I know this post is old, but any idea how the rv “box” constructed, aluminum, steel or wood framing? Thanks

My 79 chevy RV is built with wood and aluminum I believe. They built them so much stronger in the old days

My Big Tex 10 X 6 weights a little over 900 lbs. empty and has a 3,500lb axled with a GVWR ratting on 2.999 lbs. I pull it behind a 4,000 lb. 99 Cherokee. It tows very well, but I wanted to make it stop better, so I had electric brakes, and a breakaway battery installed. With an adjustable brake controller in the Jeep, I can precisely adjust the brakes for the load from empty to full. It definitely makes the combined 7,000 lb. weight of Jeep and trailer stop quicker and without any fear of being pushed sideways by the trailer in a panic stop on wet ground. It was probably around $400.00 to $500.00 professionally installed. Parts alone were around half the total price for a do it yourself. Added safety and peace of mind are both priceless.

That motorhome should have electronic ignition, Chrysler started using that in 1972 so no points. After hearing about getting only around 5mpg I was gonna blame that thermoquad but now it seems like it's an ignition issue, (too?). That explosion in the exhaust system that blew out the muffler is from unburned fuel. I bet you'll get it figured out pretty soon and your mpg will come up to around 7 or 8. That still doesn't sound like much but the average class c motorhome gets 7 or 8 mpg and thats the newer ones with efi.

Wow! Its so good to see those old Scouts. That scout had an automatic (torqueflite 727) so transplanting a 440 into it is fairly easy, I did 3 of those transplants back in the 90s. All the 440 sending units work with the scout gauges, make your motor mount brackets out of 3" angle iron. I would buy those old New Yorkers for a couple hundred dollars, complete cars because the scout trans bellhousing bolt pattern wasn't matched to the 440 and you needed the scout's short tailshaft housing to accommodate the transfer case. Otherwise no cutting (except getting the exhaust welded up) or welding and the 440 is 75 lbs lighter and can get slightly better mpg if freshened up, heads milled .030 and maybe a cam change that increases low and mid range torque. Also, those scouts have a removable roof and once it's off, you have a true hardtop, no window frames exposed like the early Broncos. Yes, I miss those scouts!

That 78 should be the last year the 440 was available. I've read that the 440s used in motorhomes had special larger cooling capacity heads and I suspect it may have the forged steel crank, not the cast crank used in other applications. The harmonic balancer on forged steel crank engines is only about an inch thick and the cast crank harmonic balancer is about 2-1/2 inches thick, so easy to identify. Also, 1978 was the last year of no catalytic converters on trucks with high enough gvwr. For example the "Lil Red Express" truck came with the 360 V-8 which included the 340 performance cam and factory duel exhaust. That truck was faster than the 454 El Camino, got better mpg and cost less. I remember how the Chevy lovers complained "that's not fair, they put in a high performance cam!" The El camino had the required catalytic converter for that year and gvwr so its exhaust system was really restricted. I read the comparison tests in one of the popular car magazines. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos on this motorhome. Thanks
