It's probably the closest to how Old French was pronounced back then. The rolling of the R's, the pronunciation of all the letters, the phonology, etc... and very well accompanied by the harp. Congratulations to both artists.

It is so nice to be able to listen to more of Annelina’s voice and Tuomas’ guitar lately; they fit together really well, and not any less in these fun and light-hearted little pieces. You also remind me why I love Purcell so much: he’s just so humane and lovely, covering all possible human emotions, from the grandiose, elevated, and dramatic, to the simple, merry, and mundane. Annelina nails this sort of mischievous, but ultimately good-natured character, without detriment from her tremendous vocal quality. Tuomas, on the other hand, knows very well when he needs to step ahead and when it’s better to take a backseat; harmony doesn’t seem particularly complex in this tune, so you work with what you have: accent, dynamics, and rolls. All in all, a very catchy and festive song. Very nice! Annelina is the enchanting nymph and Tuomas the shepherd, showing the path to follow. <3 Also, your story about the unbreakable mirror-y glass is awesome! It certainly seems to be showing a different, dreamlike world when the camera shows your image through it. Very fitting! Cheers and hugs! I look forward to every one of your works. Eager to know what follows each time ^^.

Ah, Caccini, one of my all-time favorites! I adore the music from this specific time period - late Renaissance / early Baroque - and the way it had of speaking about elevated human emotions just for the sake of it. Be it joy, pain, desire, sadness, it all felt like a celebration of life in all of its nuances and hues, some sort of liberation after the constraints of the long time preceding it. This piece feels like a birth, like the first stumbling steps into a much larger world. And it is indeed very celebratory in its nature, because what could be more celebrated than passion and love? And once again, you give an outstanding live performance. Anneliina is truly surprising here; I’m very used to the more ethereal, almost otherworldly nuances of her voice - but she shows how she is able to shift shapes completely, becoming more carnal and human as is required by this work. And Tuomas’ guitar is bright and joyful like the singing waters of a stream or a small fountain. This really sent me to a calm place full of sunlight and gentle breeze. Thank you very much for the art you once and again share with us, with the sole purpose of bringing delight to us. You are very much loved and admired!

Thank you so much, dear Francesc. This location, the old tram garage we have used for making several videos, is special in a way that it invites one to express music very freely. It is such an odd place to perform early music and in the same time super inspiring. It sort of allows one to engage in "shape shifting" as you put it. Also to work with Tuomas is a joy, as he both adapts to the singer's spontaneous changes in a nano second and passes the ball back with his phrasing to catch. The tram garage presented its own spontaneus change to plans by suddenly throwing one of its windows out to the parking lot! Well, we of course carried it in, and gave it a possibility to have its say as well 😃

"Just for the sake of it" - well put, dear Francesc! In fact you brought home a point that needed to be made. Musicians are still caught in a romantic stance, which modernism and postmodernism have only served to strengthen: self-important posturing and the need to justify art and artistic choices with pseudo-philosophical metanarratives. It's quite enough just to do it, and truer to the spirit in which any true art was conceived. Thank you for commenting so thoughtfully! Edit: We can admit to resorting to posturing quite (or almost ;) as often as the rest - that's a part of why your comment was so welcome!

Gorgeous! I’m of course very familiar with Sanna already, but it’s not that often that we are blessed with the presence and voices of the other two singers - whose names I regrettably don’t know. I want to express my gratitude and praises to the three of you; your voices merge so well together, complimenting and accentuating each other in very flattering ways. You are probably very used to singing together, knowing each other very well, and it shows. Moreover, your understanding of this particular style of music is on point, and it goes straight to the heart of this humble spectator. The best of my best wishes to all of you! What you do is simply beautiful. Kiitos paljon!

What a marvelous piece of music by a great composer I did not know about! First thing I absolutely need to say is, after a while since the last time I listened to her: Maikki is utterly magnificent in this. Tremendous breath control, impressive “singing line” - I don’t know if that’s a thing in English? - and delightful dynamics. Stunning. Of course, it all would be meaningless were it not for her honesty and humaneness of both feeling and voice. Tuomas is elegant, stern, and grave, which we are already used to; the sound of his lute is like a clock signaling the time passing by, with its dark and earthy twang adding the much needed richness and weight to the harmony. Simply wonderful, in the unpretending and authentic way I know and love! The video itself also deserves a special mention, as well as the snippets of knowledge you drop on the description box. It makes sense that Maikki is the river that goes to die to the sea. In any case, it’s comforting to know that no Maikkis were damaged in the making of this video 😛! A warm hug from Spain 🥰.
@TurkuEarlyMusic3 ай бұрын
Thank you - once again, your guiding insight cuts right to the heart of the matter! The theorbo player himself also thinks that maybe a little less gravity and weight might suffice, and theorbo’s characteristic darkness could benefit from some whimsy and playfulness ;) something to aim for in the future. And your description of Maikki’s singing is wonderful!
@Francesc19833 ай бұрын
@@TurkuEarlyMusic It is of course a matter of personal taste. I love the dark and weighty aspect of certain string instruments, especially in the deeper end of their tessitura; they feel like an ancient tree sinking their roots into the earth, a very powerful and primal sensation which, in my opinion, suits this piece and its tone very well. At any rate, I think this music is very well written, and the composer certainly knew how certain specific notes would sound and the feelings they would evoke. As for Tuomas, he has already proven how the theorbo can also sound fun, joyful, and even silly sometimes. I wholeheartedly trust his musical taste, and I very much look forward to listening to any new experiment he is willing to indulge in 😃.

Hola Francesc! Yep, no damage done, quite contrary; this was probably the most pleasent shoot ever. I mean actually, what would be better than plunge into a warm sea swell?! 🥰 And thank You again from your overwhelming words. But you know, about the theorbo here, it is actually like the sea current, isn’t it? So, singing on the bass line in this song is like floating on a current - everything is so easy and comfortable, if you just keep following the current 🥰🎶 This really is so well written; a masterpiece, and one of my all time favourites. A warm hug from the shores of the Baltic sea to Spain!
@Francesc19833 ай бұрын
@@maikkisaikka4099 I completely agree with you. It is sometimes hard to find the right words without ranting and ending up writing a whole essay, but I especially love your analogy with the sea, since it’s a very powerful figure to me, personally. I have come to feel that voice and instrument influence each other, actually transforming their own sound to incorporate aspects of the other. A voice without a context might sound beautiful by its own merits, but it may be sometimes akin to a question without an answer. I have the impression that the theorbo here is grounding and supportive of your voice, in a way; not only as a takeoff runway of sorts, from where you can open your wings and fly, but also shining a light over you, under which you effectively change your appearance, revealing a different perspective which would not have been seen without said light. And the same applies the other way. Also, the contrast between both timbres all but accentuate their individual beauty, making them more understandable in the context of this music. I don’t know if anything I just wrote made any sense - it does to me 🤣. Best wishes to the both of you!

Yet another splendid addition to your Stingology! It’s dumbfounding how you always manage to add your personal spin to such well-known works, making them your own, very different to the original versions and not in the least ‘lesser’ or ‘worse’ - as subjective as those words might be. This rendition of Fields of Gold sounds very serene and melancholic, with a somewhat mysterious undertone which was not present in the original. This is why I appreciate your covers so much: you always have interesting ideas to contribute with, adding nuance and perspective to already great compositions. Also, you outdo yourselves time and time again on the visual aspect, too. This video in particular looks so cinematic, evocative, and soothing, with a nostalgic aura that makes me feel like crying - and that’s just another point, you never fail to hit that raw, emotional spot. And I apologise in advance, but I just need to say you both look beautiful and radiant in this. You are just so pure and endearing as always <3. Thank you again for this precious gift - a little sneak-peek into your minds and souls. Big hugs!
@TurkuEarlyMusic4 ай бұрын
Exactly! The song is so well known, perhaps too well - that is what made us steer clear of this until now... But in the end it really is a great song, and we felt we could make a version that communicates other aspects of it than Sting's original, in a worthwhile way. Thank you for commenting, your words help to dissuade any lingering doubt. And the visuals somehow came together serendipitously: we've been having an unusual, dare I say almost Spanish late summer, with lots of sunshine and warm weather - which can be seen in these images, we hope.
@Francesc19834 ай бұрын
@@TurkuEarlyMusic It doesn’t surprise me at all that you decided to keep your distance from this piece, since comparisons are unavoidable and often quite harsh. It also shows your respect towards the original and a deep understanding of the challenges of trying to cover it. Rest assured, you succeeded at creating a version which is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also musically relevant and non-redundant. The visuals are stunning as they always are, no matter the weather or the subject; beauty is in the eye of the beholder - or their camera and editing skills. Also, in regards to the “Spanish late summer” weather, bear in mind that it’s not the same everywhere in Spain. Here in San Sebastián (Northern Spain) it’s been raining a lot and the sky seems perpetually hidden by a cloak of clouds. I love it ^^; I’m more of a chilly, cloudy, foggy, rainy weather guy myself, but I truly appreciate golden afternoons nonetheless. From time to time XD. Thank you for everything. It’s always such a joy to watch, listen to, and read you. Seuraavaan kertaan asti!
