Nice job, appreciate what you do. It was a wonderful time to be a teen, SO MUCH was happening in every facet of our society but to us kids it was the fast changing world of Rock 'n Roll, fast cars and the birthing of the 'modern motorcycle era' thanks to Honda. It was so cool to go down to the Honda Shop (Boulder Cycle Center) and check out those new 'Jap' motorcycles with the squarish cylinders. The 305 was the hot bike for us 'poor boys' who couldn't afford a big British twin and whose cars were mid '50s and earlier. A few friends had 305s, but I had to wait till I got out of the Navy when I bought a brand new red '69 CL450 Scrambler, which I thought was the coolest bike in the world at the time, 6 months later I got a '69 Norton Commando 'S' and never looked back... I have fond memories of sleeping on our screened in back porch and listening to Superhawks, with their baffles removed, winding out across town late at night...Those were great days...

Motosport was a brand new word from Honda to all of us Yanks. My high school buddy bought the SL 100. Pretty bike but it had a notorious flat spot just off idle. Honda cured that in subsequent incarnations; and anyway, the SL125 came out shortly after which was a huge sales success. Equally notorious were the flat-black upswept exhaust arrangements on all the SL's. While they looked very cool and sounded nice n' throaty, they got dinged and scraped quickly. Honda also addressed that problem in subsequent incarnations. All in all, the Motosport line was highly successful; evidence that Honda had middle-class American motorcycling preferences down to a science.

I'm a big fan of folks who restore (or even restomod if done tastefully) the classic first-wave Japanese motorcycles. I'm old enough to remember when they were new to Americans and the Beach Boys included their song "Little Honda" on one of their first albums. Listening to it, I've always pictured a CB160 as the bike Mike Love and Brian Wilson were thinking of when they penned the song. I have a particular soft spot for the Honda line of "Dream" bikes. Around 1977, I purchased a sorta' tired 1967 Honda 305 Dream in black color. In my own youthful & amateurish way, I "restored" the bike to looking and running pretty nice. The electric start still worked! It came with an archaic aftermarket leather & plexiglass full-coverage windscreen which I'd use during inclement weather. Man, those handlbars would sure buzz my hands numb at any speed over 45 mph. And I always wanted to find one of the aftermarket big-bore kits which increased engine size to 350cc. Probably just as well that I didn't.

Imo a lot of thought went into the mfg of these bikes where beauty and function is balanced. The new bikes imo have let designers place bizarre looks over the functionality and comfort, and the lines don’t flow but zig and zag in unusual directions and are leaning towards the racetrack instead of a comfortable ride thru the country or commuting.

Hi. I was a high school kid on an American base in Japan, graduated in 1962. The reason the badge says “Dream 300” is that the name of the bike in Japan was the “Dream Super Sport.” That’s what we knew it as. I think the Super Hawk designation was for the American market, but later used for other bikes, as well. Thanks for the video. That machine is my “dream” motorcycle. Road several of them but never fortunate enough to own one. The ones in Japan were primarily black and silver, not red. Again, you had a 305 Dream Super Sport on your hands. To my eyes, the perfect design. A work of art.

This was my second ever bike but mine never looked like this. It certainly looked its age and well used. The one way clutch bearings in the starter were shot so that never worked so I had to rely on the kick starter which from memory kicked forward stead of back. But it ran and I had two engines. One with a 360 degree crank and the other had the 180 degree crank. You have a bit of blow back in the carbs, you may want to check your valve clearances or timing.

Beautiful restoration on the bike. I owned one back in the early 70's and it was the twin of the one you have, right down to the paint scheme, and it came brand new with an electric start. Those engines were bullet proof. One day while trail riding with friends we started challenging each other and tried climbing this really tall hill with a tree just to the right side. They all had smaller and lighter bikes than mine and I was determined to show them i could do anything they could. Well I hit that hill wide open and at the top I hit a rut that threw the bike sideways and me off the saddle. That bike got hung up in the tree by it's throttle cable with the rear tire a foot and a half off the ground. I scrambled back to it and hit the kill switch, that engine was screaming wide open for what seamed like an eternity. It held togeather though. Great bike and bullet proof. Thanks for bringing back a lot of great memories...

Thank you! Wow, that must have been quite a sight and sound with the bike hug up on the tree and the engine screaming at full throttle. They are tough well-made bikes as you said and no surprise it held together. I have now restored 30 Honda motorcycle from the 60s and 70s and this was one of the most challenging. Finding a good exhaust system and heat shield was especially tough. Thank you for your comment.

Jon, my very first Bike was a 1964 CB-160 Hawk!!! Red, just like yours! I got it used at 14 from a dealer here in Tulsa, OK, Jandeber's. 14 year-olds could have "5 HP' bikes officially, but @ 3500 RPM (like a Bridgestone) or Briggs powered bike, or the Harley-Davidson 12 1/2, maybe they figured it wasn't as fast as 90cc Suzuki, Yamaha or Kawasaki two-strokes. I bought the bike, my Momma bought me a full-face two-hundred pound Robin's-egg blue "BUCO" helmet, and said "You ride, you wear." In 56 years and a million AMA certified touring miles, I haven't ridden a cycle without a helmet more miles than I have fingers and toes! My first "road trip" on it was to Springfield, MO , about 1966 or 67 for "sliders" from White Castle! At 14, in OK, we weren't allowed on the I-44 Turnpike to Joplin, MO. But at the MO line, I left old Route 66 and sped-up to 55-60 MPH. Great resto-job you've done. The factory red paint seemed to oxidize "over-night" and give it a "pink haze".

Thank you, I'll have to post a video of the blue one I just finished. It has the earliest serial of any of the 10 160s I have restored. It was definitely built in 1964. Wearing a helmet or all the gear, all the time is a great idea for sure. I spend way more time working on them than riding them though. I have seen what you mean on some original paint parts. Hopefully this modern PPG single-stage paint I am using will hold up better. Thx for your comment!

If you don't have OEM style Lexan "305 SuperSport" tank badges, there's an old guy up in Minnesota "re-popping" them. Last I heard his price was about $200 a pair, but his don't yellow from gasoline fumes like the originals did, or get those tiny hair-line sub-surface "cracks". His are optical resin (eyeglass lenses stuff). He was on Fee-Pay with other parts too. For a "runner" rather than a Concours bike, Candlepower (Inc.) made a 6 3/8" headlight reflector and lens and I'm running an LED headlight and have the weak selenium rectifier in the shop and a solid-state rectifier/regulator and electronic ignition on my 1964. The 1964 coils are original and have weakened with age. I turned 70 in Dec. 2023, and year before last, I rode it to my neurologist's office while I was still walking like a stepped-on roach from a major stroke! In 2023, I barely put 3500 miles on her, but she got fresh Castrol 10W-40 "R" oil twice anyway. She pulls 75 MPH with me at 157 pounds and 5'9" all day @ 7500-ish RPM of her 11,000 red-line.

Nice to see the original Honda blue color on this bike. I worked for two dealers, there were four options - Red, Blue, White, and Black. The seat looks so good with the chrome trim and that little hump against the tank. Seems like we started seeing that feature in 1966 along with the change from steel lower for sliders to the aluminum like you have here. There was a handle bar change also, went from flat like yours (which was standard from the first CBs) to a modest rise starting in '66 also, IIRC. Only had one issue with my own Super Hawk when it broke a shift fork roller at about 2000 miles and I sold it to a friend.
