I've put chains on a couple of thousand times commercial trucks and pickups. I can't help watching these videos, the comments are addictive. If your chains have v-bar or studs they have to be as tight as possible and no amount of bungee cords will help. The more power you apply, the more the cross links will rollover. Seen lots of commercial truck cross links worn thin on the back, or spun out on a hill because of loosechains. As you go faster the the chain slack will move to one spot. Grate stuff. If you don't want to keep your fenders, you'll be able to put bigger tires on next year😂. After 15 mph, 20, bungees won't keep them tight either. Drive a mile, then tighten them some more. 40+ mph on ice, and with the window down, you can't hear any chain wip if there on right. Chains on the front only 😂, only if you plan on backing up all the hills.

I am glad that you posted this today because I was JUST revisiting this "Bear Country Chest Rig" idea today. I had pulled up several 5.11 website pages to browse their chest type rig, AND also looking at type of chest pack's they used in the movie Maze Runner. I appreciate your insight into the placement of "mid-chest" to avoid getting in the way of a regular backpack spaces. There's lots to think about. Also, I too use 147 grain Hardcast 9mm, because I believe it penetrates more than 10mm, due to it's smaller diameter.
@406MountainBoys Жыл бұрын
I agree, that 147gr HC is no slouch! Deeper penetration just because of the smaller frontal diameter, that I'm a little sceptical of because it's running about half the ft-lbs of energy of the 10mm HC loads. That's where the .357 Mag fits into that goldilocks zone of smaller frontal diameter with the velocity edge. I had a "better" woods gun all the time before I got the Glock 20, it's just heavier, harder to shoot well with these kinds of loads and only has a five shot cylinder.

Nice rig, and thanks again for turning me on to the High-Speed Gear chest panel. Top draw kit, that is. Also, welcome to the 10mm family (cult), been a fan since my first one in the late 80s. I'll link this vid to my chest rig build vid so folks can see this one as well as your first--which I thought was well done, too. I run my rig a bit different and have also evolved it as I get more and more time with it in the timber. I'll do an update some time in the future. Glad to see you took heed of the dangers of moose encounters--especially in winter--which I mentioned in my build vid. Montana has many ways to bite, claw, chomp, or stomp you to death--be ready for all. Cheers.

There's more more moose out there than bears but how many people (besides us) would watch a video titled Moose Chest Rig? I finally justified the 10mm to myself because I was doing so many solo hunts this year (which is probably riskier than being in bear country anyway).

@dominion5150 Жыл бұрын
Mike, good choice with the 10mm, however, I would change out the holster for it. Personally, I don’t like the Sherpa holsters because when you draw the firearm, it places your finger right in or near the trigger, as you mentioned… From my experience, this HAS caused several AD’s /ND’s for people when they draw their pistol in a stressful situation. If you want to have a retention system for your pistol, there are other options from BlackHawk that don’t place your finger so close to the trigger… Just my personal opinion based on my experiences.
@406MountainBoys Жыл бұрын
I might try their other duty holsters with a thumb release. Not as many options for the fullsize frames, and they only seem to come in black which means it would be time to bust out the coating tools. I get what you're saying about finger placement but NDs/ADs happen regardless of the holster if the shooter has their finger on the trigger or in the trigger guard when they shouldn't. It's a training and proficiency issue. We've had this same conversation before.

When you're putting on your rubber tighteners, start at the bottom. It's a lot easier to stand up and then pull it upward to hook them rather than pulling them down. You have the advantage of using your leg strength and it's a much more natural position to pull up/lift so to speak. I cut those extra links of chain off when I'm fitting my chains to the vehicle. When fitting them or learning how to put them on for the first time, it's best done in summer or spring, before you actually need your chains. Then you have a bit of experience/confidence and it goes smoothly when you need them. Knowing the draping method is good because if you get unexpectedly stuck that's the only way you're going to get them on and get out since you can't drive onto them. Great video mate. No nonsense, straight to the point. The new style chains are a lot easier to put on, tension and take off. If you're using chains often, it's worth picking up a set. The diamond pattern gives you a little more sideways grip too. Got a quick question for you, over summer I picked up a Hilux Surf (you guys call them 4Runners). The user manual says to only put chains on the rear wheels. I test fitted a set of chains on the front and the upper control arm clearance is a bit tight but it's not hitting and I can't see anything else that's in danger of getting caught up in the chains. Is there another reason I'm missing that I shouldn't put them on the front? Just asking since you're a Toyota guy too.
@406MountainBoys Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I agree that they might be easier but this set of chains has been going for 20+ years without breaking. Not sure the diamond style you're referring to are as robust and will last as long, the ones I've seen so far don't look as tough. When I need my chains I don't want to wonder if they'll fail and leave me in a predicament.

" Tighter is better" I've seen comments that state that when using chains on mud bottom slush conditions & mud in general in summer off roading conditions, looser is better as they tend to be more " self cleaning ". Snow / icy conditions; tighter Mud/ bush debris; looser Thoughts ?
@406MountainBoys2 жыл бұрын
My opinion is that chains should always be as tight as possible, if you throw one there's potential for damage and opens the door to all kinds of unpleasantness. The tread of your tire probably has more to do with how well the mud will clear out. if there's enough clay in the mud and the road turns to gumbo it's a balancing act of enough speed to clear the tread but staying in control.

@@406MountainBoys I'll echo it. I think 9mm is a bit sketchy for bear, moose, elk, etc. Only data I have to back that up isn't even data I have access to for reviewing, but that a surgeon looked at all the human shooting data he could get, and found .380Auto to be the smallest cartridge that would deliver on humans before results dropped off hard. .380 isn't much smaller than 9mm. LE trade in .40S&W pistols are cheap, including Glock and S&W M&P ones. Might be a much better choice, and a lot more likely to get through thicker muscle and bone of the bigger animals. Turns out even FMJ might be better for the purpose than HP/JHP bullets, as better penetration needed than on humans. Idk about your rounds specifically, but 147gr is the (generally) largest and slowest of the 9mm bullets. Without going hotter at least, 124gr is the most optimal velocity vs weight to deliver maximum foot/pound force to target. If going +P or needing less penetration (humans), can see going ~135gr like some companies make for their 'self defense' ammo.
@406MountainBoys2 ай бұрын
@cavscout888 the heavy for caliber bullet with hard cast construction is EXACTLY what you want for a woods round, even in 9mm. I don't want to make this into a personal attack but everything you wrote I think applies fine to your self defense carry round but falls flat when it comes to the outdoors. Go to Buffalo Bore's website and read what they have to say, they explain it better than I can here in a quick reply.
