Rolex and their ADs work much the same way as the fashion industry. They get sent an assortment of pieces. The AD can’t cherry-pick the models they want. That’s why you see the unusual sizes in clothing stores on sale, when they have to change collections and the previous ones hasn’t move. ADs get their money selling the hottest items back door and try to sell the ridiculously overpriced gold models in the boutique. That’s why you can often get solid gold models at a discount!
@WatchFanHenry2 күн бұрын
Thank you very much for taking the time to explain this. I very much appreciate it. A few times over the last five years the Rolex shops that I visited have said they have solid gold pieces in but nothing else. I’m not looking to purchase a solid gold piece and I guess most people are in the same boat as me. Actually, they also have the occasional ladies watch, which again is not something I’m looking for.

I have to say thankyou for introducing me to Mizutani from one of your video's last year. I made sure to go when i was in Tokyo August 2024 - i went to Nakano broadway and all the usual shops but it was Mizutani where i ended up buying a vintage gold Omega Speedmaster. The whole experience was exactly as you showed. So helpful, so knowledgable and a great product. We even talked about your visit and video as the way i found him. When i was leaving, there was an american family coming in to look also. I intend to go back to Tokyo in the coming years and I'm defintely going back to visit the store!

I am so very happy to hear this. Thank you so much. I was in his store last month during my visit and had a great chat with him and he is very grateful for the introductions that my video made to his store. He deserves it because he operates such a wonderful little shop, and his level of customer service is second to none. This is a store that I trust implicitly and I speak from experience as I purchased my first watch from him back in 2019 and it’s working beautifully to this day. I visit him every time I’m in Tokyo and if you’re looking for a vintage Rolex, that’s been properly maintained in good condition and you want to have peace of mind with the purchase, I can’t think of a better source.

What you have said is completely against my experience. Every single Rolex AD that I visited last month in Thailand and Japan had zero mens Rolex watches for sale. Here in Canada there are no men’s watches for sale at any Rolex AD. I will go back to Europe next month and I’m sure every single Rolex AD that I visit in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK will tell me they have zero watches for sale (except all gold models). @WatchFanHenry2 күн бұрын
I just did a quick search on eBay and the cheapest price I can find it for 2023 Explorer with a white dial is $12,000 USD. If it was me personally, and I’m in Japan, and I can buy the same watch for US$10,780 and see the watch in person, from a watch shop that I know has been in business at the same location for many years, I would of course buy the watch in Japan and enjoy the $1300 savings. My preference is always to buy a watch in person from unknown store than a faceless enterprise on eBay or Chrono24. And the fact that it’s $1300 cheaper makes it a no-brainer.

The Japanese people have great honor and sense of self-worth. It is not in their tradition to treat people poorly in any way. It is for this reason that I am comfortable buying Rolex watches from used shops in Tokyo and I’ve purchased several pieces over the last several years. This was when prices were very favorable for Rolex watches in Japan, but as this video demonstrates, the situation has now changed. And the Rolex prices in Japan have now largely increased to global trend levels so there are very few deals.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THEIR FAKE ROLEX????
@WatchFanHenry2 күн бұрын
Great question thank you for asking. The Japanese people as a culture are not interested in anything unless it’s the original item. This isn’t China or Thailand, where a thriving knock off market is alive and established. The Japanese people have no interest in such items. The Rolex shops shown in my video have been in business for many years at the same location run by the same people. They have a stellar reputation .. And I would not hesitate for a second to purchase a $10,000 watch from any of these stores. You cannot compare the luxury goods market in Tokyo with the backstreet markets of Delhi or Shanghai. Historically the Rolex watch has been a sign of accomplishment and achievement in career and life for hard-working Japanese people. No Japanese person would want to put a watch on their wrist with the word Rolex that was made in a sweat shop in China .. this is just not a concern. I hope this explanation gives you some insight as to why I have no concern in this regard.

This was my thought as well before I got to Tokyo. The yen has gone downhill against all currencies pretty much over the past year. So I was hoping that the prices might be beneficial for us Rolex watch fans. But as my video showed sadly this was not the case they’ve just increased the prices in yen to what I would consider to be essentially global trend levels. And the deals of 2023 and earlier just are not there anymore Not to mention the selection being a lot less than it was as well.

Why does EVERYONE overlook the Sea-Dweller. 43mm is NOT that big. Its basically a better Submariner.
@WatchFanHenry2 күн бұрын
Great comment thank you very much. I have a lot to say about this. I like the Sea Dweller and paid a lot of attention to them during my visit of December 2023 from a year ago. In that video, you will see a lot more Sea dDwellers available at much better USD equivalent prices compared to 2024. What I noticed is that the supply and selection of Sea Dweller watches is now far fewer than there was in visits past. So if somebody would’ve bought a sea dweller in 2023 in Tokyo, they’re ahead of the game for sure now. The reason why I purchased a vintage black bezel Submariner in my visit of 2023 was because of two reasons 1) it was a bit cheaper than the Sea Daeller and 2) I was concerned that the extra thickness and bulk of the Sea Dweller would be for some reason more distracting on the wrist than the slightly thinner Submariner. So those are my personal reasons for not buying the sea dweller back in 2023. It’s an interesting point you were raised. Thank you again.

@ I am not sure about second hand GS watches, but I expect more choices. For new, the prices of standard models will probably be about the same as outside of Japan, as you can normally get discount outside, but also get the same in Japan on the tax refund. A lot of people go for the Ginza limited edition or the Japan only limited editions. If you are in Tokyo until the 17th January, a new Ginza edition is being released (SBGA503), at their boutique stores, as well as in some department stores. Even if you don’t get something limited, it’s always nice to get something from a place that is made there as a souvenir. I have been collecting GS for several years, it’s good to see that is now more appreciated. I do have Rolex’s etc, but the quality on a price point of view, and the accuracy, is hard to beat.

They prob took great care of them, and prices seem reasonable, but I guess prices in general are up a lot like always Rolex doing supply and demand games with increasing prices and releasing less than what the demand are and there you have it rising or steady prices. Also please do not call anything Rolex, poor mans anything haha, if you have money for a Rolex you per definition are not poor, and that is also the image they wish to portray, plus it is a bad and toxic habit, sorry but had to call it out.
@WatchFanHenry7 күн бұрын
No worries at all thank you very much for the comment. I said that just for effect .. not taking myself too seriously there. You are right Rolex has played with inventory and demand has boosted dramatically, and the fact that they don’t sell watches to everyday people that walk into their stores anymore is bizarre. I have been visiting Rolex stores for five years and I’ve never been able to buy a watch there. I guess that will change at some point. In years past, Japan had huge supply of Rolex watches at prices that were less than North America and Europe and that’s what made it special as I show in my video from last year. But times have changed.

I also went to Nakano broadway last trip (October), and if that was the only area I visited for watch shopping I would have been VERY disappointed. The selection (of mostly Rolex) is quite good, but the prices are at the upper end of what you'd expect on the global market. I suspect videos like this are responsible, as I saw pretty much only tourists shopping the high end watch stores in Nakano...the prices are basically the going rate online from anywhere in the world, you just get to save VAT at the point of sale, which is 10% and a decent discount. However, ironically, I had MUCH more luck just hunting standalone shops in Ginza and Shibuya areas, the prices and selection were way way better than Nakano despite these being fairly posh districts, you just have to work harder to find good stores because they're not all in one building. I ended up buying an Explorer 2 at one of those stores that was arguably the best price:condition value I had seen anywhere in the world for that model with full box/papers set. Go on Google Maps and search for used watch stores and pawn shops, or go on Chrono24 and search for the models you're looking for, filter location to Japan-only, and look up the physical location of the stores selling the best deals. Every non-Nakano lead I followed up from Chrono24 ended up having markedly better in-person pricing than what they were showing on C24/Ebay. There are good shops in every major city, and there are definitely still lots of good deals in Japan, you just have to do more research and leg work on your own to find them.

“The Brits have come up for a nickname for the Rolex, the ‘Rolly.’ I don’t know of any other geographic region on the planet where the population has actually come up with a nickname for the brand. And that basically tells us that the brand is so well known in England, more so than in any other country…” Wow, I spit out my coffee laughing at this statement. Such confidence! “Rolly” or “Rollie” (the more common spelling) is an American hip hop slang term that has been rather widely known since the 1980’s. You almost certainly think it is a Brit term because you are more likely to watch UK crime dramas than to listen to rap music. That’s perfectly fine and natural, but that along with your third generation anecdote has led to some staggering confirmation bias here. The idea that Rolex theft in the UK has something to do with that country’s special relationship with the brand is, sorry, rather laughable. “Thugs” covet Rolex watches for the same reason they covet Lamborghinis and Air Jordan shoes. It’s not any kind of regional special knowledge or relationship with the brand but rather the opposite: they don’t know a thing about watches but any idiot knows that a Rollie (or a Lambo or a pair of J’s) is valuable and will convey status and/or fetch good money.
@WatchFanHenry7 күн бұрын
What you say is true .. it is my perception as a Canadian that the Rolex brand is far more ingrained in the British psyche then it is in the Canadian psyche. For example, the teams of thieves in the UK go hunting Rolexes (and other high value, consumer items as you well point out). You could wear a solid gold Rolex President into a McDonald’s wearing a T-shirt here in Canada and nobody knows that watch from a $50 Timex, this is my observation of 60 years living here. You may be right .. I get my information from UK TVs and movies from the as well as from KZbin where Rolex theft is an ongoing theme in the UK. I know nothing about hip-hop so if the. Rollie term originated from there, I wouldn’t have a clue. I’m just going from my observations and what I can tell you is that here in Canada we don’t have gangs of thugs roaming the streets targeting people in restaurants, focusing in on their Rolex watches (or any other items of high value that they carry on their person). .. this does seem to be a UK national phenomena, and it is just not the case here in Canada. So my observation that the Rolex brand is originally a UK brand going back to its founding over 100 years ago, might be a reason that Rolex watch theft is so prevalent in the UK. It’s all about my “perspective” .. Be right or wrong. It is my perspective.

As a quick summary, you use to be able to get competitive prices on luxury watches in Japan. Given the weak Yen in the past couple years. Those days are long gone and prices have adjusted. And I can confidently tell you that if you are looking to buy a luxury watch in Japan to return back to the west or other countries in Asia to resell and make a profit, chances are very low. If you are looking to buy for personal collection and looking to save 15-20%, there are some.

That is the magical thing about Nakano Broadway. There is still a large selection of Rolex watches but not as extensive as it was last year or in the past, and now the prices have increased. Yes I agree, in the US and Europe the selection is very thin compared to what I’m seeing in Japan.

If you are strictly looking at Rolex and perhaps Patek, you can forget about bargains. The worldwide market is more or less the same. But if you look further afield at watches like AP, VC, JLC and some of the German makes like Lange and GO, then yes, bargains can be found in the pre-owned market. If you are looking for heavy discounts on new watches, Omega prices there are about as good as you can get. So no, bargain Rolexes are hard to come buy, since they are buying the pre-owned ones for inventory with a 10% premium now with their buy-in adverts.
