Bartitsu: A Beginning Class in the Martial Art of Sherlock Holmes: Bartitsu!
This is a purely beginners introduction to the Mixed Martial Art of Bartitsu, instructed by Jujitsu Black Belt Prof. Allen Reed. The first part focuses on the use of the cane, a common article for a gentleman to have in the Victorian/Edwardian era.
Bartitusu was invented by Edward Barton-Wright after learning jujitsu in Japan, then studying classic British pugilism, adding in French Savate Kicks and bringing in a Swiss cane Master (Vigny) to his Bartitsu Club in London. Aside from Bartitsu, the club also encouraged and taught revival of sword techniques and the early version of judo. Arthur Conan Doyle referenced Bartitsu (as Baritsu) in a Sherlock Holmes story.
Please keep in mind: these are not "polished" martial artists taking this class, but members of the public who came to learn at a Chautaqua exhibition in Rockford, Illinois.
Further Bartitsu videos by other professors are available on youtube to get a sense of other teachings styles and techniques.
Bartitsu clubs are now throughout the world and many members of the steampunk community have added it to their own collection of steampunk experiences.

When I was a kid in France there was a school that taught gentlemen how to fight with everyday objects like newspapers and umbrellas, ash trays, plates, books and so on. The classes looked tough and hard and you were required to attend in a suit and leather shoes. I watched some of the demonstrations and they were wicked.

Very clear and simple demonstration of Bartitsu stick training. As for the gentleman who says these blows have no power go look up La Canne which came out Bartitsu and the internet you will see a lot of momentum can be generated with these blows. Prof. Reed is looking to teach not crush skulls. Reminds me of Tai Chi which is done very slowly and looks like it has no power until it is done quickly and the attacker is knocked across the room. Look forward to more demos.

As a practitioner of Le Canne since childhood i know how dangerous these blows are I have witnessed a 6'4 man have his theamer shattered in 3 places with one strike from a Blackthorn Caine

Well, you have to remember that this was a public forum and this was peoples first exposure. There are actually practitioners with black belts and several other arts, and the person that I actually learned from, Tony wolf,Is highly effective. He was also the person who developed all the fighting styles for the Lord of the rings movie.
