maybe a video on the various 5 car maxi wellcars.. I have a bit of a mix of Walthers 53' and 48' single cars, plus some Athearn 48' singles and a 56' single with 26'containers and an Atlas 3car set like you have shown and a couple of sets of sec hand 5 car Athearn 48' well cars. The biggest problem with the lighter cars is they like to straight line corners if used at the front of a long consist..

Hello thanks for the video. Are these the only two 53ft spine cars? I'm primarily an Amtraker but i decided to invest in some intermodal to run and started buying spine cars on a whim only to find out that none of them hold 53ft trailers.

I don't think any manufacturer can compare with the old Varney die cast ore cars. Thanks for posting the comparison as I want to get a few ore cars for the layout. I don't usually have any problems with rolling stock rolling because I use Walthers Proto 2000 metal wheel sets. Cheers from eastern TN

You could look for the old AHM/ IHC ore cars with truck mounted couplers they should be quite common as they were everywhere in the 60s-70s.

one of the most expensive "resells" cars on ebay over the last 10 years or so. I have a bunch of MDC (original factory runs) that I bought for like 5 bucks each and then upgraded with metal wheels and number 5 kadee's, put in loads, etc. I always liked the size of them because I usually had small layouts (though I have run like all 50 + on a club layout - why you want kadee's on them) and a small string looks good vs a 90 foot coal gondola under a mine... but that's just my opinion. I haven't cut one up yet to "narrow gauge" (I have a tichi trains 12 pack of ore cars waiting for that job) but I have been tempted to do a few. (into HOn3).

In reality, Ore-cars were connected in cuts of four with drawbars and Knuckle Couplers on the outer cars to connect another cut of four Ore-cars.

I like your comparisons. You might want to research the differences in prototype ore cars. Most were built to carry iron ore. Some were modified to carry taconite. Also ore cars tended to be railroad specific. While Missabe and Bessemer cars were similar, they were different from cars owned by GN, NP, and other Lake Superior lines. You would typically find the same cars in ore trains, as they rarely traveled off the property. Also some roads used 4-car drawbar connected sets, while most others used cars with couplers on both ends.

Thanks for the info Craig. The differences in these models is definitely obvious, leave some links here about the types of prototype Ore cars if you'd like for people to look at. Thanks!

Great video Dylan! I believe Athearn has bumped these ore cars down to the Roundhouse line as they did some reshuffling and a bit of re-branding last year (probably the biggest is dropping the "Ready to Roll" name and simply calling it the "Athearn" line). I'm also interested to see what Scaletrains does with the former MTH tooled ore cars. They looked to detailed for the "Kit Classics" line, so I'm curious if they be part of the new "Hypotipical" line they just announced. Also, the og Roundhouse cars are excellent rollers, and they perform even better when you stick Athearn metal wheels on them!

@RWTX Жыл бұрын
Gotta say I agree. I guess i hadn't heard the "Hypotypical" news. I am hopeful SXT does something with the ore cars but they do look nice already. And now that you mention the RTR change by athearn, that is surprising. I haven't bought many new ATH freight cars recently but the one i do have has a different box and no mention of RTR. Times are changing!

what is up with the walthers mainline cars.. only one had couplers. I noticed at a hobby shop I went to last week, they had 3 packs of them and all had missing couplers on 1 too 3 of the cars.
@RWTX
@RWTX Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question. You are not the first person to mention this to me. The walthers cars (and most multiple car ore sets) have a plastic drawbar that you use instead of couplers. Depending on your modeling preference, you can use the drawbar or replace them with actual couplers. I like to use couplers bc I have to transport my cars away from home if I want to run them but if they stay on your layout most of the time, the bar would suffice.

The RTR Walthers aren’t even remotely worth what they’re asking for them with the crappy plastic panels they’re still using, and they’re starting to show up on the internet with discounted pricing to get rid of them. Intermountain is far more detailed for the older racks.

Ah yes, Joplin. Not much of a railroad scene there these days. The only reason _anyone_ has heard of it was because of the tornado that flattened a good third of the city back in 2011. However, it's good to know that this particular train show seems to have been a decent recovery story.
@RWTX

I remember that tornado. That was the closest I ever remember one coming near my town. it wasn't super close though. The town was quite devastated. But yes. This show really impressed me. I think this will be my last show until February so I was glad to be able to go. Found some good deals. Great way to finish out the year. I managed to make it to 18 shows this year. Not a bad year! :D

So I first O gauge layout belongs to the TexLa Model Railroad club. I actually helped design and build it. It’s about to be VERY prominently featured on my channel. The second one gauge layout belongs to the Houston Tinplate Operators Society. They are based out of the Memorial City Mall in Houston, Texas. I was a member there for a short time while I was working mostly out of Houston and Beaumont with the railroad.

I went to this show. Picked up N scale 3 double packs of MTL 89" TTX flat deck flat cars for the wind turbine train im making. I also picked up some Z marklin and MTL rolling stock. I also saw those N scale mini diorama's. So i bought a Kato diorama kit online. And I want to build a couple little dioramas. My freinds daughter loved the mini dioramas. My friend and I want to build a bunch. He wants to get his church involved.

There's a sign on, literally, every vendor and exhibitors booth or layout. All you have do is shoot the sign before you start shooting the booth or layout. You actually went by co hosts OMRAs layout sign. Not sure why you would think a group from south Texas was a sponsor but completely missed the fact its sponsored by local groups. Also, make yourself a script, you'll come across a lot more professional.

Thank you for sharing. I find it very helpful that you stopped at many of the tables for us to see what was for sale. Mostly, because this show is so far from my location in the west coast. This helps us as the viewer to still make the connection to the vendor if we see something of interest to possibly purchase.

Glad it was helpful! I had been told before that I go through to quickly. I had done so before to ensure the videos don't get too long and then I would have difficulty providing commentary throughout but it seems that having a good look at all things is more important to me than perfectly timed commentary. Thanks for the feedback! :)

Hey there. Glad to hear your input. From a couple of years ago, It seems there are less vendors. The table prices keep going up so I would assume that is the reason for that. We shall see what the next show is like. The next show is this weekend btw. I will have some tables, hope you enjoy the show! :)

Good comparison. In my opinion the Accurail and IMRC models are pretty far from accurate for a ACF prototype, Athearn nails it very well, so that’s what I’d consider for the ACF cars you showed. Between the 2 3281s by Walthers and AML, I’d say it would come down purely to whether you prefer price or detail more. I think you should’ve also included the Walthers Trinity 2980 2 bay car, as those are a pretty common prototype even today.

If you're a period modeler, (1978-1980), like me you gotta do a little research. What was brand new in that period? What old dilapidated cars were still in use then. What I buy and don't buy, depends a lot on Capy markings, and Lube plates. I end up having to do a lot of it myself.
