I love this video! I like to think of teaching as being a guide - not always just giving instructions, but walking along with someone, showing them a way. And being a good teacher is being a good student - so you are so right about how we deal with questions we don't know how to answer - it's an opportunity to figure it out and maybe even involving a student in that discovery process - particularly if it's a creative thing we are studying. Great, encouraging information here! Thank you for charing your insights!

Teaching art or just how to draw and create for fun has been my retirement plan and I don’t think it will change unless something happens to me that drastically changed my life and physical capabilities. It’s very nice to have everything outlined like the way you showed us, despite me putting the plan together in my head and never really wrote it down. I do feel that every teaching session is like a presentation. If you can put everything together in slide decks, then you’ll have the “flow” because it’s already curated. Q&A session in particular is so important because that’s when the teacher and the students are truly interacting with each other, and when teachers can be students and students can be teachers. I still have a long while before I actually retire from my day job, and in the meantime I’ll keep practicing on my art and filling up sketchbooks. I really like the chit-chat session you have in the end of the video, that feels very natural and organic, like I am listening to a friend. Nice video Chi-Chan, and I thought the lighting was great before and great after too, but I am not a videographer so I know little about that :D I did see a bunch of stuff in your background, hopefully your studio is coming together nicely and we’ll get to have a tour around your art studio soon. Take care and see you on your next video.

I enjoyed your video and I was so in tune with Ken and his view on art and art creation. People are like books, you know? There are different genres and storylines and sequels and… it’s good to read! Get to know people. Discover new stories. I like Ken’s low-pressure, follow the flow sort of attitude. And the “art is for all” spirit. I think this was a great first interview (was it your first??) in part because you two have a history to reflect on, so it added a richness to the discussion. Always enjoy watching your videos, Chika. Thank you always for sharing!

I completely agree with you; it’s so fun to open a book and listen to artists’ stories! It keeps me inspired. wow Ken's art is AMAZING!! I totally relate to him about botanicals, i love finding the differences between similar flowers and stuff, and it's also easy for me as i am so in love with nature 🍄‍🟫💕 having that texture legend is so handy!! instead of having to reference several of your art pieces, it's all easily laid out 😊i feel really inspired by his negative space use too, just incredible!!! and that feeling of flow state is one of my favourite, i find it very hard to break out of this once in it😂 I didnt do art for most of my life, lots of reasons but a big one was that I couldn't handle any sort of extra criticism in my life, and i didnt have people celebrating me the way i try to as an adult now. does that make sense? trying to simplify a complicated feeling. But once i gave myself permission, and even enjoy, whatever art i was making, it changed my life! and that started a few years ago, then 3 years of unusable arms, now i started again 6 months ago😊 and i dont think i would've gotten here if it wasn't for my arms going bad! silver lining, or just seeing the positive in everything 🤗 Now i encourage everyone that shows interest, and some actually did start making art!! i feel similar now on youtube, but i can reach potentially even more people😮 it boils down to giving them permission yes! im a new fan of ken 💘 thank you for sharing this with us. i made sure to follow on IG even tho i dont really use that platform 💞 much love!

I totally understand what you mean. I also went through a time when I wasn’t prepared to show my creations in public because I could hear so many voices, not only externally but internally too. Our internal voice can be really strong sometimes, right? But look at you now!🥹 You’ve been sharing your sketchbook on your platform, and that’s such a big step! I hope you continue to create more and more because your sketchbook really inspired me while I was watching. Your artistic sense is so precious. Keep going, we’re in this together💪

“All my artwork is second hand, they were mine first” I couldn’t agree more, and it’s the quote that I’ll take from this entire session. Back in middle school I told my friends that, art is not just on drawings, it is everywhere. Life itself is an art, all of us are artists ourselves because we all live a very unique life, and creating memorable moments along as we go, we just don’t really capture it like how we would on a piece of paper or any media. I would say this interview is a great success! :) I am glad to know Ken-San through here, and I am now following him on IG. I too do not see myself doing this ‘professionally’ but more like an escape from my day-job where I can explore my tiny little domain without rules or set boundaries. Really good Chi-chan! Really good interview session!

Back in middle school, I was part of the tennis club and didn’t think about art at all! This interview was a challenge to step away from using a script. But reading your feedback makes me so happy, and I’m willing to try it again. Thank you for supporting me as always, I really appreciate I see you every week🥹 I hope you're having a great week! @@ogawachikako Your friend is awesome :) And I am sure we're all glad that you didn't just keep him for yourself. I think frogs are cute too, and because of Ken-San, I probably will add a few more frog sketches on my sketchbook before I conclude it for the year. You are right, I am not sure why I was thinking about art that deeply when I was in my teens. I was also part of many clubs, and also the president of a language club. But still, nothing took me away from deep thoughts about art. I think the interview was a great success, and you absolutely should do more. It had a great nice balance and a very cozy vibe, makes people feel safe :) Next week we'll be on the road and be away from home on a vacation, don't worry I won't forget to watch your video. lots of yellow! feedback on an interview 👀 you seem so happy! it would have been cool to see the two extra names on the map but the arrow was good enough the little drawing that goes along with what Ken is talking about is great! being daring enough to actually do it 🤯 both of you seem really relaxed ✨ it would have been cool to see the 3D art held horizontally for a second to see the layers but idk if they would have been visible idk how many of these you had planned but 0 to 12 per year would probably feel fun to watch 🙏 seeing the two heads be in the same place while one half of the screen changes between the things you're talking about seems fine although I have to say this video feels much much longer than normal and idk if that's because of 3 sources of input rather than 2 or just the kind of day I'm having but it just feels longer - maybe the slight lag on the video call? the 3 day rule sounds like a good thing to remember this video was definitely different - idk how I feel about it but I guess I have the seed of an idea haha

How fun! I didn't know much about some of the styles you brought up - very interesting! I think this looks like a great practice - I love style-bending! I don't know that I have too many extremely identifying features - so short-hand gets to be a bit more difficult, but it's still fun to try. I've done myself in some comics - oh, going wayyyyy back in high school, even. This is very nice Chi-chan! :) I have said earlier that I typically don't draw myself. Even if I do, I don't really know which style I would draw. But I do know that I was influenced by Takahashi Rumiko's work, as well as Tsukasa Hojo. It is so much fun looking at all the styles you laid out, and I have to say, Chibi style is my favorite by far, but I tend to not draw that a whole lot and focus too heavily on details. I feel that somehow when I am being asked to draw a character, I will automatically draw Hero style for whatever reason. So I don't really know what style I usually draw, do you think it is okay not to have a particular drawing style? Maybe someday I'll find my own style. Anyway, I am very glad that you finally got some furniture and you seem to have settled in pretty nicely too. See you again next week!

Hey Alex! Yes, I finally got my new tripod and furniture! It's such a game-changer☺️ I see you’ve been spending more time on portraits recently, which is super cool! People like to categorize things to understand them, but I don't think artists need to fit into a category. Your style is your style. I use references from chibi, shonen, or whatever, but I don’t want to put my own artwork into a category because it feels like I’m limiting myself🎨 So yeah, let's keep going on our journey with more and more paper and pen! ^^ By the way, since you mentioned starting photography again, I'm planning to invite my photographer friend over to give me some insights into that world. @@ogawachikako ooooooh tripod sounds very serious now :) for some strange reason I actually enjoy putting furniture together…like IKEA furniture. Maybe because it feels like I was playing with Lego again. I agree that we shouldn’t be too honed in on the definition of our styles. Our style is what makes us happy when we create the piece :) I’ll just draw what I like, and let people decide what that is, because truly, it doesn’t really matter. Yes photography. I’ve been looking at some mirrorless DSLR for beginners and made some shopping list. I used to think that I want to have as much zoom as possible. But now, I like how I observe things around me, especially the sky, not just a single frame of cloud formation, but the whole sky. So chances are I’ll get some ultra-wide angle lenses just for that. Plus those are really good for vlogging and video making too because you wouldn’t need to place your camera too far away or invest in remote microphones. I don’t have all these equipment yet but I know what I’d like to have, so I’ll wait for a good time to get them….like around Black Friday or Cyber Monday :) And yes please do ask your photographer friend a lot of questions. I definitely wouldn’t mind more knowledge in the field. Have a great Sunday Chi-Chan!

Boy, oh boy, can I relate to the content of this video! Particularly the push and pull of "having a style" that is recognizable and profitable vs "exploring everything" and perhaps confusing an audience. I landed on the same sort of goal as you - people will just need to get used to the many facets of art I might dive into - and that is very much individual. I enjoy seeing artists do new things, even if they aren't particularly successful attempts (myself included!) because I find that to be a very real consequence of being creative and doing something for the first time - we won't nail it at first, most likely. I was talking to someone this week about art and doing uncomfortable things and comparing it to improv comedy - it's exciting because you DON'T know whats going to happen - even the person creating the art - and that can be highly uncomfortable.... but what a great way to test yourself. And doing so with friends who are supportive, it can be so fulfilling. Oh and Picasso! He certainly explored a wide gamut of art styles (as well as invented art styles!) and I think that's one of the reasons he is considered so great - you picked a very good example! Thanks for the thoughtful video - and I really do hope you continue to let your inner explorer go out for adventures! Not necessarily every day, but often enough that she can bring back some great stories from time to time.

Haha, I really relate to what you mentioned about improvising artwork instead of planning ahead. Yes, I think we should be playful in the creative process to grow, rather than just focusing on making profitable content. You know, if we wanted to get more views on our videos, we could use catchy negative phrases instead of positive ones for an example, since humans are more sensitive to negativity than positivity. But I love how your content is so fun and genuinely celebrates art itself. It might take more time, but still my direction is to gather people who enjoy art and spread positivity. My next goal is to gradually reduce my reliance on scripts, but I still rely on them quite a bit, haha. it's looong project, isnt it? 😅

So I only drew with what’s already available to me when I was a student in high school, or in the office at work… namely, pencils, pens, highlighters, sometimes, watercolors. You’re right about doing the same thing over and over again, it gets repetitive, and not a lot of room to expand. So just a couple of years ago, I bought a gouache set, and last year I got some brush pens, some water color, and last month, I bought a set of acrylic paints by mistake :D Actually I wouldn’t call it a mistake, just more ways for me to create art. Your video is letting people know that it’s okay to explore, and experiment with different things, and at the same time showcasing what other ways you can create art, like 3D drawings, animation, photography etc. It really helps to open up the perspective, and I am grateful for that. Interestingly, I ‘forgot’ how much I love photography, and just don’t do much of that anymore, and this morning for some reason I saw a video my wife made, and there was a short moment of me holding a camera peeking at the viewfinder, and said to myself “I miss that” so…. I think I know what my next big purchase will be, my own camera! :D Thank you again Chi-Chan!

Oh, that's so sweet🥹 Thank you so much for making my day! I see people who do photography looking so happy, spending their time in various places like parks, public spaces, and even capturing little moments at home. I also didn’t buy a lot of art materials because I had a minimalist mindset😅 I didn’t want to have too many things since I’m not great at organizing. Also, I knew I wouldn’t be able to bring everything with me to the next place. So, I stuck to my iPad for a while. Now I have a table and chair (finally!), so I need art materials to make my playground again! I hope you are having good weekend, Alex☺️!

What a nice video! I think there are a lot of artists who probably don't value their creations as much as they could, so it's a really good reminder for us! I liked seeing your older artwork along side the new re-creations... how cool! In time, you can do another re-creation... and another! That'd be a fun thing to try... every few years re-making one particular piece of art in our current style and way of thinking. Lots to digest here - great things to think about! All the best on settling in to the new place!

Thank you so much, Brian! I’m glad you found the video inspiring. Re-making artwork with a current style or different materials is definitely a fun and interesting exploration✨ By the way, I’m in the process of setting up my studio right now, but once it's ready and settled, would you be interested in working on something together? It’s just an idea at this point 🌱 Since you also post once a week, I thought it could be a great opportunity for us to create something fun together. Let me know what you think☺️

11th new place???? omg wait that's me haha I hope you love your new place! Did you end up bringing more of your art with you than you normally do when you move? How do you plan on continuing to make stuff for yourself, rather than the camera? some people have cat fur on their pants but I guess you have paint lol

Haha, you made me laugh! it's true! I might not have cat fur, but I do have paint on me, and sometimes even on my glasses🤓I managed to bring all my artworks this time, and I’m so happy about that! So far, I’m really enjoying the new environment; it’s calm, and people don’t seem to be in a rush at all✨ If I could get a table and chairs, I think life would be even more wonderful. I am waiting for deliveries this week🙏 It’s funny not to have the option to sit down right now, haha😅
