Excellent video. However, I strongly disagree with the closing "Key Takeaway" statement. Moreover I think the "Key Takeaway" statement is in complete discord with the lesson of the videos distinguishing TWRR and MWRR. The "Key Takeaway" states: "Depending on market conditions, if you happen to add or remove money to or from your portfolio (account) at just the "right" or "wrong" times, your money-weighted rate of return can significantly over- or understate YOUR performance for the year". NO... The MWRR IS YOUR RATE OF RETURN... PERIOD. The last section of this statement should be modified to read "...can significantly over- or understate the performance OF THE ASSETS IN YOUR PORTRFOLIO (OR ACCOUNT)". The lesson of these videos on TWRR and MWRR is that the MWRR is in fact YOUR PERSONAL RATE OF RETURN OR PERFORMANCE and that the TWRR is the performance of the assets in your portfolio or account. YOUR RATE OF RETURN OR PERFORMANCE is strongly affected by YOUR personal financial behavior which is reflected in YOUR cash flow and buy/sell history. Research by Vanguard and Morningstar typically shows that an investor's personal performance (which is all that is important to that investor) as measured by MWRR is lower than the TWRR of the underlying assets within the account or portfolio. The magnitude of the difference between MWRR and TWRR is also positively correlated with the volatility of the underlying assets. That is, as the volatility of the underlying assets increase, unfortunately the difference between MWRR and TWRR typically increases due to investors' poor financial behavior of selling when asserts are down and buying when they are high, much like Buster in these videos.

on their website, they show a comparison between the different investment levels of Global ETF portfolio's, I'm just not understanding the chart of percentages on the right for years 1, 3, 5, 10, Inception. This is supposed to be projected or historic yields or something? Is anyone seeing positive results with the balanced or Equity Growth plans?

Great risk video Shanon, thank you! How does inflation affect the decision to have a bond weighted portfolio? Are bonds more for deflation protection? What would the short and long term duration spread need to be to go with a more heavily weighted bond portfolio?

Excellent video. I’m 2 years from retirement and I own almost 100% dividend paying Bluechip stocks. If I opt out now and move to a conservative Etf I won’t have enough to retire! Yes I’m rolling the dice but I have to add when markets fall and increase my dividends. Small amount in GICs to carry me 4 years to postpone my cpp. I have to take more risk or I will definitely be short and have to continue to work until 70+

@llzaza2 - I tend to use VUN (as I find it it simpler than XUU, as it only holds VTI for its U.S. equity exposure). But it is more expensive, so that's the trade-off. You really can't go wrong with either option though :)

Hi Justin, thank you for another fantastic video. I now see that iShare's asset-allocation ETFs (XEQT, XGRO, XBAL, etc.) officially uses XEC for their Emerging Markets allocation. Does this mean XEQT is now more tax efficient than VEQT? Thank you.
@JustinBenderCPMАй бұрын
@GodOfSpades101 - From a foreign withholding tax perspective, yes. But since emerging markets make up such a small portfolio of XEQT, the difference between the two is negligible.

Amazing explanation, thank you! I have a question: if I divide my periods by months and add $1,000 three times in a single month on different days, can I simplify the calculation by totaling the $3,000, or would I need to break down the month by each date the $1,000 was added? Thank you!

Thank you for the amazing content Justin! Something I would like to clarify for foreign funds (incl US) in a non-registered account: You said the withholding tax might be recoverable (in what cases would it not be?), but aren't we fully taxed on the dividend as a foreign income, which would matter much more if the marginal tax rate is high enough, making it unfit for the taxable account? Or are you only focusing on the withholding taxes?
@JustinBenderCPM2 ай бұрын
@yusiftherange - One example is if your taxable income is low, you may not be able to fully recover the foreign withholding taxes. You would be taxable on the dividend income in a non-registered account, which is why tax-deferred and tax-free accounts can make sense for most investors (regardless of FWT implications). So you shouldn't just hold an ETF in your non-registered account to reduce your FWT, when you still have the available room in your TFSA.

Great video, Justin. I have believed in the efficient market hypothesis for almost 40 years. I would describe myself as an unrepentant indexer. Here is a question that has been on my mind for some time. I have read articles about an index bubble or tipping point and have come to the conclusion that there will always be a kind of equilibrium between active and passive investing. There will always be enough active investors to ensure price discovery. But what if there were no active investors left? Would it not be possible that the market would remain relatively efficient? I am reminded of Francis Galton's observation that the average of the guesses of the weight of an ox at a fair turned out to be within a few pounds of the actual weight. Or, think of guessing how many jellybeans in a jar. I think that most of the participants at the fair were not well-informed livestock experts. Maybe it's a silly question, but I just have this feeling that the trading even of unsophisticated investors would result in prices not far from the intrinsic value of the stocks.
@JustinBenderCPM2 ай бұрын
@daviddalton8545 - Theoretically, if there were no active investors left, I (and many others) would start analyzing individual companies to make some easy money. In reality, as long as there is greed in the world, there will be active managers looking to profit :)

@JustinBenderCPM2 ай бұрын
@w.g9012 - XEQT already includes U.S. and Canadian equities, so you'll have more of these assets classes if you also buy VFV (U.S. equities) and VDY (Canadian equities).

This was very useful. I have my money in a target date fund, but seeing the worst 20 years return made me nervous. Looking at the asset allocation of my target date fund, I feel like it is taking more risk than I am personally comfortable with. I will consider moving to a target date fund with date earlier than I actually plan to retire.

Why no mention at least of VEA? At least to explain the fact it has the difference of including about 10% Canadian equity - so you could use that if you accounted for the Can-con it adds to your portfolio.
@JustinBenderCPM3 ай бұрын
@inkheart124 - There were many U.S.-listed international equity ETFs that I didn't mention, as this channel is targeted at Canadian investors (and they already have plenty of Canadian equity exposure). As well, holding Canadian equities via a U.S.-listed ETF (like VEA) would be tax-inefficient for Canadian investors, as the Canadian dividends would not retain their tax characteristics (i.e., they would not be eligible for the Canadian dividend tax credit).

Thank you for the great video. I started off with the E-series funds from TD (which I still have but don't contribute to any longer) but switched to XGRO last year. For me it was a no brainer, same asset allocation but no need to constantly rebalance every year or, having to decide which of the 4 funds got my small contribution. With XGRO it's only 2 or 3 contributions during the year and leave it alone. Easiest and most profitable investing I have ever done.

Is there a video that talks about how much foreign currency exposure (US) is too much for a Canadian investor? If all the non-Canadian equitites are purchased in USD (lower MER, RRSP, assuming no FX fees), a Canadian investor might easily be over-exposed to a foreign currency...
@JustinBenderCPM3 ай бұрын
@adrianm398 - This video might be helpful when understanding your foreign currency exposure (Quick comment - it's the underlying currency of the market - not the currency the ETF trades in - that determines your FX exposure): kzbin.info/www/bejne/emnan6V6f7R5grs

It's 2024 and I just tried it and it worked. Followed @hbrar9886 instructions as well. Instead of doing a limit trade I would recommend doing a stop limit trade so that you can sell it within a range. I put my order in on a weekend and dlr.u went up so I had to wait until it went down which took until the end of Monday. So either do stop limit trade or don't put in an order on the weekend.

Hi Justin, I have a question. If you do this in a regular account meaning NOT TAX SHELTERED, are there any tax implications? doesn't seem like it since buying and selling price is about the same, correct?
@JustinBenderCPM3 ай бұрын
@bobesfanchi - Unfortunately, there would be some tax implications. You could need to convert the USD purchase or sale amount for DLR.U to CAD, using the FX rate on the settlement date (T+1 now).
