I realize that I’m a little late to comment on the video, but I’d suggest using a .018-.020” patch with 70 grains of 3F powder. Both my wife’s and daughter’s muzzleloaders are fast twist barrels and shoot patched roundball quite accurately. Those .010 patches are just too thin, they’ll load great but won’t deliver as good of accuracy.

I've done TP as well. It's easier to break up but much less dense so I can fit less into my mill. In the end it evens out for me.

@@SuperSneakySteve I was originally reducing my entire BP production run by about 30% because I physically could not cram enough of the fluffy TP charcoal in the mill. Then I heard all of the balls clanking after about only 20 minutes. I looked and the TP was all the way down to what Skylighter sells as 36 mesh. After that I started milling the charcoal by itself - and it only takes 20 minutes for the volume to be reduced by like 95%+ So now I mill all of my charcoal same day it comes out of the Retort. Well....Dutch oven. I can fit four rolls of TP on end without compressing it, and then put Amazon box cardboard in all of the empty space, then finally add a half cup of dried peas. Then I let it mill for over two full days and I get basically Goex. I go for functional cheap and fast as opposed to Best.

Thats what my Uberti 1851 navy did when I replaced all inner parts with new parts last month. I changed all parts because I had all new parts, but mostly because the spring on the hand/paw broke. Then when I put caps on and tried to push them down on nipples with hammer, I tried to rotate cylinder and it locked up, had to take gun apart. I couldn't figure out the problem so I put all original parts back in with just the new hand/paw, it worked better but still locked couple times so I filed the hand/paw tip down slightly and now it works good. I looked at all the new parts but darned if I could see any significant differences. So my conclusion is, revolver internals must only work in 1,000" of inch differences..........

Just FYI, if you ever need a custom reamer or guides, Manson will make them for you. I wanted to open up my Colt 1878 in 44-40 to 0.428 chamber mouths. According to the owner of Buffalo Bore, Colt purposely cut all the chamber mouths small in black powder cartridge revolvers to delay bullet exit to get a more complete burn and higher pressure. Not good if you use smokeless. Smallest chamber mouth guide was 0.425 and I needed it. Amazing accuracy out of this gun with slow soft bullets.

Lube under the ball needs something like a card stock or felt disk over the powder. If shot immediately using lube under the ball without a disk to protect the powder works but quite a few fps are lost due to the powder that is smeared not burning properly. If the lube warms up it soaks into the powder and a huge amount of power is lost, and a squib is possible. Lube over the ball works great but you don't need much as the excess gets blown out after the first shot anyway. I use a syringe with the lube thinned a bit with olive oil (olive oil works great and doesn't go bad like other vegetable oils will given enough time. I just squirt out enough lube to cover the edge of the ball where it touches the cylinder wall - I've done it that way for the past 15 years or so and it works well, the best part is that there is still enough lube to protect from rust - I have tested it by going several months without cleaning my 1851 - no pitting, no rust - the secret is to keep some lube or rem oil over everything, inside and out. Keeping these cap and ball revolvers rust free liberal use of lube and oil is more important than regular cleaning. Remember that the Old West was pretty dry, and in some areas of the open range water was in very short supply, and the cowboys did fine. The good part of running lube under the ball is that some of the lube vaporizes and keeps the cylinder quite clean. But you do lose a lot of power if there is nothing physically separating the lube from the powder. I'd tell you just how much power is lost per my chronometer, but the truth is it varies from almost no loss to total squib. It will shoot ok if shot immediately and the cylinder is cold. Prelubed felt disks work fine, but if you make these yourself you need to melt thick lube into the felt as the pressure of the ball can squeeze lube from the felt disk onto the powder and cause problems. The commercial felt pads don't do this but they cost too much. To make them yourself use a 5/16" punch for .44 cal felt disks, I don't remember the size for .36 or .32 cal. It is easiest to lube the felt before the disks are punched. Edited to fix a sentence - I had said lube under powder when i meant lube under the ball.
@SuperSneakySteve2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your process. I always use a vegetable fiber card between the powder and lube when lubing under the ball. Easier still is to just use dip lubed conicals.

I shoot this same bullet with a 30:1 lead tin ratio sized .459 in my 45-70 and 65 grains of Swiss 2F rolling block I built back in 1995. Excellent accuracy. I sized them to .452 and used a Harvester HP Sabot in my TC 209-50 magnum muzzleloader over 84 grains by weight of 2F Triple 7. All bullets weighed without lube and one hole at 50 yards and 1.3” average at 100 yards. Velocities ran 1635 on a five shot string. These are a historically “close” replica of the Trapdoor carbine loads of 55 grains of some type of black powder. I think the comparrison of performance is no different. Put the same grain (measured weight) into each load and you will get the same power. Pucked is just denser because it's squished = less volume. If one was manufacturing it for transporing, pucked is safer and can ship more per volume saving shipping cost maybe i dunno. From what i understand, puck it too much you get fouling. Looser is better.

A couple pieces of bar stock and a couple bolts that are 1.) threaded in one bar and 2.) in pilot holes/drilled divots on the other bar or could be captured by peening the ends but seems unnecessary. Glue leather on bottom of bar resting on frame and a filed round bottomed slot placed on the bottom of the arbor. As you tighten the two bolts EVENLY it will lift the arbor. Be careful as the forces can become too great quickly. Take exacting measurements.
