It must be said , i took up modelling 2 yrs ago after a hiatus of probably 50 plus years , back as a kid i was not as bothered about perfection and also airbrushing had not been invented for the home modeller . But since returning my expectations are a lot higher and i have sought countless advice on how to achieve a basic camo pattern on ww2 aircraft and all i get told is you need to do this that or the other and it works 1st time everytime . Well they must be professional painters or bulls/////TTERSlol because it NEVER works for me , most involve the use of tackworms or silly putty etc and all i find using them is an un-recorgnisable mess once completed . So after watching your video im hoping i can at least produce some work that i am happy to display instead of hiding it away through embarrassment , iI only have one question you obviously paint the plane in 1st solid colour before you add tape for 2nd colour how long do you leave 1st coat to dry before adding tape ? as i can imagine doing it too soon the paint would peel off as you pull tape off . Many Thanks for taking time to show and explain your method . all the best Tye

Like nearly everyone else, AM got the wheel wells wrong. They blocked them off at the back, which is incorrect. In fact, the back of the wheel wells is actually the front of the main spar. When I built this kit the first time I left it alone. The second time I used a saw and removed the back of the wheel wells, extended the rib and inserted a piece of styrene sheet to simulate the main spar.

I donated 12 models to the legion here in Marathon Ontario. They went the extra mile for them as they had two retired gentlemen build a huge display case (enclosed) with glass. I would imagine it costed a fair bit because it was all solid maple and it looks fantastic. They even installed a light for each of the four shelves. I am in the process of making a write up on each plane etched on a metal plate mounted on a wood back-ground. I have two very large bookshelves with 14 inch shelves here at home that were made by the menonites in Waterloo at the St.Jacobs furniture store before I left and moved north to Superior. 😊Cheers from Marathon and I love your channel and your workmanship on the models as it has helped me become a better modler 👍 edited for spelling mistakes...haha

I think you are really going to enjoy this kit, it's a lot of fun :) One thing to look out for is when you assemble the 2 halves of the fuselage, it's not a bad fit, but I wish they had added a few extra pins to help stabilize everything.

Awards? On the upper bookshelves, where they don't encumber. Same with medals. All the diplomas were put in a folder eons ago. And now, for the main show. I don't throw away any of my scale models, no matter how old they are. Worked hard to earn that goddamn money and then go chuck them scale models into the bin because they've run their course... It's silly. Some ten years ago I started basing every build in a proper environment, using a few roughly standard-aize MDF square or round bases. That makes it easier to protect the models when moving them around or storing them. No rattling around unless you're taking them for a Pike's Peak run. it also helps in making the models look better than standing all by their own on a shelf. I use left over server rack cardboard boxes for storage, for the most part. Sturdy and reliable. Flat enough to pile three of them together and still have plenty of space over the cabinets. Each server rack box can hold about 8 1/72nd scale models in their bases. Single engine or small multi-engine airplanes. For larger models, the standard triple corroboard box in a suitable size makes for an excellen storage container. You have to pad it properly, of course. Tissue hankies ain't gonna do the trick. The large plastic containers are viable if, and only if, the storage space has climate control. In the ever changing humid cold and hot weather I live in, the lack of ventilation inside the container can wreck a scale model to bits. Cardboard allows it to breath while keeping the dust off. My two-pence of average Joe scale modeling wisdom. Somebody may find it useful. Cheers.

I have a lot of assembled model kits, most of the i build way back late 90's... Coz thats my bonding with my father back then... The good ones, is displayed on shelf, the others i sold, some wreck models i made it into a diorama... Most of my models are in 1/72 scale. 😊

I have placed most of the plaques I have won under, or near the model that won the award. All of the models that I build are displayed in cabinets currently. I have three cabinets that I was able to purchase from stores that were closing. Once I need more display room at this point, I plan on placing older models that are not up to my current abilities in storage boxes to clear space.

A lot of what I build these days ends up gifts. Also, since you do planes, hanging is always an Option. Finally, skip your next couple kit purchases and puy a new display shelf. (Mine get cased in a glass cabinet, BTW...)

I'm planning a reorganization of my build space and plan to leave a space on the wal to hang my awards. You could pose your award with the build you won it with. For old models, I put them in storage and periodically will haul one out and rebuild it. Rebuilding is a lot of fun and present new challenges. I built and rebuilt my Tamiya Lancaster Grand Slam three times. I've also given old models to kids who showed an interest with the hope of inspiring them to get into the hobby. A question from me is what do you do with older unbuilt kits that have been renedered obsolete by new tool releases?
@marvinbaudoin7769Ай бұрын
My local hobby shop accepts models which are then hung from the ceiling or put on display. Also, flight schools in your area would love to have them for display or as a teaching aid to student pilots. Good luck!

Presently I have 22 completed kits 12-1/72 and 10 1/48 with about 90 in the stash. I'm a bit away from it becoming a problem. My plan at present is to stick to 1/72 scale. As for the awards, I'll cross that bridge when and if I ever get any? I believe that the storage issue will be more of a problem for those that are left behind when I pass on 🤣

It’s kind of a bittersweet conundrum. I’m in a modeling club and we’ve had some great model builders who have become ill or even passed away. The family sometimes brings their old built models in for the club members to take them and we also auction or sell them at our yearly club conventions. Some are eventually thrown out which is sad due to all the interest and work that was put into the build. We do it for ourselves which is the excitement and joy of the hobby so it’s sad to know that when we’re unable or deceased to know that it sometimes ends up this way. My wife and I recently had this exact conversation after a club member had died. I’d reach out to schools, senior centers and small local airports to see if they’d take them. Take the time to attach a note to each model explaining the time, why you chose to do a certain scheme and what it meant to you as the builder. I feel it’ll give whom ever adopts the model more perspective of what it meant to you as the builder. They can place it near the model when they display it. I know for a fact that the senior centers enjoy displaying them. With all that said some will end up in the trash but the builder still had the joy of the hobby in the long run. Gods plan. Hopefully this was helpful to you. Keep building until you can’t everyone!! God bless.

Have a very large glass shelved and fronted case capable of holding over 400 models (build 72scale a/c & 25scale cars). Unless something is damaged beyond repair I have every model I built for the last 50 years. Of course I build better now then what I used to. I enjoy sitting down in front of the case looking at what I've reviewing mistakes I may have made, how I've progressed. At some point my family will likely throw them all out but for know I get to look at and enjoy my feelings of accomplishment.

I keep my models, good or bad. They are a part of my history and a part of me. My family calls my hobby room The Museum because of all of the built models in there. There are several hundred in there. I'm running out of space and I have thought about putting some of them in storage to make room for the upcoming builds!
@davidorr6627Ай бұрын
The ONLY solution is to build more shelves. My son has just built me a large display cabinet with enough room to fit all of the models I have built so far and many more that have yet to be built. Luckily he is a kitchen cabinet maker, so can get some leftover materials for free, and get trade prices on some of the parts. The glass is the only problem. The cabinet has 8 glass shelves and four sliding glass doors, so that is costing an arm and a leg. It's got LED strip lights built in as well. Hopefully it will be finished this week and my models can be moved from their current cabinet, allowing me to get my die-cast cars out of storage to fill up the old cabinet.

What I do with all my awards?? Well, when I get one, I'll let you know.. ;) Most of my models are kept in storage up in the loft, and some I have on shelves in the bedroom, although I ran out of space ages ago... but it won't stop me building. One day when I'm no longer around, no doubt most of my builds will end up in a skip somewhere, together with my unbuilt stash, but maybe my son will keep one or two... Still, in the meantime I enjoy them as best I can.

I made it clear to my family that if I were to pass on suddenly, that they could first see who wanted my built models and then give them away, and what ever is left over, just toss it out and clear out the space. My unbuilt collection, well that's a different story, but I'd hope that my younger brother would take care and properly sell them off as some of them are quite valuable and I'd hate for my family to get cheated.
@nigelsmith7366Ай бұрын

@@chrispacer4231 check with your store before you try to dump a bunch of models on them. My lhs used to have a display for members but we lost it and they display very little complete of anything anymore. They also might have requirements for display- when we had the display case the owner required that we save the box edge to be displayed along with the build so that the case served as advertising

I don't have any model building awards so that not a problem. 😆 As for model shelf space I just picked up a huge multi-level 'store' glass display stand so I still have plenty of room. As I relative recent BOB ('born again builder') I'm lucky in both those regards, but the space issue is a common one that I hear often from long time builders. If there are young kids in the family, especially boys, I'd give it to them assuming they would want them. Other than that, I have no idea. Good luck.
