you still get to have a level of versatility with it.

I've been going between wearing mini twists for a few weeks and then wearing my hair out for a week...for about 7 months now. My hair is growing faster and I can easily get to my scalp when it's in twists. Also, I get the feel of having locs without the full commitment. I can't wait to see what it looks like by the end of this year.

We seriously need to stop normalizing health risks in the name of vanity or even time. What difference would the time make if it takes away your health? Are you really okay having to reapply a chemical that has already been proven to damage your body? The research is there.

You could do straight natural instead. It’ll loosen the pattern without the chemicals. You’ll have reversion sooner when you’re just starting out but after a certain point your hair will be “trained” You should do some research on it. That’s what I do to my hair and I protective style in the summer

I do hope that the natural hair community starts to embrace 'freeform-ish' looks for women with 4B/4C type hair. The pressure to always have our hair done is thinning our edges and emptying our bank accounts lol. Shine and length has always been the goal for many, but we should learn to embrace matt/short hair because it is just as beautiful. AND only certain people have what we have 😜✊🏾! Other communities/hair types would have to go through rigorously intense salon sessions just to achieve what we get just by wetting our hair. We need to flip the script.

I’ve been natural for 5 years but not by choice. I had a so called professional put a relaxer in my hair and my passed shoulder length 4c hair fell out. For the last 5 years I have never worn my natural hair but has always kept it in a crochet style. I am ready to go back to my relaxer even with that traumatic experience I had. I can’t even comb through my natural hair or don’t know what to do with it because it’s shoulder length again. I wish I would’ve embraced and learned my natural hair when It was in the growing out phase then maybe I wouldn’t want to go back to the creamy crack.

Please don’t do that. It’s your hair, of course do as you please for the health of your hair and the health of your scalp. Do not do that. You know what relaxers do you’re literally gonna have to restart your hair journey after doing that. Because it either has to grow out for it to go back to its 4C curl pattern or you’re gonna have to cut it off because it’s also gonna get to that point where it doesn’t stay straight without you putting heat to it so you’re further damaging your hair, which means you’re really gonna have to cut it off because you’re gonna get a crap ton of split ends This coming from someone who had relaxers for majority of life damn near half of it and I’m no longer have a relaxer. Please don’t do it and you’re starting to see those commercials were saying if you use this product this product or product you’re entitled to compensation because this shit literally causes cancer. Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. You can do so many other things and not get a relaxer. Also feel like relaxer limit because if you want your hair straight, you can just straighten your hair and do a hairstyle with it but if you wanna do a curly hair style you can’t because your hair is straight as hell.

The first and biggest con should have been the poisoning effect the chemicals have on not only your scalp but internally. There are too many examples and cases of why relaxers are bad for the body and health. It crazy this very and most important point only got a 7 second mention at the end Next is all of the damage. The moment you add the chemicals and it straightens your hair, it is damaged then the constant heat to maintain it on your fine hair (which is time consuming) is additional damage. If damage isn’t a huge deal the fact that harmful chemicals on your hair and absorbing into your body should be enough. Locs as many others suggest would be a great option. Still natural, no harmful and damaging chemicals, still can style it how you want(other than a wash n go) you see your length, access to the scalp, maintenance isn’t as frequent as natural state hair or relaxed(unless you obsess over new growth). I hope you chose an option that not harmful to you. I hope you get to a point when you truly accept your hair and all that it is shrinkage and all💚 Sam is the cutest and a good singer

I was Exactly like you... thought of exactly all you just listed and more so I relaxed my hair. It got damaged within a year it became so much work due to the damaged defeating the purpose....and unhealthy hair never looks good so I had to cut it so I ended up with no hair . My hair is now mid BSL cause I cut it so much but my routine has never been simpler and I've never been more content with it. I have fine 4b-4c I think so it's fragile. For me it's either healthy natural hair or no hair....cause I cut damaged hair.

we gonna work on our stress girl bc i feel you 1000%! not gonna hold you - the last time i relaxed my hair about a decade ago, nearly identical pro/con list and ALL, i legit went through natural hair withdrawal within minutes. i CRAVED the low maintenance lifestyle, and yet i was so angry at the world (read: myself) for months - but as rocky as the experience was, i don't regret it. i never retouched, cut as it grew, and tbh that transition period felt...transformative (i mean...it basically was just that lol) - akin to a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly or what have you. that final chop was scary before the scissor cut, and liberating once it did. i had to convince myself it was for the greater good (of my sanity). something i wouldn'tve experienced otherwise. so while the daily & weekly maintenance was 1000x easier, the flipside is that it only made me appreciate my natural hair more lolllll. these days, i wear my hair in twists for the most part and the active ponytail is achievable! the scalp access is all there. the battle against the shrinkage continues and that tilts me like no other so i FEEL you there (but the more your hair shrinks the "healthier" it is, apparently...what a blessed curse). i better make them twists count after sittin on my tailbone for HOURS - basically my netflix catchup time. all i know is that pride aside, all the love you put into your hair been evident for years and i just know it's gonna come back to u in spades no matter what you do to your hair because you been caring for it. i've rambled enough - long story short, you do you, sis. take the good with the bad and ride the waves the best you can - because what's another deadly sin in a world on fire? 😘 just keep doin them porosity/protein checks and all we can do is our best!

Its your hair Starpuppy . Do what you want with it as long as you are happy with what you choose. I will always support you and even if you decided you dont like it you can always cut it off and start over the hair will grow back . At the end of the day its your decision Star and whatever you choose as long as it makes you happy . I know many women with relaxed hair waist length and longer you have to do what is easiest and best for you.
