How old do you think that 70lb fish was ? We shoot 30-33 lb red snapper from time to time and a biologist told me once they are between 25-30 years old. He says there is a bone in their jaw that shows rings like a tree stump. What do you think?
@jasonbihari6 күн бұрын
I’ve heard all over the board from 25 pound grouper being 25 years old and hundred pound grouper being 25 years old by people that got them aged so who knows. The bone is in their skull and I have sent them in before, but never got any results back.
@kv-ry5gh2 күн бұрын
I got a 24 lb Red Snapper last summer and I gotta say, I’d take a 15 lb one any day, over the bigger ones. Mine & the other two, that were a bit bigger, think biggest was 27, were just kinda shitty looking. Meat quality I’m talking. I saw a 100 lb Carbo from the Tortuga’s once & I actually turned down the meat, when they offered to give me a bag. The thing had tumor like masses the size of my fist & funky looking blood spots / clumps throughout the meat & they never tested it for Ciguatera. Just a nasty lookin F’er

It might have been a spawning aggregation. Why would so many big Carbos converge on a single spot? Cuberas do the same, huge numbers of big fish in a single spot.
@jasonbihari6 күн бұрын
I’ve been told that a lot of the natural bottom got covered up in that area so they might be packing up on what’s left. Plenty of bait and Leif there to hold them. This was in August so I don’t think it’s really their time of year for spawning.
