I put my 4c hair in the ULTIMATE ETERNAL protective style called (dread)locs 😂 never been happier although there are still days (more like hours) where I randomly think, hmmm why dont I cut it all off? 😅 but those thoughts fade and tbh its the best thing I've ever done bc its MY texture and everyones locs are unique (also I can bleach the hell out of it without being too worried) ❤

You don't have to cut them off, you can just undo them, it takes a lot though and you will experience a lot of shedding. You can find a lot of tutorials on how to take down dreadlocks

Girlie loc up!!!! All of these issues you talked about could be solved with locs, even the length retention. Of course, there will be shrinkage at least for the first year but after that you will be golden and they will 100% guaranteed grow down your back. Humidity or not. Plus you can still protective style over them if you ever miss your passion twists! You actually just get to skip the detangling part!Seriously, you would look so so so so gorgeous with some microlocs or traditional locs and it would be just like having passion twists but it's actually your hair. Think about it and watch some youtube videos! I locked my hair last year and I have hair texture similar to the nape of your neck and it has been LIFE-CHANGING for me, so this comes from a place of love. No matter if it's a loc journey or a new loose natural hair journey I would be down to watch! Love you Danielle

This is why I did diy microlocs. I didn't want a relaxer ever again and I was just tired of detangling, braiding, twisting, styling my hair so I put in locs and it was the best decision I've ever made for my hair. My only regret was that I didn't do it sooner.

Even though I don't have locs and my texture would probably be unsuited for it, I do feel like the comments talking on the subject have a point. I think there's a point in the natural hair journey where you learn and have to decide what really matters to you. When I first went natural, I dreamed about having mid-back length curly hair. I had seen people with my hair texture with it! It was possible! Then, I was soon faced with the reality of maintenance. And I quickly realized that I did not care about length as much as I thought I did. When I wanted to show length on my natural hair, I learned to straighten. If I just wanted longer hair for a day, I wore a wig. These days, I wear my hair mostly in wash in gos (or, if I'm being honest, ponytails or buns hahaha), and I'm content with that, even if my un-stretched hair doesn't even hit my shoulders. I've fully embraced shrinkage.

Love your honesty. Kinky afro high proximity hair is a challenge and time consuming. You can't wear it out all the time it'll break off. Can't have it in a protective style all the time it'll break off. Everyone talking about locs but when you have alopecia you will see the bald spots. Bw have so much to deal with in this world it gets overwhelming.

What you should be caring about is how your hair feels. It may not be able to talk to you, but trust me, your hair is communicating with you. The fact that you have shrinkage shows how happy your hair is. Do you only want to be the one happy in this partnership? Your hair deserves to be happy too you know. If you want people to see your length so bad, straighten it. Otherwise, it's best to learn to accept your hair shrinkage

Sis, my bro and I both get seasonal depression every year and this year has just been *so much worse* than the last few combined-- for him he just gets really impatient while I just lose pretty much all motivation to do anything and certain aspects of basic hygiene are absolutely on that list. Being able to talk about that openly is incredibly brave because the internet expects us to make a self-deprecating joke about it and move on...and that's not how it works. I'm glad to see you back and I'm extra glad for you to be keeping it real for the rest of us. I have the oiliest, scraggliest white girl hair you can imagine and at the beginning of winter I either go to the salon to get as much of it hacked off that still looks nice or go at it with razor combs ans an electric shaver. I know for someone who's goal is long hair that's not a solution but it makes one aspect of being an independent adult so much easier for me when the SAD comes knocking.

Danielle, why don't you do protective styles on your own natural hair? My hair is much shorter and when I start ro feel overwhelmed I will two strand twist my own hair. It comes out so cute and it's very trendy right now! And you can show off length! You can also do braids with your own hair. You should give it a try ❤️

Girl that nail analogy was spot on. I literally had that happen to me when i started getting my nails done consistently ( acrylic every 2 weeks for months) . I always had strong/long nails (according to family) but i noticed they were breaking easier than i was used to. I wanted my old nails back, so i stopped getting them done. It took SIX MONTHS for my nails to go back to normal. I like protective styling right now because im learning to do them myself. I just like to see what im capable of installing. Ill try passion twist eventually since they look so pretty. But i agree to give yourself a break when needed. 💖💖

I have ponytail worthy hair, and I'm natural. But I also have alopecia. I've dealt with alopecia since my son was 10 years old. I have 4b hair in the back ( it was all one texture, then I had to go and start getting relaxers🤦🏽‍♀️ when I was a younger woman) starting from the middle and 4c in the front. My hair sheds/falls out and grows back at different rates. I have been plant base eating for about 11 years to help my hair as well.😅whew! It's a process. Just got my microlocs done 2 weeks ago in Nigeria (its so much cheaper) ... I love it wish I did it earlier!! I have hair like Danielle. My hair fell out in he crown for years due to stress also, some grew back but it was shorter than the rest so I got the microloc extensions to have even hair. I love it soo much. I now focus more on scalp health and preventing loss by reducing stress and replacing my low vit D and iron

Something that has been working for me is doing natural protective styles. So I twist my natural hair & wear wigs. If you do mini twists it’s also a look too! I do my twists very moisturized tho so the shrinkage is wild & makes me look young af BUT my hair is SO healthy. I’m on month 3! Whenever I do wear my hair out, if I want to stretch it I’ll do small braids for my braid out & then flat twist it dry each night. It keeps it stretched.

I had mid back hair...until Sunday. I woke up and decided that I wasn't about to spend 2 days washing and styling my hair. So I cut it to shoulder length and flew through it in 2 hours. Best decision I've made in years concerning my hair! I did a wash and go and it's so cute shorter! My curls are popping because alot of the weight is gone, and my head feels lighter. So don't necessarily cut it ALL off but definitely do a cut over a trim. It's so freeing. I still have enough hair to do all my go to styles but it's so much easier to do it now. And I needed a change. I definitely believe hair holds trauma and I felt like I was so much lighter in my spirit after I cut it. And I cut about 6/7 inches off all in about 10 snips of my shears. 😊😊😊

Loc up loc up loc up!! I barely do anything to my hair and im still guaranteed length retention. And if you ever experience hair breakage again you can just reattatch the loc and start right back where you were. You seem to be going through a lot with your hair and I am failing to see the point anymore. I feel like you will love your hair locced. Plus you can still do styles if youre bored. Sidenote: I am also a 4c lazy natural. I never hated my texture or wished it was looser. When I big chopped and saw my coils I was excited. 2 years ago I was pretty much done with doing my hair and putting in all this effort just to wear the same highpuff. And then having to constantly pick at it because it got smooshed by something🙄 sometimes I miss my puff, but not enough to ever go back. I promise you wont regret it.

Maybe you should get locs! They're easy to maintain and the first few months you really learn to accept and love your hair in all of it's stages and have a beautiful set of locs unique to you and your hair type. Plus they're great for length retention whether you decide to comb the out or leave them in!

I used to do wash and go's in college. It was my junior year (2010) and KZbin had so many rising natural hair stars, so I was trying everything. But after that year, I didn't have time to do all of that. I just braid my natural hair (without extensions) and wear it like that for two to three weeks. I don't have the time or energy to comb every single day, so this style works. I also stopped washing my own hair because that was time-consuming too. One day, I said to myself, "Why am I washing my own hair when I can just outsource it to somebody else?" So I let the beauticians do it because not only did they wash my hair more thoroughly than I could, it was ten times faster. It helped my hair to grow, mainly because I wasn't accidentally ripping it out lol

I went on my first cruise about 7 years ago. I wore my natural hair out everyday!! I didn't realize how much I would need to wash it cause I didn't expect my hair to get wet but the cruise had tons of pools and a water slide and I'm like a fish lol I love the water. Luckily, our first stop was in Florida (key west) and I went and bought some conditioner with slip (cause the cruise conditioner wasn't it). I loved wearing my hair out and felt so confident in it back then. I'm trying to get back to that. I also found it easy since I was trapped on a ship and had access to a shower and didn't have work obligations like a normal week so it was easy to do my hair more often. I feel like my average daily life is when protective styles would benefit me the most. Some days I don't come home until 10 pm and and I leave my house around 7:30 am.

My edges started growing when I left weave out. I think it's the chemicals on the weave that dries out our hair and makes it fall out. I've seen videos on washing the hair before install and I see why.

Passion twists are the only protective style that works for my hair. I have no problem with my natural 4c hair but if I leave it out or do normal two strand twists, my hair locks up or gets fairy knots and then I have to cut it. I basically am trying to go back to as close as I can to what my mom did for my hair.

This video came a little too...on time lol. Taking my yarn twists out this weekend 😅they've been in for two months. However, I wouldn't say I hate my hair...I just get annoyed and tired of it. For me, it's called a protective style because it protects it from ME. Now im on this two months protective style and 2 weeks loose natural hair cycle, and I LOVE it. I'd love to see how you take care of your natural hair while it's in the passion twists. At the moment, I use this duo cleanse and moisturizing spray by Taliah Waajid called Moisture Clenz. Though I must warn you...if you have in blonde/white hair extensions (like me), the spray is green and will stain if you use it too much. As for fighting the humidity, only gels and the COLOR WOW dream coat spray helped me. And even then...those two weeks of my natural hair styling is a lot like a loot box in a game...you have no idea what you'll get. Edit: TELL US WHERE YOU GOT THAT SCRUNCHIE AND HOW YOU PUT IT IN!

I recommend mini twists with Stretched hair and beads on the end to weight it down You can see and enjoy your natural length in all its glory band it at night to keep it stretched, especially after moisturizing

idk why people keep suggesting locs when she has alopecia. Locs would make her bald spots wayyy more visible and she's already insecure about those spots when they're really easy to hide with her current hair situation.

Have you tried putting shea butter in your hair before braiding the hair for a braid out. I noticed that it doesn’t shrink as quickly. ( keep in mind you will place a lot of shea butter in your hair. While it’s wet per braid.)

Yeah I was growing my nails back for months after abusing them for about two years with acrylics and then dip powder "because its hEaLtHiEr for your nails than acrylic" yeah its the filing down of the base EVERY time you go and get a fill or a new set. And I wasn't even getting them that often because that was money.

I don't have hair as curly as yours but I found that 'protective styles' were breaking my hair. Any kind of braid or updo while sleeping, even with a satin pillow cover, my hair was snapping right where the braid started, right where the hair tie was. I started just sleeping with my hair loose and wild and then I have to wet a refresh it. The protective styles are cute but I don't know if they are actually helping. I was in denial until all the breakage started growing out all over my head and it was the same amount of length that would have grown since my last protective style.

My trick to getting through winter was trying to start plants for my garden inside. It's hard to go into depression hibernation with fungus gnats trying to fly into my nostrils and lay eggs on my brain.

Protective styles are an amazing thing, but people get them and don't know how to take care of their hair while styled. You still have to moisturize, wash( be it dry shampoo or whatever) and refresh the style and not allow the style lock up, or pull too much on the scalp. Not all hair textures are good for particular protective styling or all protective styles.

Same with me and i have 4c hair!. My hair I realized hates extensions/ tension of any form. Im now having to keep my hair twisted zero extensions. My roots are coming in thicker but im also realizing my self/ hair hate is real😢.

I've noticed a lot of people don't even consider that their hair deserves to be happy right along with themselves. Were in a partnership with our hair. I've had bubble braids/poodle puffs for a few weeks and its been a great way to have a break while kind of extending my natural hair texture. I've never had more compliments and I'm not trying to have "good hair"

I think cultural beauty standards affecting us is only part of the truth. Why are so many people in South Africa bleaching their skin? Why is the cultural beauty standard right now in Africa to have stretched hair? Why is it that the entirety of Europe and people of EU decent feel comfortable tanning and the rest of the world is hiding from the sun? Why is this happening in homogeneous places like Asia and Africa? But I wont end there, only 2% of North America are natural blondes according to the US census. Why are so many people bleaching their hair? Especially when most of us are brunette. I was only a blonde as a child and now I have dark brown hair. My mom was a blonde until her late teens and then her hair turned brown. This is the case for most of us. Why do they only represent EU as blonde in media? When that is certainly not the case.

As a black person wearing mostly afro, your hair is the way it is. Braiding, straightening, relaxing and sowing into it are all unnatural remedies for trying to make your 4c hair something its not. 4c doesn't like that all that so its Going to go back the way it is, whether we like it or not. It's like a white woman complaining why her hair still looks straight while trying methodes for an afro (because her natural hair isn't naturally an afro). 4c hair is the most simple hair to take care of and doesn't need all those products like conditioners or even shampoo's every week. Like for me I only fingers comb my hair when dry and never Ever comb it with plastic/metal combs, only when shower detangling. I mostly use my scalp oil (sebum) as the "conditioner" especially on the hair-ends. When I don't have enough sebum left on my scalp I use just a little bit of oil gels only on the strandsnot scalp, to where the sebum couldn't reach more. I only spread it on when my hair is totally dry after shower or normally dry before i need to go out the house for a long time. I prefer using J&J shea & cocao butter body oil gel, after taking it out the fridge (yes, the 4c really loves it's cold). Distilled water also helps reduce frizz and helps curl formation a little bit. It stays in afro, no frizz for days. The goal for 4c hair is for it to look like it drank water while still being dry, but not drowning in it (like most gel users). It needs to be shiny/sparkly, elastic and as black in color as it can get, resulting it being softer. All that while just being dry, not wet.
