Poorly explained. I wasn’t able to see app screen to follow. How do I know which train is mine( marked on the train? If stop shown on outside of train will it be my stop or last stop in the line?) How do I know which side of the track I should be on? Am I going north or south? I come from a place that does not have underground transportation.

On my most recent visit I arrived from Dublin and decided to see what the fuss was about the Elizabeth Line (I normally just take the Picadilly). Aer Lingus from Dublin arrives to Terminal 2, so there was a substantial walk to the Elizabeth Line platform to begin with, and which I feel effectively negated the time-saving advantage that would have otherwise been there. When taken together with the higher cost, I will concede that the Elizabeth Line was at least less crowded, but I'll continue taking the Picadilly Line in future.

I've been studying things about the tube station there in London like while taking the escalator that I stand on the right while other people head down on the left!

If you are from California you will find prices for accommodations pretty comparable to London ( unless you have 3 people in one room needing real beds not a couch) but the day to day food is MUCH cheaper. Wraps, sandwiches, takeaway sushi, Doner shops and groceries are easily 30% less than the equivalent in CA. Fine dining however is about the same as CA. This was such a fun discovery. My teenagers bought every snack they wanted. 😅

@@loveandlondon Can you make a video about ZIP Oyster cards?
@a.b.2849
@a.b.2849 Күн бұрын
Just back from London in May 2024. Video was really good explanation of tube basics. What I learned taking London transit system as a 65 year old adult. a. Do not buy an oyster card if you are an adult. Tap cards are used all over London for everything. I had not used one before our trip so I got a new credit card with the wi-fi symbol before we left for the UK and practiced in the US first. b. You need to use the tube and the buses together to get where you are generally going. The maximum charge is the combination of the bus and the tube and we usually maxed out every day. c. Look at doing the bus and tube if your ride on the bus is over 2.5 miles in general. Buses are slow, but frequent. Be down on the exit platform of the bus before your stop. I saw more than one person being too slow getting down from the upper level of a bus and the bus drive away before they could exit the bus at the station they wanted. d. I typed in" London tube timetables" in google to find where buses and tubs stop and how often they stop. I used the Transit for London timetable website. e. I used google maps the night before , planned ahead, and used the google directions to figure out how to get somewhere. Often the directions had too many changes and I tried to figure out the least amount of transit changes. If you miss one bus or tube ride there is usually another one in 5 minutes. f. Nice thing about google maps is if you blow up the map it will show you the where the bus stops are and usually what tube lines are at a tube station. g. Remember bus stops are on the opposite side of the road from what you are used to if you are from the US. The bus announcements are generally correct, but we had a few that were wrong. I used google street views to become familiar with where I should be. h. Older tube lines have smaller train cars that you can not walk inside from one car to another for example, Piccadilly and Northern line. Also on the older lines on long train cars you may not be able to exit at all tube stations at the back cars. They will announce for you to move to another car at a stop before that tube station. i. New tube lines have wider train cars and the cars interconnect on the inside from one car to another for example, District, Circle, and London Overground. j. The Circle and District lines overlap in the central part of London, In the train car there will be an Circle map and on the opposite wall a District map, if going outside of central London make sure you look at the correct map for the train you are on. if staying in central London it does not matter as they stop at the same location. j. When waiting for the tube go to the front or the back of the boarding platform. Most people stand where the entrance/exit comes to boarding platform and those cars are the fullest. k. Usually the older tube stations at small stations will not have an escalator or lift, "Elevator". l. Use the map in the tube station to make sure you are on the right platform, and the train is going where you want. The most confusing tube was the Northern line because is splits at the Beginning , middle and End. I had to ask someone to make sure I was on the correct line. Just like an airline gate you have to know the train, the platform and direction, or end station. The exception was the Circle going clockwise which gave a station in the direction we wanted not the end station. m. Make sure you tap in at a gate that has the green light and a closed gate. When leaving make sure you tap out again. For example, we went to Clapham Junction from the London overground to the National Rail out of London. There is no gate to exit to get on the National Rail, but there were a few tap card like gate stations with no gates to tap out at the end of the line. Otherwise you will be charged the max for that line. n. Last coming out of a tube station I was often not sure of where I was. Most will have a map nearby and they helped me get reoriented.

I’m from the UK and live just outside of London. (Am very familiar with London) I just visited NYC recently for the first time and have to say both London and NYC are amongst the greatest cities in the world. NYC has its fair share of problems in certain areas like homelessness, begging and some lunatic people which you wont find on the same scale in London but where NYC gets it right it simply is unmatched and will totally blow you away. Both are amazing places and if you get to see both in your life you are privileged.
