I think we’ve all been spoiled by modern vehicles, my first rig was a 1957 for pickup with a 429 big block and I’ll admit for a 16 year old kid with a heavy foot it was a bit much, with no power steering these old rigs could be a workout to drive, thanks for posting 👍😁💪🏻

Yes! Worth the restoration! That truck / camper = freedom. Gas and go. Maybe a Jerry can or two for extra gas security. I live behind enemy lines in California. Trust me on this.

That 396 is not the original engine. It was debuted in 1965, primarily in Malibu SS96. Made it to trucks in 66, for 3/4 ton models. Biggest v8 for trucks in 61 was the 283

Original motor was probably a 348. 396 didn't debut until 1964-65. Nice motor home guy's.

Intrested in if you are going to put dual line brake system on. You need a dual master cyl. and praportioning valve.

It's got a factory power set up with dual lines... however, I'm going to upgrade it with a modern dual reservoir. I've had a lot of vintage cars, and was a tech editor for car mags for 20 years... single reservoirs are not safe.

That 396 was added in later on it's life was it not? I thought 396 did not come out until 1965? maybe you said it and I missed it I'm sorry if that's the case. As for the black license plate Yes they used to be very sought after and were big deal cuz it means it was a California car its whole life, but now you can buy them for new cars so the specialty and unique kind of wore off.

they never put a 396 in a '61, so it's not original.

Very nice. Probably came with a 283. Hydraulic clutch still? The first number of the Vin would be the year. Torsion bars suspension?

Yeah, it's a '61, with torsion bars. It's got the heavy duty radiator, so it probably was a V8, not an I-6. I'm sure it came with a small block, because it has shop-made motor mounts in it, while they'd have reused the 348 mounts on the 396

cool camper! I love it . I do not understand why you are talking about replacing the original grill with one of a differant year and why you are changing the wheels and apparently also the original mirrors though, but it is your truck so do what you will. just seems sad that it went so long with all the original parts and first thing you want to do it strip it.
