Finally! The wait has been long, but so worth it! Loreena McKennitt has been so important to me, her music a part of my life soundtrack. I especially listened to her a lot during the mid and late 2000s, and The Mask and Mirror is probably one of my favourite albums by her. What surprised and fascinated me the most about her work was precisely the mix of influences you describe: despite being rooted in the Celtic culture and tradition, Loreena is such a musical globe-trotter, drawing inspiration from many different places and contexts, and she is able to paint a coherent picture using all these different colours which one would have thought would most likely clash. And you have managed to capture the feeling of her music so well, taking it to a place of intimacy and tenderness. I am deeply captivated by the ethereal, mysterious qualities of Anneliina’s flute, paired with her regal presence and almost magical voice, whereas Tuomas’ deep, focused, weighty theorbo serves as a perfectly grounded contrast, an earthy counterpoint which is moving in its own right. Thank you very much for this. It is so lovely to see you again, going at it with a full display of your great taste and musicianship. Hugs!
