The 49G was the last calculator ever built with HP's own Saturn microprocessor, which is quite the esoteric 4-bit vector processor from the '80s. After this, NEC shut down the fab producing the chips, and HP moved to ARM for the 49G+ and 50G, internally running the old OS in an emulator.

Excellent machine. The trouble with the HP19B (II) calcs is that by including a complete suite of mathematical & trigonometric functions, the full SOLVE capability (including Let & Get), and even conversions, it created a massive 'overlap' of features, that rendered the HP27S pointless, as it could do everything the HP27S could do, plus so much more. The only advantage the 27S had over the 19B, was it's form factor.

The original HP-41CX is getting harder to find and they are typically pretty expensive. Even if you have one, many modules are almost impossible to find these days and even if you do, they are also expensive. The PX41CX (like the DM41X) allows you to virtually load a combination of any of the available ROM modules. It's not the same as the original of course, but the PX41CX layout works with my 41C muscle memory and is probably a better option for a daily driver or to take to the office than a rare, fragile, original classic HP-41CX.

@CalculatorClique8 ай бұрын
Thank you 😊. Python typically runs faster than PPL and CHIP-8 I've ported to other platforms also draws the Pac-Man screen quite slowly so I wonder if this is deliberate and there is a delay in the code. I had to check for and slow the virtual Prime down a lot otherwise it was unplayable.

Thank you, I'm glad you like the channel 😊. I hear you regarding the Prime, I'd pickup my 41C, 48GX or 50g for general calculations before the Prime typically. I'm not exactly sure why either although the RPN is not the same as traditional HP RPN so that doesn't help. The hardware is very powerful but the keyboard print is hard to read (for me) even on the G2. I am enjoying porting Python applications to it though. Waiting for an update to fix a lot of the Python issues.

Are the crashing issues resolved on the new update?
@CalculatorClique8 ай бұрын
I'm running version 2.1.14603 on my physical Prime G2 which includes Python support. The current version is 2.14730 which lists fixes for 4 different crashing issues. I didn't update my physical Prime as there were no fixes for what I typically use and some users reported issues updating (although it seems to be mostly related to version C hardware, the G2 is version D hardware). I have updated my virtual Prime (and Connectivity Kit) and it does crash regularly but this may be a virtual only issue. @@CalculatorClique I'm using Emu48 set to a 50g on Windows, thanks
@CalculatorClique8 ай бұрын
Ok, I've just had a look at a couple of emulators and as HP GCC compiles to ARM code it won't work on emu48 (as it doesn't emulate the ARM processor, only the Saturn processor). You will need to use the emulator x49gp to run HP GCC programs. I was not able to find binaries for x49gp so you will have to build it yourself and it only supports Linux and MacOS so you would have to setup a Linux virtual environment under Windows.

The black LCDs are on later model calculators made in Indonesia and the keyboards on these are considered inferior to the calculators made in Singapore. Unfortunately these keyboards don't have the legendary HP feel and they tend to make snapping sounds when pressing the keys. Look at the [1/x] key to spot the difference.
@laughingvampire75559 ай бұрын
I prefer the blue on green display, it looks better on my opinion, the black looks boring.
@CalculatorClique9 ай бұрын
That's great if the contrast is good enough for you. The blue on green display is easier to find and cheaper than the black display. Also, the black display doesn't have double-shot injection molded keys (although some of the blue display versions got the painted keys before they went to the black display).

I don't have a flashable 12C and so don't have the firmware for it either (as I haven't needed it). There are also a number of different versions available so you would have to make sure you had the right version. Have you looked at the 12C development kit? It includes a firmware file and might be the correct version but check the documentation first to see if it matches your hardware (CPU etc). Please let me know if you find a solution. www.hpcalc.org/details/9554

Damn. I kind of which I had seen this before I replaced my dead 48sx with another 48sx. The screen contrast on that last one is so much better. How do the keys on those later 48s compare to the sx?
@CalculatorClique10 ай бұрын
The keys feel the same to me (discounting age/usage). One thing to note about the later high contrast (black) display models is that they had printed keys instead of the double-shot injection molded keyboards of the earlier models. It is possible to transplant a black display from a cheaper donor (eg 39g) to all 48 models but as the 48 series was not designed to be taken apart/repaired this is a significant and high risk task.

Forth was where I first learned RPN--I learned it without really having a machine to run it on, in theory because I was thinking about using it on Atari computers. Later I used some Forth on an Atari ST to develop a program that was supposed to be for a tiny Forth-based computer we were building in an electronics class.
@CalculatorClique10 ай бұрын
I find Forth easier to remember and pickup again after a break compared to, say, RPL. Forth also runs on pretty much anything.
