I'm going to use some flexible dryer duct and put it around an extended exhaust (I already have both) and run a small DC fan at the bottom of the heater where the exhaust starts and split it off before it goes outside. I should be able to nearly double my heat output from 1 heater depending on the CFM of the fan. Easy and cheap way to increase efficiency.

I think you need to have an idea of how much power the heater consumes in order to work out how big a panel you need. But yep like i said it can work, also down time how long the heater will be running, also impacts on the solar panel. A little calculating will set you right, as i said to you before i kept a car jump starter and used to charge stuff from it, so it can work but you do need to have an idea how much power you use.

Andy, you might want one or two of the 100 watt panels connected to your solar controller. 100 watt panel at 12 volts is about 8 amp output. 2 would give you 16 amps to run the heater & charge the battery. For your winters you might even need 3 or 4 of 100 watt panels to be completely off grid just for the one heater.

You wouldn’t have the charger outside it’s only the solar panel you have outside so you would have to calculate cable length and power of your set up. Personally I have a bank of solar panels in series and a bank in parallel which lead into one charger/controller. This set up gives me a higher voltage to help with the longer cable length and a bank of panels which are in parallel which gives a higher amperage which in turn gives a higher charging rate and can cope with days that aren’t good for solar activity.

@@user-xk5nl4sb2z thank you for the reply . i was planning to have the panels on an inside window and wired to the near by large storage type battery i have that powers the heater , the panel i have charging my diesel van battery works very well so far . i have had the same set up in my work shop for over a year now and through trial and error have discovered the best way for this to function . my main concern at the moment is expelling the exhaust gasses high enough from any windows it may blow near to...i live in a line of cottages ..the project continues...

Error 3 is a dead battery ,not enough to pull 9 or 10 amps at start up.... ..Always fuse the hot wire near the battery as there totally unprotected..I'd say your battery has failed especially seeing how it was charging so fast..

If you could fit a coil to the exhaust inside and out at the top with the bottle 3/4 filled with sand it would be far better. This is because the sand has a far higher specific heat capacity. Great idea!

Just one thought at present, I would without a doubt put a cover over the screws that take the power from the wall to the power supply for safety reasons, those fixing screws look open and easily touched which as you know would give a serious jolt of 240 volts.

Hi Andy,your air intake for the burner would be better from the cooler garage air, the colder the air the more dense so it contains more oxygen to help the burn, same principle as an intercooler on an engine.
@leeyo5494
@leeyo5494 2 ай бұрын
yeah but the same air mixture for complete combustion is maintained with a turbo intercooler , it adds the extra fuel to compensate for the dense air, its just a way to get more of both, in to the cylinders,so your logic is kinda wrong, it will have no real gain for him,

This can be simplified considerably. Run the exhaust pipe completely through the bottom of the radiator from right to left. Seal the radiator after filling with water. There will be no need for a pump or tank, and will cause little to no restriction to the exhaust. The heat will heat the water and circulate happily inside the radiator on its own, as it does in the oil filled electric radiators.

Not better, but safer - you need to cover that 240v stuff, no bueno. 12v section is fine. I'd stick half a project box over the PSU, with a grip/grommet for the 240v cable. ATM that's dangerous as.

How about making a heat exchanger with the flexible exhaust pipe, and put a box fan behind the exhaust pipe heat exchanger. Bend the exhaust pipe in a zig zag ,from top to bottom, pipe in exhaust from the top and them out the bottom ,like the radiator you had and put a box fan behind to blow the heat into the room .

hi , after doing much experimenting with my heater in the work shop , i to would very much like to install one in the fire place in my cottage , the winters here are very cold and heating very expensive . have you had any issues with the exhaust going straight up instead of down wards ? i had condensation build up in my exhaust whilst running it upwards , almost blocking it :/ made some very odd gurgling noises , when it faced upwards , did you experience this ?

I was told I would get condensation just after I set it up so to be sure I removed exhaust 3 times over winter just to be safe pipe was clear apart from being black there was nothing. Hope this puts you're mind at rest.
