The cost of developing purpose built DTM cars every year in the 90's and 00's was astronomical for the manufacturers. It was either make it a cheap TCR based championship with nasty Golfs, Civics and Seats or a privateer based GT3 championship with exotic machinery. In hindsight, the DTM should have gone down the BTCC route with road based production cars built with common parts to keep cost down

Make it GT4. Same with Supercars and other local series. GT3 becomes a higher spec series for races like the Bathurst 12 hour.

I loved the old DTM series! To be honest, in Germany the DTM had a very tough stand against Formula 1. I loved everything about it: the hard labour of the people involved, it was the perfect blend of kart and racing. In its roughness as dirty as NASCAR, but nevertheless more with the distinguished appeal of the Formula series. That's why I went from F1 and after DTM to the US market. Champ Car, Nascar - that was more fun and featured the spirit of the DTM. DTM was rough, sweat, nothing polished. Small business owners sponsoring their hobby - I loved it. And of course the cars. We all felt the magic of AMG etc. on the streets. I stopped watching F1 since 20+ years. I never regretted the switch to the more pure and rough US market. Paradoxically these guys with all their commercial attitude value and honor tradition way more than we do. And remember: combustion engines are evil... 🔥😄

Moving the clash back 1 week would ease the travel for the teams if they go International. The real downside is track selection; most of the ovals outside North America have fallen into disuse. If they’re willing to do it for the coliseum, a soccer stadium could work. They are bigger as fields as well so it would race more like Bowman than LA

What happened to v8 supercars is simple all the greats of the sport are gone with only 6 or 7 good drivers left and the rest just making up the numbers

Totally agree with Jake on Rockingham getting a points race for the Cup Series in the future. In addition to the Cup Series, Rockingham should also be looked at by Indycar in terms of adding more ovals to their schedule.

Now that GM's Factory backed Holomagation team has switched to the Ford camp as it's leading team. We are wondering if GM will actually run in the series in 2026. With no real team to step up as the holmagation team for GM and to design, build and invest the dollars into the yet UN announced replacement for the Camaro from GM. It looks like the Australian series will be Ford V's Toyota

There’s no quick answer but I’ll do my best. Supercars has lost its soul a bit when local manufacturing for ford and Holden stopped. The major appeal in the 40 years prior was the major rivalry between manufacturers, because those cars dominated the everyday traffic Cars. Every second car you saw was a commodore or falcon. Since the influx of international cars coming into Aus has increased, the passion has diluted for the cars. The knock on effect to this, is a large population of the fanbase aren’t even racing fans, they’re sport hooligans (and I don’t mean this to talk down to my sports fan base) but so many of the loudest people in the “comment section” are just there to fight like a soccer hooligan, but now they passion has shifted toward drivers and tradecraft in they don’t have a platform to stand on and so get bored. But the answer to the question of why drivers are trying other sports is easy. Drivers want to race! And as Supercars became more and more famous internationally, manufacturers and teams in other countries have realised how good our local drivers are! Ambrose started this, SVG continued it by racing in blancpain gt series. Mostert strengthened it by racing with BMW and now svg and Scotty Mac solidified it coming to America. The racers here in Aus want to race anything and everything. And with the Supercars calander getting smaller it’s easier for them to race abroad. It’s not different to Kyle Larson racing everything he can or Scott Dixon doubling up with sports cars every year. It’s just new with Aus because it’s the first time they’ve been able to pull double duties! It’s all good, racing is on the up! Globally! Supercars will re shape itself and go again, just like in the 80’s and then again in the 90’s and then again in to 10’s 👌🏻👌🏻

Back to watchi g cars that are sold here. Have engine size limits for classes and place a maximium value on each class cars based on cost as they line up on the grid. This way a cheaper car could be more developed and an expensive car would not be able to be developed, you might see a Supra with a lot spent on it lining up against a Porsche. Also have a claiming rule that alliws the winnning cars at the end to be purchased for the category limit cost plus an agreed margin thus stops stupid expenditure levels as nd would ensure a lot more brands line up. Have a srrict homologation build number to ensure that the cars entering are really being sold in numbers in Australia. There are a raft of good hot hatches plus some good mid size cars as well. All of which would meet the win on Sunday sell on Monday. If all else roll out 2CV racing which is about as much fun you can have fo r as lmost no money on a racetrack!

In Italy we have the theory that to cause Frentzen to retire was actually the Italian commentator Gianfranco Mazzoni to bring bad luck to him, since most of the time Mazzoni said things about the race, seconds later some kind of crap happens. Example? SPA 1998, he literally said 3 seconds before the big accident "ALL REGULAR FOR NOW" and the accident happened. In this case he said something like "Think about it, if Frentzen Wins, he could be together with Irvine and Hakkinen in the lead of the Championship." Literally after saying this Frentzen stopped.

Where did you get your generic DEI footage? That may be NASCAR today. That was not the way it was when my friend Dave Blaney drove for Bill Davis. I assume you were in diapers at most during the period you are discussing. NASCAR has sucked since the car of tomorrow (crap) was released. Dave Blaney and his son are awesome.

When the closure of Holden was announced I became a member of various GM forums and tried to explain that if Holden's were not manufactured in Elizabeth South Australia that sales would tank and that America didn't understand Australia's car culture. The replies I got from Americans were that I was being irrational, that in 6 months people wouldn't care and still buy GM and that car brands die in the US all the time. What they failed to understand was that Holden and Ford is TRIBAL in Australia, when I was broke once I bought a cheap XR6 and one of my good mates would not speak to me until I sold it. When Holden ended I cried, all I'd ever owned my entire life was Holden's, 27 different ones but all Holden's. After sadness I was angry and I went out and bought AMG V8's instead. The other week I almost bought a VF SS-V but when I went to look at it there was a ZF Opeldore sitting next it and straight away I was like "nope still not over it" and left. I've been to Bathurst twice in my life as an adult to watch Holden win at the mountain. When I was a kid I was allowed to stay in my PJ's and eat breakfast on the couch 2 days a year, Christmas and Bathurst to watch Peter Brock be king of the mountain. When the ZF was released it was a FWD 4cyl commodore instead of V6 RWD in the base model, WHO THE FCK WANTS A FWD COMMODORE, YOU HAVE TO PUT IT REVERSE TO DO DONUTS. Then the worst was no more V8 SS you could buy for $55,000, GM then tries to sell us Corvettes and Camaros for well over $100,000 for a V8? Piss off, that's why Holden died here when they tried to import a tarted up Opel being a car LGTBQI tranny swapping out its opel for a lion badge. Who the FCK wants to watch Camaros race in Australia?? I'd rather watch NASCAR if that's the case. GM took away one of our national and loved icons, Australia's are loyal mate and we don't forget things we love easy. That's why racings dying here and that's why GM died too.

well, Frentzen was not good enough. He was in a championship-winning car. And he was a mess in that year. Then he came to Jordan, where Hill did the major work in the season before and in the pre-Season 1999 due to balancing a car. He was simply not fast enough to be a champion.

I think that Gerhard Berger blundered too in setting tech specs that went against the manufacturers' wishes. From F1 we know that the fans will happily accept whatever they are given, as long as it's reasonably fast and has rock stars behind the wheel.

Also. Gen 3 cars would be way more popular and Supercars as a whole, if the road variants weren’t so stupidly overpriced. If they were same rice as falcons and commodores used to be, people would still be buying them. Though saying that. Aussies do want full sized 4 door V8 rear wheel drive sedans. Hence why so many are driving dual cabs these days.

When it was Holden vs Ford, even with some teams running Nissan or Mercedes, I used to watch either the LIVE broadcast or a replay of almost every V8 Supercar race, then in 2013 an annual increase of the Federal Goverment subsidies provided to the Australian auto industry was denied by the government, marking the beginning of the end for the local motor vehicle manufacturing industry. Within about 5 years all auto manufacturing ceased including the demise of the iconic Australian brand 'Holden' which was owned by General Motors. Without the legendary rivalry between Holden and Ford, V8 Supercars has lost a lot of its appeal to many, including me, and now I only watch just one race on the V8 Supercars calendar, the Bathurst race.

I absolutely loved this season. As a German who did not like Schumacher (neither, actually) and picked Frentzen from the very first race I watched as my favourite, it was a great time when the commentators noticed that we in fact had more German drivers. I think Frentzen never grasped the chance to really live up to all of his potential and in a time like now where it's not all about physical fitness but also mental strenght, I think his run at Williams would have looked vastly different. This is, of course, pure speculation. Fact is: little me really would have loved to see him grab that title.
