MLS is very anti-NASL which is good and bad. Less boom and bust and more ownership stability is good. The quality on the field however is not good enough and needs to be addressed sooner than later. Legacy MLS teams like DC United from the 90's would actually mop the floor with today's MLS including Messi. Too many teams, cheap owners and zero relegation translates to a boring product which is why MLS TV ratings are flat.

The Promotion system (relegation), represents another beautiful side of Real Soccer. That promoted team, will bring a season's experience from the lower league, and a Fresh American Face to American Soccer, year after year. Without the Promotions you're basically missing on seeing that new team that may have a different kind of players who just formed a nice starting 11, and so the National Team doesn't see that. National Team Coaches sometimes find that one player they desperately need in the second division. Lots of example throughout Football/Soccer History. Without Promotion/Relegation, there is NOT enough Drama in MLS. This factor is a Marketing Gold mine
@davidday2373

Promotion-Relegation looks like an awful system. I don't know how fans in those other countries live with it, to be honest. It must be that they don't know any better, they've never experienced anything else. So while they are stuck with Pro-Rel in most of the world of Soccer, us in MLS and the U.S. do not have to suffer their fate. The "Major League" system makes things much more competitive and more entertaining.
@CJBouhlal

R e l e g a t i o n, The Relegation Factor is the Missing DRAMA in an MLS Season. We grew up outside the US, in Football Societies (Soccer) with the Drama of a Champion, a Promoted and a Relegated Team. The MLS loses on that Drama when the last team or the last two teams don't get relegated to the below tournament. The Relegation Factor in Soccer is like a Punishment to the Team who Failed. In Soccer outside the USA, Societies or Fans Value this Punishment of Team who wouldn't the entire season do the right thing. This Relegation lends a lots of authenticity to Soccer, which is lacking in the MLS. Americans grew up with a different Sports model. Or the American Society lived the culture of MLB NBA etc... an honest sport that recognizes that Sports is a Show. In Football outside America or Soccer inside America, there needs to be a different kind of Sports show, one that is actually more real, even to the investor who is about to lose money because his team is getting relegated to the 2nd division. I think as long as the MLS misses on showing the FAN base the other side of Reality Sports which is Relegation as a Punishment that represents the opposite of Championship Trophy, there will always seem that something is incomplete. The MLS needs to update and accept the Relegation, it will win far more than it will lose. Some Players on losing Teams, will play unbelievable soccer as a reaction to Fear, the fear of getting relegated to 2nd division. Right now, US Players don't learn to play from Fear. They kinda play in a Show on TV, and so that's missing.. I think

One of the main issues is the lack of competent coaching. MLS values more physical traits than the technical ones, so the game looks borings at times when there are only long balls with heavy touches. @@alanwylie7207 MLS actually does increase spending on players. Average Payroll has been doubling every 5 to 6 years. But people don't see that -- I didn't know that until I did the research myself. If the trend continues, MLS will be spending the 6th most among European leagues (per team) within a couple of years. Also, MLS currently spends a smaller % of revenue on Player Salary than most Euro leagues AND all other U.S. Major Leagues. So when the time comes, MLS can increase that % even with the current restrictions in place (U.S. style), and further increase Player Salary. The point is that the restrictions in place is not what is keeping MLS teams from spending. It's simply the overall philosophy and strategy. The restrictions are to help ensure a degree of Parity.

MLS Has a couple of major problems. Firstly there's no relegation and as such there are a lot of meaningless games when a couple of bad teams play each other. The second problem is the play off system. No other top football league has a play off system and there's a reason for that. When two decent teams play each other in the middle of the season there's nothing much to play for, both teams will make the play offs and the game becomes more of a friendly. This is the only country in the world where football is a white middle class game. Kids that play football are expected to pay to play and that excludes so many kids. Finally getting in over the hill players from European leagues is not a way forward. Just look what happened in the 1970s. Pelé, Cruyff etc didn't save that league and Messi won't make a long term difference in 2024. At the end pf the day look at what the best leagues in the world do and learn! Always said if the MLS wants to improve then it needs to raise the jeopardy to danger levels by introducing promotion and relegation. Imagine defenders playing for their families future when up against Messi. There’s no way they would think of asking for Messis shirt, instead opposing defenders should be like rabid animals. If Messi goes past them then they should be angry and maybe bring him down and take a yellow card. The MLS will always have difficulties attracting the best because Europe has built up a power dynasty. In England, Germany and Spain football is truly like a religion, so as those counties have so much history and football culture it’s difficult to compete. @@davidday2373 this is a game that rewards teams that have played well with promotion into a higher division, and punishes teams that have played poorly with relegation. It gives teams at the bottom a reason to keep playing to fight against the drop. It allows the supporters and the community as a whole to rally behind the team even more so, knowing the importance of remaining in the league. And I took my time to watch Alexi Lalas’ response to the USL considering promotion/relegation. He said that with the World Cup coming here, now’s the time to make bold decisions. And if the USL decides to implement promotion/relegation and it works, then that’s good. We cannot approach this upcoming World Cup as though we’re still in the same position we were as a country the last time the World Cup was here in 1994 and there was no league. US soccer needs to find a way to draw interest from those who will see the World Cup up close and personal, and it’s an opportunity that cannot be missed. I can see the benefits of having teams such as Sacramento or Louisville playing in MLS from being promoted. Not that they’d stay there permanently, but having them there for a season or two can have its benefits for the team and the community that they’re in. Especially after MLS ripped off Sacramento from being in the league. “Relegation has no place in Major League Sports.” Just because it hasn’t happened doesn’t mean that it can’t happen. This is no longer the early 2000s when most of Americans weren’t familiar with the game or the structure of promotion/relegation around the world. Now people have become aware of it. The problem with MLS is that by now the league has become too big to where the schedule is imbalanced to where every team won’t play against each other in the season. Having a system of promotion/relegation would help the league with making sure that the season is balanced. Yes, it’s easier said than done. But one big challenge MLS would face is having to tell the wealthy owners, who bought into a league with the promise of always being in the top division no matter what, to agree on a system like this.

I’m excited and impatient for growth, but I want to see that come in the form of bigger salary cap (and a salary floor) and simplification of restrictions. But I think going totally rails off, open market would be bad. It’s absolutely the fastest way for LAFC or Miami to make up ground on euro teams, but I think doing that is also the fastest route to ending up like baseball where half the league isn’t even trying to play. You end up with Oakland and Pittsburg fielding the cheapest roster they possibly can and just collecting revenue sharing from other team’s efforts. I think you can hit a happy medium with a bigger cap number (maybe 20-25M and an 80% spending floor) where you can have a competitive league, be able to clearly take control of the Liga MX rivalry, and start to be closing in on the Eredivisie or Brasileiro level leagues of the world.

Different approach here, tell me what you think -- Instead of talking about a particular "amount" such as $25M salary Cap and an 80% Floor, how about looking at the Player/Owner Revenue Split instead. The Players Unions in other sports (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL) have negotiated with their Leagues/Owners to have a 50/50 Split (roughly). So if the League generates $2 Billion, the TOTAL Salary of all Players combined must be around $1 Billion, and the Owners get the other $1 Billion. That way, Owners are squeezed a lot more to get "Profits" from a small percentage of Revenue... so that's motivation for Owners to increase Revenue...while FORCING increased Spending on Players. But it all depends on the Players Union to negotiate that.

Dana White of the UFC, used MLS as an example of a league that also only pays it's athletes 15% of Revenues. Whereas other leagues pay the athletes about 50% (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL). His justification was that MLS and the UFC are small leagues, still in their growth phase (years ago)... Players vs Owners, Revenue split: NFL = 48/52 MLB = 48/52 NBA = 49/51 NHL = 50/50 UFC = 15/85 (estimate, to include bonuses) MLS = 15/85 [UFC = 11/89] (officially reported base-pay, no bonuses) The UFC is now worth about 15 BILLION, and I very much doubt that athletes are getting their 50% of Revenue now that the UFC is a fully grown organization. Athletes in the UFC have no leverage, they are not unionized. MLS is unionized. The MLS-Players Association has leverage. The question is, when will they use it? Even the freakin Referees in MLS are making salary demands... where are the Players salary demands? (those figures are from a few years ago, likely outdated)
@stevenygabbyperez695

If your revenue is barely covering your operating costs, it is impossible to pay a higher cut to the athletes. As the league continues to grow, we will see a larger share got to players.

@HarveyWallbangers2
@HarveyWallbangers2 4 күн бұрын
MLS has sunk a lot of revenue into infrastructure and academies. They had to start from the ground up. It is getting to the point where more money can go to players-since infrastructure and academies are in a much better place.
@davidday2373
@davidday2373 3 күн бұрын
@@HarveyWallbangers2 Which figure? I listed many. The reference of what the UFC/Dana White said is from years ago when MLS payroll was tiny, and there were fewer teams. However, I do not remember if Dana mentioned "15%" specifically, but I do remember the media were claiming it was 15% (and thus Dana responded with the comparison with MLS). Today, using Sportic's latest estimate and the official MLS-PA salary report, Total MLS Salary is about $500M and estimated MLS Revenue is $2B... so MLS = 25/75 split between Players/Owners.

You’re having this whole conversation about patience and perspective on the growth of the league but putting these timelines and caps on things that likely don’t matter. I’m not sure what you even mean by “capitalizing” on the WC. The impact of the WC could be something that impacts for the decade beyond 2026. I don’t think players from elsewhere have the urge to be in the host country and I don’t think fans will come to games or care more about MLS leading up to it.
