I realized an old video… But I would try defatting it. I would dehydrated in alcohol, put it in a 50-50 mixture of water to denatured alcohol. Then after two or three days, move that over to pure alcohol and then after two or three days of that, move over to acetone, then change the acetone a few days later allowed to sit for another few days, at that point you can let it dry and it should have almost no fat left in it.

When you said plastic I know it was going to break the first use. I'll rather use the metal blades lol 😅

I got to say wearing that holster would be even more dangerous than wiping your butt with a broken coke bottle.

I also would skip the Tan-Cote. I think you would prefer the leather surface to be open and breath more. That is the huge advantage to Veg tanned insoles.

I have seen 3/4 insoles with the arch cookie (half moon) piece on the bottom. That way the top surface is smooth to your foot. Great Video, thanks for sharing, I've been meaning to build some for a year and I think today is the day.

I had that. It shattered left and right. I got them at Amazon. I bought a new version from HD. The blade lasts longer.

Tandy leather and Weaver Leather both have tools, leather and other supplies. They both offer premium as well as economy lines of tools. Amazon has some very affordable tools... the less expensive stuff doesn't last as long or work as well as the higher priced stuff... but that is true no matter where you shop.

if you don't have any bailing wire, cut up a wire hanger into three pieces, loop an end so they fit into the attachment.

Leather worker here. I just made insoles for my boots from some really thick leather I have had for 20 years and I really like the feel in my boots. I used leather for the breathability and feel. I also know once they are used up they will biodegrade. I actually like the smooth feel of the non grain side on my feet, it makes the boots easer to get on and off. I also am not use to gel insoles so going to the leather was more pleasant to me.
@danceswithbadgers3 ай бұрын
I made some from 4mm veg tanned leather I purchased via Amazon. I used the heel cups from some old Superfeet Black inserts for the heel shape and arch support. A different feel to my gel insoles in my otherwise leather - lined hiking boots but I'm enjoying the more precise feel, and comfort seems better than the Superfeet Green I used for years. Ultimately, the cost works out about the same as "premium" orthotics so that's fine. I walk a lot.....a lot, so I want my hiking boots to be as bespoke and comfortable as I can make them. Leather insoles are a 'step up' (!) IME.

Great video. Do you think it would be possible to mount a Kydex holster I have already to a rigid sheet of leather like that for added comfort against the body or do you think it's not worth the effort? I'm trying to make this $20 holster as nice and comparable as possible to a $75+ holster with DIY mods and so far I'd say it's rivaling $50-$60 mark. This is all it needs, lol.
@GPWoodworks Жыл бұрын
You can absolutely do that. Might be tricky depending on the design of your existing holster. The leather backplate is comfortable. It will prevent the holster from slipping around when worn IWB. But, it gets a little sweaty. There are pros and cons to all designs.

As in another video the start switch gets full of sawdust?! and either stops working or burns out, I find it crazy that they don't make a sealed switch.

Um, my understanding is, since it is not a hardened blade but made of annealed steel, is to bevel the blade at a 45º angle with a mill file (as a file will not work on hardened steel - which is also a quick way of testing to see what kind of treatment you've got on a blade, plane iron, chisel, etc.), de-bur the back with light file pressure and then use a honing steel like you would for a card scraper and create a light bur towards the back (away from the bevel) of the blade. To use, insert the blade with the bevel facing in on the clamping side until it touches the bench then clamp it in. The scraper's shavings are adjusted with the screw adjuster on the other side which is the side that faces away from the cut when scraping. (Just like when using a card scraper, the convex bow is always facing in the direction of the cut - not away. (Using the belt sander is a great idea, but when using a magnet to flatten either the front or back, be sure to always use one like you did. [A welder's magnet I believe] which is strong enough. Otherwise it could suddenly become a very dangerous and sharp projectile in the shop. A shop vacuuming before using it for flattening any metal would be a really, really good idea. Even if you have fire insurance.) My number 80 is of a similar vintage but was in better shape when I got it so I feel no need to do a complete restoration on it. However, Your's looks very nice. Too bad it is a very poorly understood tool which is a shame, as there are things it does better than a card scraper, especially when it comes to larger surfaces; knots and/or wild grain, etc. I hope you've enjoyed it in the interim since you posted this.
