Trying to think of the part that Antony Sharp played that embedded his face in my memory, it's probably because he was there in so many...I think it could be 'steptoe and son, where as a vicar visiting on the church scrounch, a what the butler machine, ends up a church 'do', the flickering entertaiment, proves very popular, and stars old man steptoe.

Great review Phil, I totally agree the film would have been better with a stronger lead, Jack Jones is so bland and his song is so middle of the road. I always thought that Roger Daltrey would have been a great choice, after all he was no stranger to horror films as he was in The Legacy - from about the same time, 1978! Thank goodness for the lovely Pamela Stephenson and, the always fantastic, Sheila Keith. 6 or 7 out of 10 is a fair score.
@MrSuperphil2 күн бұрын
@@zsatsfm yeah Roger Daltrey would’ve been perfect. He was good in The Legacy. Or someone like David Bowie. Would’ve been a much stronger film.

It's some thought to contemplate that tens of millions more have been spent on the budget(s) of other movies, but yet? They are vastly inferior in terms of quality, suspense and memorability. I watched many rented horror movies throughout the 1980's, and they are just NOT stored into my memory banks. I remember the titles, but not what actually happened years after watching them. And the inclusion of Donald Pleasence into the Halloween series to kick it off truly added to the memorability of it all. it was a masterstroke acquisition on John Carpenters behalf when he signed him up. Perhaps that's a contributing factor regarding the genius of movie making legends i.e. talent appraisal by casting the right actor for the right movie role at exactly the right time? Ditto Spielberg with Robert Shaw in Jaws etc.
@MrSuperphil2 күн бұрын
Casting is one of the key factors for anything - film and television. The trouble these days is they have to include diversity into everything, over talent. So a better actor wont get a certain part just because he is white and not black. Thus a drop in quality.
@rodeoruz2 күн бұрын
Agree! Richard Dreyfuss is absolutely scathing about woke and it's infestation of Hollywood and movie making in general. I detest it all, ditto the way the poppy appeal, what with Royal British Legion now peddling its very own ‘LGBT poppy’. Is nothing sacred anymore? The 'sacrifice', suffering and bloodshed was never anything to do with ethnicity or sexuality, because in war everyone was the same anyhow. How divisive! Is there anything nowadays that can be left alone so that it cannot be hijacked and denigrated by virtue signaling lefty loon crack-pottery?

Nice review, P & B, you always give good and thoughtful reasons and ideas how things might have been made better. It always amazes me how films are made flying by the seat of the pants. That's a normal part of art I guess but they do need to pull it all together at the end which they don't always do!

A fair review Phil. I liked it more when younger i think mostly for the continuity of it, but rewatched it a couple of years back with my son and it's quite dull isn't it. I get they found a good location to use in the sequel but talk about overstaying your welcome. Moved too far away from the original's suspense too, which for me is the one of my favourite elements of film making and Carpenter really was good at it. Never a massive fan of sequels, just a certain few and Halloween being so good was hard to compete with. I love Halloween 3 mind, because of the original concept. BTW Phil i've seen Bones in all sorts over the years, surprised you thought he was lying with his appearance here mate. But you know him better than me.👍

It is flawed but okay but I feel if the producers kept the beginning until michael gets shot. Then connect to from the hospital scene to the rest of Halloween III it would of been a classic film. I love Halloween 3 but it got short changed because of this sequel and audiences expectations of wanting Michael Myers. If Carpenter and Debra Hill had started a series of Halloween stories after Halloween II like Cloverfield series. I feel it would of done ok.
@MrSuperphil3 күн бұрын
Think John Carpenter messed up Halloween 2 by forcing the director to add more gore and violence to the film. He shouldn’t have interfered with the directors vision. Love Halloween 3 because its totally different. It shouldn’t have been called Halloween 3 really.
@ninfilms3 күн бұрын
@MrSuperphil I just feel doing Halloween two films with Michael Myers then say right we making an Halloween film but no Michael Myers. It is like making a Superman film but no Superman. As I said if Carpenter decided to go with a different Halloween theme he should of done that after Halloween. Like Cloverfield where you had a monster on a rampage then you had 10 Cloverfield Lane which was a paranoia film but it links with Cloverfield in the finale.

@MrSuperphil yes he was selected after Debra Hill watched Rick's short film. Debra Hill in my opinion is unsung genius would produced John Carpenter early work until Escape from New York. Ah yes…RTD…the thing about RTD is that, at the start of his career, he actually did some really interesting stuff on kids tv. (Dark Season, Century Falls), but then hijacked Dr Who along with the rest of the Fitzroy crowd and turned it into ‘Nu Who’, which was heavily influenced by utter shite like ‘Buffy’ and ‘Smallville’. The problem with a lot of media today is that it is made by ‘fanboys’ and that these kind of people have no objectivity over the work that they are involved in. Do you think that people like Robert Holmes and Terence Dicks were fans of stuff like Dr Who? No, they were proper professional writers who saw it as a job and tired to bring a sense of literary ability to the things they wrote, instead of being slavish tosspot fans of a franchise who feel that they have some felonious sense of self-ownership of said programme. There are quite a few very interesting articles on the ‘Fitzroy Crowd’ on the internet which goes into great detail about how these arseholes took on Dr Who really in an effort to further there own careers and how they actually look down on the classic series as being a “bit naff” and think that their watered-down, soap-opera version is far superior. However, if people like Davies and Moffat think they have ever written anything that even approaches the like of Pyramids of Mars, Talons of Weng Chiang or Caves of Androzani they must be smoking the hope-ium…
