Just when you think all is going to plan on a farm.......Suddenly it's not! Mid winter in Australia, and here on our dairy farm in Southern Victoria the cold, wet days are beginning to kick in... After well below average rainfall the past two months, this more 'normal' weather pattern gives us hope for spring which for us is just a few weeks away.

Announced inspections seem like cheating!!! Why would you milk twice a day if you could milk OAD?? Whats the financial impact?
@ONeillDairyFarm11 күн бұрын
Farms wouldn’t sign up for bordbia if it was signing up for another inspection like the department of agriculture one. It’s not trying to catch farmers it’s trying to incentivise, help and guide them to go above and beyond to make Irish produce a step above everyone else’s and that’s why Irish bord bia approved produce can be marketed so well abroad by the body. Whosever brain child it was has done wonders for Irish food exports

Crows are a right nuisance, especially at this time of year, where food is concerned. You can hear them alert their mates when they see you at feeding time and sweep down when you leave the yard . It's been necessary to change feeding spots, here ,to covered areas. Your positivity is admirable, Joe, in this cold, wet , excuse for a summer. Glad things are working out for you and your multi-talented family ; and maybe a warm spell of sunshine will visit us soon,

I am a kinda neighbour of yours ( up the road towards Dublin) and I am just dropping you a note to say that I really appreciate your videos, we also milk 140 with plans to go to about 160 ( subject to major investment in accommodation and slurry storage etc) actually putting in planning application this week for a 100,000 gal slatted tank and a fairly large shed. I assume that you are getting the green cert for your development project as well, my wife has just completed her green cert and found it great she was very surprised at how much she already knew and glad to have learnt stuff she didn’t know. She also felt that it was important going forward due to the amount of regulation coming down the road, because she thought that sooner or later she would be not allowed to do something ( like administer injections ) because she didn’t have it. I often pass by your place and it’s nice to see the people behind the operation. The N81 is a bloody nightmare with traffic by the time it gets as far as us but it can’t be a picnic moving stock over it at your place either, have you ever thought about putting in an underpass?

Would u not be better of having double the cows and not keep on to your calves they must not be much money out of the beef calves bro keep on to them when there mothers are jex do they even pay to keep on to them
@ONeillDairyFarm19 күн бұрын
Your stocking rate allowed for cows is different to that of calves. We wouldn’t be able to double our cows without doubling our grazing platform acres which obviously isn’t possible. . Also they graze the out farm that the milking cows can’t get to. We’ve always had no problem selling our beef calves. They give less output at sale but they need less input costs so all evens out. If it wasn’t making money we wouldn’t be doing it.

Will u keep the fleckvieh heifers calves for replacement for your own herd or beef

Poor Ginger. What’s the difference between Slurry and Silage?
@ONeillDairyFarm22 күн бұрын
One goes in the cow and one comes out 😂Silage is excess grass that’s cut in summer and kept under cover to ferment and eat when grass doesn’t grow over winter. Slurry is their poop that they made while indoors over the winter that drops down inbetween concrete floor slats into giant concrete storage tanks .

Sorry about Ginger .I've lost two, the same way, in as many years. Cat is concentrating on its prey and road traffic increases in volume and speed. "Nature is red in tooth and claw" as the poet said. On a lighter note - summer is here ; school is over and many hands make light work (fun and games included). God bless the good work.
