I'm glad to see another ambassador for opossums, seems like a great guy, but thing is they are not easy to care for. I'm glad he pointed out the American opossum society and there are few good websites advising supplementation. I raised three and they require an extremely specific diet if you want them to be healthy and have the best shot of not getting Cardiomyopathy or ovarian cancer, etc. He names a lot of food that they need but it's a very specific ratio and as he said, they are very picky about flavors.The only ones that should be domesticated imo are rescues that can't be released. This might mean they have physical or cognitive issues, trouble eating, and other issues that require a lot of time and attention, unless you want to be oblivious of the fact that things are wrong, as it can be very hard to tell which is why you want to do labs. You need access to an exotic vet for the checkups, medicines, and the money which adds up. There's a lot of people trying to rescue them not knowing what they're getting into, doing more harm to the animal as it suffers under the radar becsuse no one knows whats normal. Gentle creatures for sure but don't go taking them out of the environment unless someone who knows what they're talking about says that they are unrealeasable. They can get worms easily, and ear mites. Many will NOT use a litter box and go stir crazy in a cage. Normal lifespan 2-3 years for a healthy opossum. If you assume even 3 or 4 years you are setting yourself up for a bigger heartbreak. Not to be a buzzkill, still lots of good information but like he said they will basically steal your heart, as such I have to put in my two cents for the sake of these extremely sensitive and surprisingly affectionate creatures.

very interesting. thx! but: the point about indian astro and "the book of greek astrology" (yavana jataka) is wrong. the 12 rashis (=aditis) and nakshatras (zodiacal stars) are mentioned in the vedas written between 1700 and 1300 BC! there is a lot of influence in indian horoskopic astro from the times of alexander the great (bloodthirsty idiot) and the centuries following.

Seen a YT video where this lady found a wild possum, by the time she got done with it in a few short weeks, that little critter was absolutely spoiled rotten to the core... Lol. She literally babied that thing like a pet kitten, she has a pet that will live like a king and remain as loyal as any dog or cat. Possums can be so domesticated it's shocking.

Don't go grab random Opossums. Don't go pick it up by the tail. They have a very specific diet, despite their role. Past a certain age they are unlikely to learn certain domestic qualities and it can super stress them out. Read up first, friends. I love the Opossums as well.

About a year ago when I started noticing them really hitting my backyard, I was all worried they was gonna hurt my cats or give them rabies, I honestly knew nothing about them nor ever researched them. Well, I learned quick how awesome they are, and how highly underrated as well. They also pulled me out of a creativity block that was so bad, I was nearly ready to give up on my newfound passion of game development. On a related note though, this guy looks awesome, I wouldn't mind getting to know him a bit if he is still chuggin' about this realm.

I love opossums, i have been feeding them for 12 years..they viisit my porch with skunks, raccoons n feral kitties...they are the most wonderful creatures...i have 2 babies n 4 adults that are coming around now...i feed them, chicken,hamburger,spaghetti, eggs, grapes, cheddar cheese, melons,pork chops, cookies, pie, i have not had a opossum show its teeth at me since they been welcome to eat on my porch!

since their common food for big predators I'm sure the short lifespans include that as a statistic? hope people will be adopting more than shopping as plenty that have been rehabilitated and cannot live in the wild need homes. just hope to not see these creatures in your average petsmart one day :C

We saved our opossum as a small mouse size baby. He is the sweetest pet we have❤️ although if he really likes how you smell he might take a little nip and it hurts with his sharp kitty teeth😁
