Hello Fella, I just checked your channel out, I'll sub you in a minute. I'm a massive fan of Japanese razors especially one's made with Swedish steel, some of my best razors are Japanese and I've got a Parker 1001 that is just a marvellous razor and every time I get it out it's a joy to hold let alone use. I'm after a Gold Rex or a Parker 501. Thanks for stopping by..

Nice relaxing video. Can I ask where you got the faux tortoise from as I was looking for some 3mm sheets a while back and couldn't find the type you have. Also I thought I'd mention that you are cross contaminating your paddle strops by not cleaning the blade in between each one. the .25 will have both the .5 and 1 embedded in it now.

@@TWalsh2 Hello, I got it from a craft shop in the UK called greenvil crafts, it's like hens teeth it seems. Yeah I have thought about that but for what I use them for which is mainly just off the stones I think it doesn't really matter to much & it seems to continue to do what I want it to do without any noticeable change. I wash and sand them down every couple of months as well. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment.

Hey Sean, I'd say the Jnat was more comfortable and a tad closer, it was pretty close though so it bodes well for future tries with the Coti, I'll do another razor with it next week, I brought a seven day set with only 4 razors so I'll do one of each on those, maybe the Water of Ayr also. 3/4 hours later no irritation and the next day with was still tight and even. I find the next day is also a good judge for me if it's a good edge my stubble feels pretty sharp, had to explain but it's a good gauge for me.

If you find one at a decent price I'd definitely give it a go as I really like mine and I've done over ten razors on it now so I know it's quite consistent. I sold a razor to a chap in Canada and he asked for the WOA edge and was very happy with it and blow he's other razors away a bit. @@Sustainashave What’s the difference in terms of feel between a Coti & a JNAT
@Sustainashave2 күн бұрын
Not a lot but I'd say the Coti was just a little bit less comfortable than the Jnat. It took a little more stropping and wasn't quite popping hairs as the Jnat edge, wasn't quite as close on my problem areas. Edge looked good under the scope.. I must say the Jnat edge razor was ever so slightly a better edge as that razor has been honed by me 3 times I believe and every time it's got a tad better.
@nonamebear11363 күн бұрын
I struggle with the coticules I have, I just can not seem to get them in an acceptable state. I can get them close but not close enough. But I guess once you get it you got it. I used to be in the trades as well, and where I live, there is a lot of rain fall. So I know how miserable it can be with the wet winters and how it slows everything down. But I would rather have the rain, than hot sunny days. There is a freshness that you don't get when there is no rain. Thanks for sharing and hope you are well and take care. Cheers!

In you're experience, does a compounded paddle strop help after you've been maintaining an edge on a hanging strop? Is there no point in using anything flat after a hanging strop?
@Sustainashave6 күн бұрын
@@codyholland5138 I believe so, if I have a razor that's not passing the HHT or just not shaving bob on the first thing I do to it is put the razor through my paddle strops and then my hanging strops. They are a nice addition and since I've made them I've noticed my edges are generally a bit better and easier to maintain. To go the cheap route you can just contact adhesive pieces of leather to MDF or got the nicer route with some oak as I have with mine.. I only ever use the pasted strops after coming off the stones or when one needs a bit of a touch up. Till then I just use clean hanging strops to maintain my edges. Hope this helps.. 👍
@codyholland51385 күн бұрын
@@Sustainashave thanks for replying. I just wondered how much the bare hanging strops were convexing the edge. I kinda get mixed results with flat strops after maintaining on a hanging strop for a while. Thx
@Sustainashave5 күн бұрын
@@codyholland5138 it's a good question fella, hanging strops definitely convex the edge but unless your using a quite strong abrasive on the strop it will take quite a while to fully convex it. I brought a 1950's travelling barbers wet a while back and he had all sorts of sharpening equipment, I believe he when from a cocticule to Harman paste of a flat price of wood, to the leather side then on to he's hanging linen side that was loaded to the rafters with red paste and then onto the leather side. All the straights in he's set up were convexed edges. He also had a little paddle strop also with thick leather.. I many use the paddle strops straight from the stones and I did notice a more consistent edge due to using the paddles. I get what you mean about the paddles might not be hitting the very apex of the bevel though and it's a good point and makes sense. 👍
@codyholland51384 күн бұрын
@@Sustainashave yeah, that's exactly what I was asking. I didn't think bare leather would do it very fast, but figured it would eventually. @Sustainashave4 күн бұрын
@@codyholland5138 no not at all would be very slow, I've got a few Swedish razors over the years that have been fully convex like looking at my Bark River knife edge convex, when I first got one in I couldn't believe how convex it was. I'm all about the metal some of my older razors and especially my new to me Geo Wostenholm that I did the micro peening on to fix the scales has just got the very best razor steel & just shaves like a dream. What those old boys knew about steel is just remarkable especially when it was from the days knowing it through their senses, touch feel noise and even smell. I do believe the Geo razors definitely used a lot of Swedish ore as nearly everyone I've honed is just different from the run of the mill Sheffield razors and some Sheffield makers grouped up and brought Swedish ore in bulk over 5 tonnes a year in some cases, couple of the other s that stand out on my stones are the Joseph Eliot's and Rodgers razors. I sometimes do the same, one pass with a well honed straight is normally always good enough, just habit with me on the ATG 2nd pass, plus I like to indulge in the second pass just for indulgence sake I feel..

It's a great soap and performs well, my only complaint if it is one is that I don't like how its in a little metal pot and its a bit hard not to get it coming over the sides. Have you put the puck in something? I might get myself a nice new shaving bowl for Christmas as it's the one thing I've not really got..

@@Sustainashave I completely agree, I usually save my other shaving pucks for example my used a&e I use for other soaps that have metal containers like taconic.

Nice Razor, I have an only 6/8+ Thomas Turner. Such a wonderful shaver, beautiful razors.

Hello, I've had a few come through me but this was the first one that spoke to me and said "keep me" All honed great and shaved top notch though. I do another video when I've re-scaled it..

I had long scratches on near mint razors , impossible to remove without losing what remains of the original finish ....its so annoying. Im not as happy with jap steels as they vary from ok to hard as hell 😅. I can hear thats a perfect edge , cutting so crisply , cant beat a straight razor 🎉. Wiping a blade on a small foam kitchen cleaner is my answer to avoiding the sink . 😮.

Its myNo.1 pain in the butt. I put some of my keepers in the polishing draw and going to see what I can do with them. I don't mind hard but I thinks it's because I'm so used to it. The hardest to hone razors in terms of steel have been some Sheffield's and mainly Geo Wostenholm which is likely why they are about my fav brand. Its super sharp and pretty comfortable but I think it could be better, I'll see what I can do with it after polishing as it will need a touch up at least. That's a good idea, another reason for my wife to moan at me though... lol
