This is great. I was thinking I had read it wrong...but, no, your video helped me see, in a hilarious way...that I was indeed reading it correctly.

Thank you for this great reading. I was always so thick headed that I never could figure out if A) the wife wasn’t really dead until after the Panther attack ( was she just in a coma) or… B) did she come back from the dead to fight the Panther to protect her beloved?

The story is infinitely better than the performance! Anna, find the voice! This is not playful, macabre sarcasm about human frailty, this is a bitter prophecy. The voice should be more logical, more objective, more ... in a word ... "scientific." Here we find the incomparable Poe rightly transplanted into France, even as the likes of Maurice Ravel would soon worship him the same way Berlioz had worshipped his Shakespeare. Here we find a presentiment, transcendental, of what our own AI is likely to become: a shred of seemingly innocent, philosophical, dialectically programmed curiosity, pretending to be human -- even mimicking a soul -- turns this juridical "cyber" cat (the finch is the first victim) into a compulsive killer at par with but "beyond the [Nietzschean] good and evil" of the great white shark he rightly should have described more accurately from the start. Anna, you need a bigger voice. And a bigger ... boat!

This was my suggestion! I completely missed this when it came out. I'm so glad you liked the story. Jane Rice did a number of other horror/fantasy/weird tales, but, sadly, like a lot of female authors in the pulps at that time, her work has been largely forgotten. I've had a hard time tracking down her other stories, although I got a copy of "The Sixth Dog" at Necronomicon in 2017. She's a good writer.

I liked this reading a lot. I mostly listen to your ghost/horror readings, but this was a nice (albeit depressing) story. It'd be great if you did more of these. Don't worry about the accent. Even Mainers now wouldn't be able to do a Maine accent circa 1870.

I’m not sure I would call following your intuitive-gut/dream guidance as “flimsy”; but, I think it is a question of contentment & solitude versus potential heart-ache & love loss after a honeymoon period with a potential lover is the “higher” path . I think it important to remember, often a wayward lover could mean dying from syphilis, which ended in insanity; & while I realize that harsh, just the stigma of a prominent (well-to-do) Lady marrying an artist who might embarrass her was also socially a kind of a death, for one’s reputation stained by desertion or folly by a marriage partner could cause one to be held as a social pariah. I think it telling that the narrator here speaks to the audience as if they believe her premonition to be spot on, but out of curtesy, demurring to silence to spare her the embarrassment was a calculated foreshadowing of what would become known to the Lady in Lilac in the afterlife. Continuing down this line of thought, my personal interpretation as it is, I believe this to be a symphony of the lavender- that is, the muse (music) that caused this lovely Lady to have been “shelved”, & I think it quite intensional. As you say, many readers would have been familiar with the common practice of placing lavender between the sheets (of music? of love?) that have stayed unused. It’s a rather sweet tribute to women who followed their own inner guidance which lead them down a road less taken, though not necessarily less challenging, in a time when many wombans could not have autonomy without some social sigma; while men often remained unstigmatized at being a self proclaimed “Bachelor”. It is quite a step forward in progressiveness to suggest that the Lady in Lilac often thinks of this in wonderment but does NOT regret her choice, as obviously a womban of financial security in her own right, to suggest that a womban did NOT NEED to be played the fool over a folly of the heart & still be content (though possibly isolated) was against the grain of the day. So, with all that said, I found it rather a lovely story of a Lilac “Bachelorette”, & I think the writer is suggesting, ever so subtly, “why knot, if it instinctually feels wrong”. Thank you for the lovely reading. Get your throat a nice Hot Tottie- you deserve it! 🍯🍯🍯🍋🍋🥃

@annabellreads5 ай бұрын
It's very tricky, varies country by country, and I'm not a lawyer. If your portrayal of Cthulhu absolutely mirrors the one presented in the story, and only uses the phrases, etc, from the story, you should be good (in the US). If you divert from that, or add in things from a later portrayal (eg, the differences between Steamboat Willie and modern day gloves-and-red-shorts Mickey Mouse) you can land in hot water.

@@annabellreads Well I'm from Portugal, but if I use the name "Cthullu" and use the story of the book, I'm good? Bc I've seen other content creator make their interpretation of the Call of Cthullu...

Looooove this one! Women’s voices are often like the cry in a wilderness’ ice. We speak in the cold, and the icicle we held out is now the arm. And that arm drips down from the cave so many of us find ourselves in. When I first called out from my cave, the other women came to join me and made me a fire. We huddled together in our feelings and we kissed our sons and daughters inside each other and onto each other. The men were alone in the night and they smiled at us when they returned, unknowing of our new collective and the soothing in our bond. Those men stayed silent, respectful and somewhat afraid of our power, and though physically stronger than us, they knew we had been among the gods, and were their gods. Anna, youre a rainbow! 🌈

Thanks as always, Marcus. I try to foster a "live" feel, so a lot of the minor flubs I'd edit in a more polished audiobook just have to live on. For voice-only audiobooks I'll frequently re-record one or two words in isolation when I'm editing later... that video would be hilarious to watch. I do jumpcut if a loud truck goes by or my phone goes off, but just pause and then re-begin a whole section so it's not disjointed visually. Merry Christmas to you as well.
