I am a personal chef, but I'm unsure how to market myself effectively in this field. My goal is to focus more on being a personal chef by 2025. In the meantime, I run a food spot, but I want to grow my personal chef services to increase my income and reduce reliance on the food spot.

What is the difference between my clients kitchens and my kitchen?
@ChefShelleyB11 күн бұрын
@@brucev3480 ask your health dept for a local and exact explanation. My understanding is that when preparing hazardous foods (which is why cottage laws allow only baked and other goods) is that it has to be prepared in a kitchen the client knows is safe. So in a commercial kitchen, the health department inspects and certifies it so people know that it’s safe. When you’re cooking in the clients home it’s their home and they see you so in theory they know it’s safe. In reality any way can be safe or unsafe, but that is not the letter of the law.
@brucev348011 күн бұрын
The issue I'm having is I don't want to cook in other people's kitchens. I would like to work omena weekly menu with them, prepare it in my kitchen and take it to their home. I don't want to do shopping for only them. If I have a client that wants Salisbury Steaks for one of their meals. I go to the store and I see five pound packages of ground beef are on sale. I would like to buy that five pound package and freeze it and have it available for my next client that wants Salisbury Steak or if I need ground beef because someone wants Lasagna Bolognese. I can go straight to my freezer. I want to have my own stocked pantry I can just pull from. With all that being said. Getting that started is hard.

As I talk about in the video, that business model is selling food whereas personal chef services is just that, a service. You should work through both models and look at the profit involved. I guarantee it is a lot easier and more profitable to do personal chef services. Also doing it out of your home can lead to trouble. There are plenty of trolls who love to put people and ruin their businesses. Also your liability insurance will not cover you if there is an issue. Can you imagine making someone seriously ill and getting sued? There is a lot to consider before you move forward no matter what type of business you want.

I don't know if I'm wholly this but I definitely have the planner gene. I have cooked for others in many situations. I've worked as a cooking teacher, a food photographer and most recently cooking for people with difficult dietary restrictions due to illness. I think as a planner I can make the most $ and serve the most people with my ability to plan, prep and multitask. As an assistant I've been told I am good at figuring out what chef needs next. So yeah, not sure what I should do to be more successful as a personal cook for others. I think I like the variety and the challenge of the niche of dietary restrictions because it's fun and challenging to learn how to cook and bake gluten free or use no oil in cooking. That to me is fun. So what kind of cook do you think I am?
@ChefShelleyB16 күн бұрын
You've got a lot of the skills needed to be a great personal chef, what do you mean by ‘be more successful’?
@puggirl41515 күн бұрын
@@ChefShelleyB I think my problem is in negotiating jobs and making materials for the client to fill out so they don't forget to tell me important dietary needs. Also although I've done plenty of work none of it was ever in a formal kitchen setting but many one off jobs or jobs I didn't get because I screwed up getting all the info or some other reason. I think I probably haven't applied myself to all the details due to the impulsive nature of being recommended for a job and the interview happening too fast. This is forcing me to recognize that I should prepare the materials I need like paper work and contracts before I go for any job. As a planner of course I already know what I need to do. Thanks for the little shove🙏

Do you prefer to use disposables? That sort of thing. I know it's all specific to the customer, but what's the most typical way that clients prefer?

I’m just starting my journey of becoming a personal chef, but struggling to come up with ideas for dinner parties. Like, what kind of dinner events should I do? Do I need a theme? The menu and pricing, I already know what I want to do and charge, but it’s just the type of private party. That I’m having trouble with. Do you have any advice that you can give me?
@ChefShelleyBАй бұрын
@@brandondixon7057 think about your specialty and the type of food that you love to cook. Does that naturally fit a certain type of client? What type of event would they want to have a dinner party for? Would they be more likely to want a plated dinner or family style or buffet? fancy or casual? Come up with three dinner parties that you would like to do, create a complete plan for them with menu and pricing and everything and that will be where you can start.
