This has been the best content on the change in accounting.. as it catches the trend.. I never understood why Accounting never promotes itself for investment banking, stock picking and recently private equity.. All these rely on accounting information and solid accounting knowledge.. The way accounting is being taught and promoting itself has to change.. and it is changing.. saying this as an accounting educator.. Thank you for this video.. It would be really nice to develop further on such topics as “contemporary issues in Accounting”..

I’m a 32 yr CPA and I’m glad PE firms are coming in to shake up the industry. Although I started my career going the traditional Big 4 route as an M&A associate, I’ve had the privilege of spending the last 3 years serving small businesses and entrepreneurs as an entrepreneur myself. Once you’re forced to put on the entrepreneurial hat, you see the world completely differently and it’s made it incredibly hard for me to work for other accountants that refuse to innovate or look at the world more strategically. I think it’s lazy, it shows a lack of leadership and the writing is on the wall. I see the industry becoming a Blockbuster 2.0 case study at large.
@accountinginfluencers5 күн бұрын
Couldn't agree more. If accountants could think more like entrepreneurs, then they would serve their clients much better.

I'd also strongly recommend to partner up with as many people as possible. If you're the stereotypical accountant, you're unlikely to seek out other people and embrace change, which is very understandable but indeed detrimental. However, I'm sure most people would like to know what else they can do to improve their firm or their own skills, but simply don't know where to look. You'd be surprised to see how creative other people can be and what other people have seen in the market; I've seen firms do a combination of outsourcing and automation whilst keeping a specific Sales team on board to keep an eye out for the clients and potential new business. What seems to help is to remain curious, because many other firms/people also don't know how to navigate this fast changing landscape and your guess is just as good as theirs.

You're so right. Stay curious and stay connected!

You're welcome. I guess I speak about accounting despite not being an accountant in the same way thay accountants speak about running a successful business despite not being entrepreneurs. It does transfer.

Inspiring, for a former journalist with a background in computing at Stanford, aiming to combine the two skills, and have exhausted every cheap Coursera university course in accounting, finance, software engineering, and more abstruse topics such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and trying to minimize cost this is a good manifesto, the firm I worked for in the US ages ago went from Computer Associates to NetSuite, your podcast on the Intuit Suites challenge to NetSuite was invaluable in my ongoing formulation of job market re-entry. Thanks.

Finally. Technology could have automated accounting almost fully years now. It was up to most governments around the world that didn't advocate for such a practice. Don't worry though clients still need a person explaining accounting and taxes to them. This will be the golden age for "accounting consultants"

I started to move into accounting coming from tech because of the shortage but it seems it might not be a real shortage. More like right-sizing for more efficiencies. I also don’t think I could suffer through the entry level stage at my age.

Sir, I believe you are severely misinformed in spite of whatever the "data" shows. The accounting shortage is a misconception and a scam. All of the big 4 have been laying people off. The reality is that there is NO SHORTAGE. And the culprit is NOT artificial intelligence (AI is for the hacks and hucksters). The true threat to accounting is OUTSOURCING!
@FriedNugget219 күн бұрын
I do believe the modern accountant can create value by not only offering financial and technological literacy, but also the key competitive traits an account can offer; being a trusted advisor, being an experts on the facts and being able to look forward based on past data. I've seen this before with the stock trading market where robots absolutely outperform humans, but I personally wouldn't know where to start when it comes to automated trading. In a similar way, the modern accountant still radiates trust and expertise and this is unlikely to change. After all, many parts of the responsibilities of the (external) accountant are required by law and it is unlikely this will get any less strict. I'm a huge advocate for technology, but from what I've seen in the field is that many firms, both accounting firms and client firms, are nowhere near as ready as the media makes it out to be. Plenty of client firms still struggle with automation and I cannot believe the amount of times I had to print something out, sign it and scan it in again because the client system's didn't allow for digital signing. The modern accountant can be the technological savior as well as the financial savior for firms such as these.

Its a challenge for accountants from private companies to grow professional. The are assigned roles and are limited to that function of that role. There is lack of leverage to expand their knowledge and be leaders.

For the last 20 years, we are not educating students for book keeping only. The role of accounting has been on decision making for quite sometime, and yes for sure that accounting is integrating technology as it always has been. I appreciate the video but it would be better if the guest was more on “how the practice of accounting would change other than book keeping”.. For instance, audit jobs are being affected but what else? What areas will be negatively affected? I think AI is going to make Accounting comprehension of a management more prominent.

Great stuff. Well said, and accurate! What are your thoughts about firms that have fairly strong opinions (policies) about their staff speaking out (corporate communications domain). In my experience, my firms have said "If you want to speak publicly, you'll need to get pre-approval from leadership". Large financials and other firms can get rather anxious when someone does this, and I've seen people get slapped on the wrist and outright denied when they tried to speak out. I know, mileage can vary; those in positions of authority have more autonomy and there's always the disclaimer "The opinions expressed here are my own" but in my opinion, discretion (and a little homework by way of corporate HR policy) is advised if one is seeking to start branding themselves and putting their own name out there against the firm's. I get it; some firms would be happy to have their name on a marque, but others want to manage the message and the messengers (grin). Thoughts?

Loved this! It's not about your titles but about who you are: that's the differentiation spot. You don't need to post every day about your profession but about your personal interests, because personal branding is just that: personal. They won't hire you for your title but for who you are!

I have a question I hope someone can give me some insight on. I am just over 50/M, I have been a Registered Nurse for over 20 years, mostly in the Emergency Department side. I am retired military so money is not a huge issue, but lets be honest, going from $50/hr to $20/hr is not going to work (I can get a very easy Nurse job for $25 or more). But I am looking for a career change. Have thought about IT, but it holds not interest for me. I am looking at a standard Business management, Business management accountant, or Human Resources degree. Is a Bachelors degree in Accountancy worth it? I actually would like to eventually work remotely, but I do understand any new career will start at less pay and more work, but I am looking at the 5 year or greater mark after I start. Any thoughts, positive or negitive, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Keyword, "talent." There's no shortage of people with accounting degrees, only a shortage of highly experienced pros willing to work for peanuts.

I am studying accounting and doing very well. But I also have to work full time. So no internship or networking. So I am interested but cant do this because it is all contacts. So one suggestion would be make how good and smart you are at accounting be at least a little bit relevant to whether you become an accountant.
