This was very useful. I have my money in a target date fund, but seeing the worst 20 years return made me nervous. Looking at the asset allocation of my target date fund, I feel like it is taking more risk than I am personally comfortable with. I will consider moving to a target date fund with date earlier than I actually plan to retire.

I have a 3 fund portfolio but I have finally decided to invest in ETFs, alongside. I’m looking at SCHD, VOO, XLK or SCHG.

Great picks! You can't downplay the power of VOO and SCHD, even combined they compliment each other nicely! ETF portfolio setups is the most worry free way of investing

Why no mention at least of VEA? At least to explain the fact it has the difference of including about 10% Canadian equity - so you could use that if you accounted for the Can-con it adds to your portfolio.

@JustinBenderCPM Күн бұрын
@inkheart124 - There were many U.S.-listed international equity ETFs that I didn't mention, as this channel is targeted at Canadian investors (and they already have plenty of Canadian equity exposure). As well, holding Canadian equities via a U.S.-listed ETF (like VEA) would be tax-inefficient for Canadian investors, as the Canadian dividends would not retain their tax characteristics (i.e., they would not be eligible for the Canadian dividend tax credit).

Thank you for the great video. I started off with the E-series funds from TD (which I still have but don't contribute to any longer) but switched to XGRO last year. For me it was a no brainer, same asset allocation but no need to constantly rebalance every year or, having to decide which of the 4 funds got my small contribution. With XGRO it's only 2 or 3 contributions during the year and leave it alone. Easiest and most profitable investing I have ever done.

Is there a video that talks about how much foreign currency exposure (US) is too much for a Canadian investor? If all the non-Canadian equitites are purchased in USD (lower MER, RRSP, assuming no FX fees), a Canadian investor might easily be over-exposed to a foreign currency...
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 13 күн бұрын
@adrianm398 - This video might be helpful when understanding your foreign currency exposure (Quick comment - it's the underlying currency of the market - not the currency the ETF trades in - that determines your FX exposure): kzbin.info/www/bejne/emnan6V6f7R5grs

Beware they have changed the UI quite a bit. You might end up buying and sell the same thing. Make sure you manually enter different symbol for sell instead of select "sell" button on your current holding.

It's 2024 and I just tried it and it worked. Followed @hbrar9886 instructions as well. Instead of doing a limit trade I would recommend doing a stop limit trade so that you can sell it within a range. I put my order in on a weekend and dlr.u went up so I had to wait until it went down which took until the end of Monday. So either do stop limit trade or don't put in an order on the weekend.

Hi Justin, I have a question. If you do this in a regular account meaning NOT TAX SHELTERED, are there any tax implications? doesn't seem like it since buying and selling price is about the same, correct?
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 13 күн бұрын
@bobesfanchi - Unfortunately, there would be some tax implications. You could need to convert the USD purchase or sale amount for DLR.U to CAD, using the FX rate on the settlement date (T+1 now).

Thank you for this! Great video, Justin. Quick question: it seems like VEE's holdings now indicate direct shares of the companies versus an investment in the US ETF. Did it also transition? Is it now thus more interesting given its lower MER?
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 2 ай бұрын
@anoutinabil - Unless the official financial statements of the fund now show the individual stock holdings, VEE still just holds VWO (the company websites can be a bit misleading).

Great video as usual! Justin: just to be clear, there would be no benefit (outside of MER) to hold VEA over VIU in a RRSP account? I believe since VEA was updated with a ~9% Canadian equity complement, that the tax drag difference is now negligible, but I still can’t decide if the MER alone is a better reason to hold VEA. Note: other RRSP holdings are VTI, VWO, ADUV, ADVD. Merci.
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 2 ай бұрын
@willbobig - If you already hold U.S.-listed ETFs in your RRSP, you could consider holding something like IEFA/IEMG to avoid Canadian equity in VEA...if this is what you're shooting for. This would lower your MER and could be worth it...as long as you avoid high FX costs by using Norbert's gambit to convert currencies.

Great video! I think another consideration is that breaking up the all-in-one could create opportunities for lower foreign withholding taxes, if you swap some of the holdings. For example, if holding VEQT in an RSSP, VUN can be changed to VTI, and VEE can be changed to VWO (since VEE doesn't hold the emerging market stocks directly).

A potentially significant shortcoming of this allocation is that much of the tax loss harvesting potential is lost by holding equities in the registered accounts. Comments?

@odourboy - I agree this is a shortcoming. Charitable giving potential with equities in non-registered accounts is also reduced.

This seems counter-intuitive to me.. I'd have expected the least tax efficeint bond holdings to belong in registered accounts. Has anyone tried to calculate the aftertax return of minimizing fixed income in non-registered accounts?

I am 40. I will have a pension, no kids, and own my home current value 800K I’ve never invested. I’m 15 years from retirement and want to “Die with Zero” What would be best? I’m slight above average in risk but if I I lose some investing. I don’t think it will impact my retirement or lifestyle. I was thinking of going more aggressive since I don’t have much worry about future money VGRO, VEQT

Amazing video, A friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got talking about investment and money. I started investing with $120k and in the first 2 months , my portfolio was reading $274,800. Crazy right!, I decided to reinvest my profit and gets more interesting. For over a year we have been working together making consistent profit just bought my second home 2 weeks ago and care for my family.
