The ART of SLEEPING in YOUR VEHICLE | The PERFECT BEDROOM for Overlanding & Stealth Camping DIY

This is quite possibly the WORLD'S SMALLEST BEDROOM! That's right, I can't think of a smaller space where someone can rest their head, while being able to stretch out fully - with the comforts of home at their fingertips. Join me as I do a review of my 'BEDROOM' or my sleep setup for overlanding, car camping, offroading, etc. After watching this episode, you'll have all the DIY instructions to set up your rig as the perfect bedroom for you! It doesn't matter what type of vehicle you have, you can convert your car into a great night's sleep!

If we’re uncomfortable, that means we’re pushing ourselves to grow or experience new things. I live as a year round overlander at 67 years old in a homemade camper shell, living on small social security. I think of my setup as half apocalypse and half recreation and having a great time with my sense of freedom. Gonna live it as long as i can. After 07-08 economic downturn i gave up on social norms, not worth chasing anymore.

67 in a few weeks... disabled... will complete my 9th year living in my 2002 Mazda Protégé on June 5, 2024... with my canine service companion. My front seats recline... I sleep in the driver's seat... Hidden has half of the back seat. No fancy gear. Coolers & ice for food and beverages in the trunk with my food tote... totes for most of my stuff... a hanging bar across the back seat holds cloth bags suspended from shower curtain hooks, which hold shower stuff (towels, loofah, face cloths, etc) and sets of clean clothes for "grab'n go" on shower days at the gym... separate shower tote for hygiene products. Hidden's food and water dishes are on top of her tote in the floor beside her bed space. With Mazda being 22 years-old, she often needs repairs... so traveling away from familiar territory isn't an option. I am known in my community... local PD and EBAs keep an eye on us, helping out when issues arise that my disability income will not cover. It's not a life I imagined for us... could be worse... we're surviving.

Monologe was genius. As a 20 year old homeless dude in my 20s it never entered my mind I was 'homeless" I returned to it time after time until I bought my home near Yellowstone. Not hopeless that 20 years merely are rambling man adventurer that bough on sold several houses between adventures. Toyota motorhomes, tents, grand prixs, tents. Today I can only dream of what you do but failing heath at 70 prevents it. Happy trails. PS, get a little piece of dirts somewhere for when you slow down before they are too expensive to obtain.

New subscriber here I really needed this. I suffered IT layoffs and lost my home. My sons are serving the country I'm alone. The unemployment isn't going far, hotels too high or too shady, and so are the airbnbs too high. It's also spring break and that's driving cost. I'm waiting for job offers and have two new very important interviews this coming week. I need hotels for those two meetings and need to save in between. i lived in an old minivan for 3 years straight, age 62 to start. I got around on a bicycle, ate free at the church and the SA mission, lived on the $80 per week sales of my plasma. It's funny how many people "think' that just cause you live in a vehicle, you HAVE to travel a lot. The 24-7 Planet Fitness gym is just $10 per month. I'd move with the birds, twice per year, to avoid heat and cold. I never bothered to have more than a litter pan and pee jars in the van. Never cooked a meal in it. I always just parked near the gym, a college library, wally's, a construction site, a convenience store. I'd use the store's microwave, or the one in the college. I didn't use it much. Ate powdered milk, dried fruit and cereal for breakfast. It's not a bad life, and it got me thru college. I saved my college loans and retired on the way that I invested them.

Did a ground tent for years before I realized "why am I listening to the wind flapping my tent"...."now its pouring on the tent". Finally I tried inside the Jeep one night and never went back. Sleeping in the Jeep is not bad at all. I've set up mine exactly the same except the fridge is on a slider in the rear on my feets right. Yes, remote is key and the deep sleep is awesome! Nice job!

I’ve been camping in my Honda Element on the Buffalo river. Popping open the rear hatch and falling asleep listing to the river all night then waking up and pulling up a chair on the river and watching the hawks fly. It’s the happiest I have been in a long time. My main reason for opting to sleep in the Element when I am out was exactly what you said. After a long day of driving I don’t want to setup camp if I get there late, especially in the rain.

@@ThePrairieChronicles there’s got to be a way! Do the seats fold flat at all? If not, and they are higher than the floor of the rear cargo area, you could build a small set of drawers back there in the cargo area to level out the inside. Never regret an FJ! They are awesome!! 👏🏼 💯

@@TrailNewbie Awww, thanks for your comment. I'm not in a position to build anything these days, but thanks for suggesting that. I'm "between rentals", staying in a not great, overpriced little hotel room. Still looking for a rental home and wanting to get my home based business back on it's feet, but canada's in the middle of the worst housing crisis / housing shortage in the history of the nation. I trust God for each day. I've met dozens of other people - families with young children, disabled people, seniors, who have no choice other than live in their car or a tent or a friend's unheated garage, so I realize I'm very blessed to be where I am. I even met a young, clean cut man who's a professional contractor who works full time and lives in his truck because he can't find a rental. None of us have addictions or mental health issues. It's got to be even tougher on people with those issues. Your video brought me comfort, and I recalled times when I camped years ago in a Dodge minivan (rear seats removed) and it was a happy time for me. I'd drive to a lake with my kayak, paddle around, come back and nap in the back. Peaceful, safe. Sometimes spend the night. Then decide if I'd solo hike and camp in my tent elsewhere. I do love my FJ, but it's not practical to try to sleep in it / live in it right now, it's pretty tight on space if you check out FJ videos, and as of April 1 gas taxes here are going up again while any rebates are ending. The FJ (at least the 2008) is mostly steel, which is why I bought it (safety) but it's terrible hard on gas. There's what, 4 litres in a gallon?, and gas here is $1.49 per litre. I can't fill the tank for $80. I used to be able to fill it (with regular) for about $50. I imagine it's not much better in the U.S. I'll be living vicariously through your channel, at least for now, until I have a home base again and can figure out a sleeping arrangement for the FJ and start going on day trips, at least. There are some interesting places within even 2 or 3 hours of here. Hoodoos, winding rivers, provincial parks, ghost towns, big valleys on the prairies. Not looking forward to trying to remove my rear seats though, if I go through with that. I understand they're very heavy and very awkward to carry and store. Then again, I'm 5'4" on a good day, so I might try sleeping in the back seat when it's warmer here. I don't envy you your height. It's got to be so difficult finding clothes, beds, furniture, etc, not to mention shorties like me always asking you to reach things or change light bulbs or shower heads. 😂 I'm not good on ladders. @@ThePrairieChronicles Oh wow! I didn’t realize the housing crisis was so bad in Canada. I was actually born in a little town called White Rock, BC. Lived there until I was about 5-6. But I’ve heard how much foreign money has come in and really made it hard for native Canadians to afford even the most ‘normal’ of houses. The house I grew up in was probably around $100K when we lived there, I think it’s over $1.0M at this point. I love Canada, but indeed times are very tough! I just wish that there were some more practical decisions being made by the government that would help people across the country. Here in California, it’s beautiful … the most amazing state in the US, but the taxes, costs are off the charts. However, it’s the ‘price of admission’ to live here in my view. We’ll stay in CA likely for the rest of our lives - unless our kids grow up and end up far away. Then, we’d likely still keep a home in CA. We were fortunate as a young couple to buy our first home when prices were still decent in CA back after the dot-com bubble in 2003. My wife and I slept in our van last year on the opening day of trout season in PA. We are in our 70's+. It got cold, now we were in a PA state park on a campsite with an electrical hook up for an RV. We had a small electric heater and she used a blow up mattress in the van. I slept in the front seat laid down. She slept very soundly and I got a decent sleep. We camped for 2 nights and loved our experience. I can see people that live in their cars and travel. You know we made the experience work for us. We have a small camper but what pain in the @$$ that thing can be. You know a lot of times simpler is better. May do that again this April. As it has been pointed out," Don't confuse comfort with happiness".

oops! No PortAPotty!. Travelled all over both Canada and US for 14 years (well up to 4 months at a time + off/on) with my 9 year older wife from age 57 - 68. Two different Conversion Vans. Did not off road but parked all over the place, slept well. Did eat but no camping. Great way to begin retirement which is still going on in a much different way as we aged. Nice info presented but we needed the Port A Potty.

I grew up in a very outdoorsy, adventurous family, but we didn’t have allot of money. I grew up boat camping on islands, and even on sailboats, camping in the back of a car at an automotive karting event, camping in the sand dunes, camping in the mountains, camping in the forests. We usually didn’t have much we had an old Coleman cooler, a borrowed Coleman lantern, borrowed military surplus sleeping bags from the grandparents, and sometimes we even borrowed the grandparents army surplus mess tent. A lot of time we just slept in the car. Eventually we got a Ford camper van, then allow us to sleep, cook eat and be warm inside the vehicle. I guess that set me up for a life of adventure. Now three years on the road full-time I live out of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, though I recently purchased a tiny little off-road camper trailer just to allow me to carry more gear for full-time off grid travel. I still actually prefer sleeping in the back of the Jeep than I do in my trailer or even in a rooftop tent.

Yep. Big fan of sleeping in the vehicle or near the vehicle and not on it. Way more convenient, lighter and not putting extra weight up high. I have a canvas bedroll that contains a 3” foam mat with flannel sheets, wool blanket, down comforter and pillow. I swap it between the Jeep, the bed of the Powerwagon or just throw it on the ground next to the fire if I want to sleep under the stars. Cheapish, simple and versatile. I also throw it on a cot for winter hot tenting or in the gazelle tent during warmer months if I’m staying in one place more than a day or two.

Back in 2013 I wound up homeless in Flagstaff, AZ. It was winter, at 7,000 feet and my dog and I slept in a small Jeep TJ with a soft top. I took off the passenger seat and put it in storage, then put a cooler where the seat was and a plywood board from the cooler to the box I had built just over the rear fenders. My head touched the rear plastic window and my feet touched the dash. I slept with a beanie and wool socks, fully clothed, on layers of moving blankets. A four point blanket and several military surplus wool blankets saved our butts, but it was rough sometimes. It got to 20 F. On nights that it dropped into the mid t4eens I would get a room at Motel 6 with some money a friend sent me. If I'd had your setup I would have been in a mansion! You did a great job with that Jeep.

One additional HUGE benefit of sleeping in the Jeep is being safe from falling trees aka widow makers. RTT , ground tent, and hammock campers are all susceptible to them. The jeeps internal roll cage gives amazing protection in that aspect.

I always loved camping right through my youth then when I was 29 I lived in a tent for 6 months in a forest. I then went back to 'normal' life for 20 years. In the middle of that 20 years I lived in a touring caravan for 9 months but always had this calling inside. Early 2022 I sold up everything and moved onto a boat for 12 months, that just wasn't for me so i sold the boat and bought a caravan....ive lived in the caravan since then and i love it. I grew up in tents, but have switched to my Chevy Suburban. Rooftop tents need everything to be transferred into them and set up all while dealing with rain here in the PNW. Rooftops are also incredibly heavy, exposed to high winds and cold air. Ground tents can get you killed in Alaska, plus you have the set up and take down issues dealing with moisture and mold. Toyota 4Runners, Chevy Tahoe/Suburban's (2000-2005)and the Jeep Wranglers seem to make the most sense in a world filled with $100,000 4x4's usually loaded with groceries and fertilizer...

I chose my 2006 Pathfinder over an Xterra simply because all of the seats fold flat and there is plenty of room to stretch out. Bought it in 2022 with 68k miles for $10k and with good maintenance they are known to surpass 300k miles. So it'll stick around for a while.

Everyone always shows their sleep set up in cooler or nicer weather. Never in 90 degree heat and 90 percent humidity,which is what I deal with 8 months out of the year here in southeast Georgia. I have a bed set up in both my 2003 Chevy Blazer and my 5x8 cargo trailer that I pull with my Blazer. Having 2 bed set ups is great for us lazy azzes and soon as you get your rooftop tent you will see exactly what I mean. I use my set up taking my 2 hour naps in a park in between my jobs on most days. Thanx for sharing

I have been living and traveling in my 2019 GMC Savana van for well over two years and amassed thirty thousand miles and adventures with it. I sleep better in my van than when I spend the nights in family homes. I sleep on a Coleman camp cot with a three inch $23 foam padding on top, a blanket to cover the foam and a NEMO 15-degree sleeping bag. I love that I can change my backyard as often as I wish. You brought up a valuable point about having a remote starter in your Jeep. I will have one installed this year. Now, I turn on my camp stove to warm the van's interior. Great video!

I’ve been doing this in a Suburban and now Yukon XL for about 7+ years. Love it for car camping. Plenty of room to even kick back in a low ground type chair in there, heat with a propane heater and sleep comfortably. Nice video. Thanks!👍

I have a similar set up and sleep in my jeep when camping. I recommend getting some mosquito net window covers so you can either crack open your windows or fully open them for ventilation and to prevent condensation build up. They also provide decent amount of privacy.

Being 6.2 ft in height, I sleep in my Jeep almost the same way, but I have my fridge in the back (plus additional storage on the roof). The big advantage is, that you have a "change room" right behind the driver's seat which gives you the possibility to sit, work, use your laptop, change clothes, eat or just be in the car during bad weather. From there I crawl easily on top of the deep sleep solo. I second your point: you have to have a full size pillow, no matter how comfortable they promote those air up camping pillows.

Another way to camp in a Jeep- I always sleep in my JK when our Jeep club goes camping. My tailgate has a Teraflex fold up tabletop that is my kitchen counter and my back bumper is the coffee bar at breakfast. I turned the passenger side into my bed by removing the backseat, laying 2x4s on the rim from side to side to form the rear platform, reclining the passenger seat back (remove headrest) then put a board on top of glovebox handle to top of reclined seat to form the front platform where I put my feet. I lay a 4 inch foldable foam mattress on top across both platforms. All my gear is stored in a wicker toychest underneath the platform. When trail riding, I just stack the 2x4s and board behind the front seats and strap them down. Great video! Will share with my club members! ✌️

Oh thank you so much! WOW, 3 years! That’s amazing. Hey, the best thing about a Jeep with a good sleeping setup inside is: you can go absolutely anywhere! No matter the terrain, the Wrangler is the absolute most versatile vehicle made. And, that’s not just because I’m a ‘Jeep fanboy’ … it’s really just the truth! Having dual solid axles and some of the attributes like lockers, higher clearance, etc. I’d highly recommend looking at a Wrangler for your next rig! Thank you for watching and for your comment! Remote start your jeep by using two tent poles of appropriate length. Maybe use a rubber sock on each end to protect your equipment. One stick for the brake pedal, one shorter stick for the ignition button. Just a thought. I slept in my Grand Cherokee on many, many camping trips. Blasting the air or the A/C first thing in the morning is completely AWESOME. I also loved rolling up to the campsite with my tent already made in the back. This setup can also save a guy a DUI!!! Been there many nights outside a buddy's house or even outside the bar. I loved the quote, and because I didn't get it at first, it hit hard when I did. Happiness often requires us to move out of our comfort zones. Some assume those who sleep in cars have a bad life. Such is clearly not the case. Thank you for the upload!

Yes! Tent poles and a rubber ‘boot’ of sorts on the end I think is the solution. I’m not married to the idea of getting a remote start yet (aftermarket) when I can do a little DIY as you described! I love the way you described how that quote hit you - with the delayed reaction but impactful perhaps even more because of that. That quote applies across many areas of life. If we’re just cruising - - we’ll just look back someday with regrets. If we’re challenging ourselves - - then we’ll have nothing but great memories and knowing that we did everything we could to live a fulfilling and worthwhile life! Back on my early days “Overlanding “ in South America on my Dad’s 75 series Land Cruiser as a teenager, sleeping in the back of the truck was perfectly natural and obvious place to do it. That was until I reached a spot to set my tent and camp for a few days (there was not roof tents back in those days, 35 years ago) all my gear would be on the roof of the truck. I live in Canada now and after all these years, I still do the same thing.

Back in 1993 I PCS'd from Ft. Wainwright, Alaska (Fairbanks) in a single-cab pickup with a German Shorthair Pointer. I had a cap on the back and it was loaded with my partial DIY move. It started out that I had a small trailer behind and I could pull a few camp boxes out of the truck bed and have room for the dog and me to sleep. Around the AK/Canada border, the trailer broke. I ended up packing the back of the truck to the max. I had a small cooler on the seat between me and the dog. I had a pillow tucked back while driving with a bungee across the back window. I would drive all day and late at night just put the pillow on the cooler, lean over, and sleep. I did that all the way down to eastern AR to visit my parents, then up to MA. Once, while still in Canada I set up a dome tent and slept in that. More trouble than it was worth and took away road time. Years later I was out of the Army living near Portland, Oregon. Things worked out that I reconnected with my HS sweetheart who lived near San Antonio, TX. I drove from Portland to Castroville, TX in an 83 Toyota single-cab. Yep, drove long hours and slept sitting up in the vehicle. So being able to kick the driver's seat of my Jeep Gladiator to near full recline is a luxury and I can sleep fine there.

I built my Jeep similar to yours and I camp in it and I could actually live in it. Might have to one day. I'm glad I'm ready for most things. Only real difference I have is my fridge is in the normal spot on drivers side. I remove the 40% for my dog to sleep. It's always open to make things easier for him to get in and out. Great tip to sleep sideways with head over the console. The remote start is a life saver in the cold.

This is in my plans for retirement. I want to put a lot of miles behind me and see a lot of country. I have an old camp trailer, I mean old, like from the 60's. No bathroom, no heater or air con, but I've always loved it because it a hell of a lot warmer than a tent. And you stay a bit cleaner.

It's funny how rooftop tents somehow became the "standard" in car camping and overland, and those (me) that don't use them are now the oddballs. Generally I sleep in a ground tent but if the weather is too much I use a setup much like yours. Thanks for the video!

I'm so glad to stumble upon someone utilizing their Jeep this way. Years ago, once I found the Deep Sleep System, I started using my Jeep like this while volunteering with Backcounty Trail Maintenance groups. I live in the southeastern corner of NM so leaving on a Friday after work I usually get to that weekend's work site pretty late and as you mentioned it 's nice to just hop into bed; especially since most times I find myself in a trailhead parking lot. Then in the morning, as everyone else arrives I'm usually the one making coffee off my tailgate before we have a team meeting, and I roll everything under my deck and then backpack into that weekend's wilderness staging area. I did also buy the Deep Sleep window screens as they provide enough black out but also allow air flow in our dry environment. P.S. I use the basic Tuffy Security Deck as it allows me to put my feet under it with my gear on top; but once I pull my backpack out there is still enough space to store the Deep Sleep System, Frig & Powerbrick etc. under it so once I walk away from my Jeep it's "stealthy" and doesn't scream "overlander full of expensive gear" while left for the weekend at the trailhead. Also the ability to utilize all five seats comes in handy if we need to carpool farther in on Fire Service roads than other volunteers feel comfortable taking their passenger cars. I've nicknamed my concept "essentialism" vs. "minimalism" as I need more flexibility. Additionally, my Jeep is my daily driver so it gets left at my work lot or shopping lots; thus having the ability for it to "look" like a pavement princess used just to haul my three grand kids to soccer is also something that I had to factor in as I couldn't have just a dedicated Overlanding vehicle until I pay the Jeep off & retire. The intriguing thing is since I've been using my 2022 Willys Sport this way over the last three years, and gotten use to it; I'm starting to wonder if a RTT or a J-30 from Ursa Minor is really needed. Especially as my grandsons get older there would not me enough room, better to just get a slumberjack.com/slumber-shack-4-person-tent-shelter/ and save the money for better backpacking gear for the three of them. Besides in sketchy weather my daughter-in-law is calling us "kids" home. LOL!

I definitely relate sleeping comfortably in my Jeep 2 door 2010 JK. N most comfortably safe for me Around Texas to South Padres Island. Fridge front seat kitchen on my Tailgate futon bedding and love it every minutes miles on my face..I smile more then living at house. @@jakeowens1770no, the fridge is on the rear drivers side seat. No issues of not being able to see my mirrors. Though, you might notice - I don’t have a rear view mirror on my Jeep. 🤪

I’ve lived outta pick up trucks with camper shells and suburbans on and off for the past 5 years. I love it. Building a box van now. Still want to have a good 4x4 truck to go more remote too. Best of both. Luxury, stand up, cook, shower, etc long trips in the van. Short weekend trips to remote spots in the 4x4 suv.

I do the same thing in my JKUR on solo runs, except I don't have the rear view blocked with gear all the time, and the right side view partially blocked with the passenger seat all the time. I move gear up to the homemade shelf at night, and back down to the sleeping area during the day. Yes, it takes about 15 minutes to set up each evening and tear down each morning, but I can have full visibility plus also my recovery gear sits in bags right behind the passenger seat which makes it easy to access from the driver's seat. In an urgent/sketchy situation, I can hand recovery gear to a buddy from the driver's window without having to get out. I use a 22 inch wide thermarest inflatable insulated mattress, which I roll up in the morning and stow during the day. It works well.

Nice. I really love your organised setup. You can’t beat the comfort & security of camping in your car. I’ve slept in all of mine, from the old style 2-door Rav 4 & a Honda Jazz (Fit?) to my Delica van. I do sometimes have rtt envy, but it’s absurd how many people get around with them stuck to their cars while they’re just driving to & from work. That’s got to add to fair chunk to the fuel bill. Anyway, my dog’s too big to get up there! If you don’t mind me saying, in the spirit of encouragement, the background music sometimes gets a bit distracting. Happy trails 👍

2023 was the first year i ventured into overlanding from just doing offroad stuff. So i also sleep in my jeep at the moment. My wife has started coming with me and getting 2 of us in there is starting to take a toll on us so we will probably have to start with a ground tent until the budget allows for a rooftop tent or trailer. But regardless we still love the adventure regardless of what we got to work with

Right on! Ya, sleeping two in there would be tough. It might be better if you had two DeepSleep solo mats side by side covering the back, as they’re separate mattresses, then you might not disturb each other in the night as much with movement. I’ve done a similar set ups with a 2000 Grand Cherokee, 2010 JKU and a 2013 JKU. I’ve just traded the 2013 for a 2024 Willys and I’m in the process of planning a southern Utah trip this spring, thanks for sharing.

I love sleeping in my 4Runner. Who wouldn't with that heater?! Everyone's getting roof top tents and diesel heaters and I'm like WHAT?? Take the front passenger seat out if you're not using it. I still have room for 2 dogs, a ton of gear, and I can cook inside! Plus carry the canoe on the roof instead of a dumb tent 😂 I can slide over to the driver's seat and back into the bed at any time. I make my mattress with layers of ccf and inflatable backpacking pads. In place of the front seat I've got gear storage under a sheet of plywood. Takes 20 min to put the seat back in.

MPS makes door extension brackets so that you can open the rear doors wider. Huge upgrade for sleeping in the Jeep. Also, take your shoes off in advance and place them on front floor. Use flip flops to get in the back and they can tuck in for easy access later (getting out to pee etc.). In winter use booty slippers for this purpose instead.

Very nice setup. I had a similar setup in my JL. But as I am 6'4" I was facing the tailgate and my feet were on the armrest between the front seats when I wanted to stretch. It worked great for me. Also to maximize the sleeping area I have installed a drawer-style fridge under my sleeping platform. It worked perfectly. Another useful thing I had is I had a thick camping blanket attached to a velcro strip above the rear glass on the inside and tacked under the mattress. This way I could open my tailgate and the top window, use the fridge and storage area, cook on the tailgate table and still have a sleeping area and a cabin insulated and warm. I also had a gasoline heater installed in that trunk tub under the floor and tapped into my fuel tank and 12v power. Always had an instant heat. For the mattress I had a custom cut with a hot wire 4-inch topper. It was not a plush as my self-inflating foam air mattress in the iKamper, but acceptable. I wish I would take some videos, but now JL is gone and new JT build is underway :)
