@@explodedstarmonkey Are you referring to the term fossilized? Yes, it’s referred to both ways but in hindsight I think I’d leave it at just that
@explodedstarmonkey5 сағат бұрын
@BlueDotJewelry i was referring to the title opalized petrified wood. guess it would petrify and then opalize.... Im no rock licker so i guess i was mistaken, seemed to me that opalization is just a more specific form of petrification... Carry on
@BlueDotJewelry4 сағат бұрын
@@explodedstarmonkey You know enough for a not-rock licker. Petrification refers to the organic material being replaced by (any) minerals over time, so in this case the petrification WAS the opalization, and vice versa is true.

I was wondering what you used to make your molds with? So I was beyond delighted to see that you made a short video on it. I was also wondering what your thoughts are of the Fire Mountain Gems silver metal clay kit that keeps selling out? In my routine google searches on metal clay kits I have visited their website, Cool Tools and I think Rio Grande. I find it interesting that not every kit comes with a torch. Which has made me wonder if you only need one either a kiln or a torch but not both? Also I'm sorry that it's been difficult for you to find the material that you used to use to make your mold's with. But I hope what you are using now will be just as good.

I have a butane torch, but it seems like they recommend you not to make anything bigger than a 50p coin if you're not using a kiln, and it occurred to me that if I wanted to do something bigger (I got given 100g of copper clay, so I'm thinking big lol) maybe I could make thin ish plates of copper with it and then work the pure copper afterwards. What does anyone think about that? Bear in mind I'm no jeweller, just a hobbyist with *some* experience with silver clay and regular clay. Thanks!!
@BlueDotJewelry5 күн бұрын
That is true about a 50g limit for torch firing. The idea is that if you make something solid you want the heat to be able to penetrate all parts of the piece equally. So you could actually make something like a chain (theoretically) and fire each section separately, eventually firing it all but not all at once. So your idea to fire them in parts and use different ways makes sense, just be aware that they will need to be well fired to be workable afterward (ie bending, stamping, etc).

What do you use to make the mold from? Can you make a mold of anything? My mother died when I was 19 but I still have her drivers license. I've wondered if I could somehow make an outline of her signature and put it on a pendant or a bracelet or a ring? I really don't know. But it's been a thought.
@BlueDotJewelry5 күн бұрын
@@EmorettaRobinson Absolutely you could! You could write her signature with a raised ink pen (or similar technique) and then mix up the mold material and lay it over the writing. It will pick it up.

I’m just wondering why not take the silver clay fill the two house and then paste them together when they’re still in the silicone let it dry completely in the silicone and they’d be connected already. Just wondering out loud. That’s so delicate. Do you think a syringe with paste in it might help as well. I think you have to have small fingers.
@BlueDotJewelry13 күн бұрын
@@catherinemartina6469 This is a great question and I hope I can explain it clearly, but basically, when molding an item that’s a little complicated like this, it was most important that the edges came together cleanly and I wouldn’t really be able to see what I was doing or refine on the minute level that I would want to until it was too late. If it was a simple object like a sphere I might do it that way, but I needed every ridge in the back of the seahorse to align on the other side, for example, and it would be taking too big a risk that they would be misaligned.

Great video! Just occurred to me while watching, would cutting away some of the extra Silicone on the outside of the mold near the trail end make that end of the mold more flexible so the tail is easier to demold? What a cute seahorse! Your silver replica looks amazing 😍👍🏼
@BlueDotJewelry14 күн бұрын
@@jamaicanapple Good question, and perhaps, but thin areas in molds have their own issues, like they can stretch to accommodate more clay than they should while filling. That’s a fine place to experiment! But after doing so myself with this kind of silicone material, I prefer a mold of this thickness + slow, slightly awkward removal :)

I watched a video a while ago where someone used the abbreviation of EDS to mean Eating disorder syndrome. And that's understandable to me. However I was on a waiting list to see a genetic DR to see if I have EDS aka Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which I believe is what you are referring to in this video. I didn't know about that silver clay could be absorbed into the skin. I also didn't know how hard it would be to meet with a Dr to get tested for EDS. I still want to see what all I can make with silver metal clay though? This is one of the most intriguing things I've ever looked into. Thank you for putting together such a concise video.
@BlueDotJewelry23 күн бұрын
@@EmorettaRobinson Ehlers Danlos, yes! Good to know that acronym has multiple meanings. I wear gloves often now when I work. Tight fitting exam gloves don’t seem to affect most of the things I want to do. I even wash the gloves (wash my hands with them on) and then take them off to dry and reuse them because personally I struggle with the idea of using new pair gloves every time I work. I used to work for hours and hours my hands covered in clay without washing them - not a great idea anyway with any material. I now urge frequent hand washing.
@EmorettaRobinson22 күн бұрын
@@BlueDotJewelry I'm conflicted. I'm glad that what I know as EDS is what you were referring to. But I wish EDS wasn't a thing. Also I think that your practice of washing the gloves for possible re-use is a wise thing. And I commend you for that. I'm not conflicted about that though.
