I love the opening of this video. We were never homeless, but as a kid you don’t know your poor and I sometimes enjoy roughing it. My wife thinks I’m nuts when I sleep on the floor in the family room. It’s ok. My wife thinks I’m crazy to eat once a day most days of the week. It’s ok. My wife thinks I’m nuts to drive an old suv when we could afford something new and fancy. It is ok. Comfort isn’t happiness.

One more thing about security. If you and all of your gear are inside. you can leave without getting out. Whether you visitor is a bear, a skunk, or late-arriving noisy neighbors with loud music, you can just crawl into the driver's seat and drive off to go find a quieter campsite. You can even do it barefoot and barely dressed because you do not have to go outside.

I sleep in my Toyota Camry sometimes when I travel. Cardboard blackouts on the back and two back side windows, thin inflatable mattress on the back seat, a Mr. Buddy heater on the console in colder weather (crack the front window open) or a Opolar fan plugged into a battery bank when hot out. Pee bottle with tight lid on the floor. Those are the basics anyways. Wax ear plugs and eye blackouts as needed. Not extremely comfortable, but good enough and saves a bunch of money on hotels.

I've slept in my Highlander. I'm only 5'1" and didn't think about sleeping on the passenger side. But it makes sense even for us short folks. I had moved the drivers seat up then when I wanted to sit up, had to try to move it back. Which didn't work bx I had crap behind it. I wish those beds were made for other then jeeps. How do the side bags hang on?

@TrailNewbie8 күн бұрын
Ya, I get what you mean. By minimalist I was meaning that I could have all my gear inside the Jeep, while still being able to sleep in there. But you are right, this is not minimalist by the classic sense of the definition. Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃

i read online that you should always store propane upright inside a vehicle for safety. Never store your propane tank on its side
@TrailNewbie8 күн бұрын
Yep, 100% correct. I didn’t realize that until I made this video and I got some of that feedback. I changed to a tank that I can store upright and now I’m good to go! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃

I had the 2015 JKU and had it setup similar to yours...it worked great. I sold it and bought a 2021 Gladiator and even though the Gladiator is "larger", now I really miss the functionality of the JKU. I have to sleep diagonal in the truck bed now. The Gladiator bed is shorter than the JKU back seat to tailgate length...plus I have to get out and walk around to get into the cab. Oh well...see you on the trails.
@TrailNewbie8 күн бұрын
Right on! My personal opinion, though it is more costly - is that the Gladiator is an incredible option if you put like a GFC camper on the back. That can be a really good setup. Next level. That’s possibly in my future someday - for now, the JLUR with an Ursa Minor is soooooo good for me. Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃

This is so stupid. If it were truly minimalist, he'd have food, a stove, and a tent.

Does everyone travel alone these days? I recently took a family of 5 in my Jeep Commander Overland with a 2 inch spacer lift back into Canyonlands back country over Elephant Hill trail into the Devils Kitchen and camped for 2 nights. Most the camp gear was on my roof rack with some in the back. We had excellent food, and just regular camping gear with a large 12 man tent and a large cooler, coleman stove, etc. It worked out great. I had a satellite text communicator for emergency communication, first aid kit, tow strap, tool kit, and bumper jack. That was minimalist! Today, 5 people going overlanding there, somehow requires 3-5 nearly new built Rubicon jeeps each with 4 inch lifts, winches, CB radios, Dometic fridges, solar panels, jackerys, roof top tents, on 37's to do what my family did with one old but well maintained rig on 31's. I do have lots of off road driving experience and good judgement IMO, so I think that helps compensate a lot of not needing a built rig when encountering difficult wheeling situations. I would like to have traveled with another Jeep for many reasons, but for break downs honestly the difficulty of that trail would require a professional tow rig to come tow my vehicle out.
@TrailNewbie8 күн бұрын
You make a great point, and I think the answer to your question is … yes. I think that the ‘overlanding’ scene has turned into a lot of solo-landing. I’m not saying that’s bad or good, but that people have really taken to overlanding as a hobby and passion. Therefore, they build out their rigs, buy their own gear and love the idea of being able to drive (vs. being a passenger). When I go out, sometimes there will be a couple (husband/wife) in one rig, but generally each rig represents 1 person. An interesting observation. Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃

I love the practicality. Thank-you. I’ve started down the path of thinking of what adventures do I want to experience over time. What basic kit is needed to support all adventures, assess comfort, organization and safety needs. Then Build/acquire or add as needed. The journey is just around the corner.

@TrailNewbie8 күн бұрын
Yes, great point. But, unfortunately in this video, the seat is fully pushed forward and also leaned all the way forward believe it or not! It’s sort of a design flaw in my opinion from Jeep. Is it possible minimalist for a family of 4, 10 & 13 yo kids.
@TrailNewbie8 күн бұрын
Yes, I think a family of 4 could live out of this setup, however, you would likely need a small ground tent as well. The Ursa Minor can sleep 2 comfortably, and you could configure the inside of the Jeep to sleep 2, but it might be more practical to do a ground tent. Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
